I’ve decided to change my article from 10 Golden Coins to Budgeted Resources so I don’t have to worry about the comments if I slightly over shoot the budget that I gave myself before. I will still be bringing you articles around the $10 mark but they could go over or under.
I’m going to be looking at two Pauper builds this week, as I said in my previous article the last time I played Pauper was when Time Spiral block was in Std. This was back when the format wasn’t sanctioned so all the events were run by players, some were sponsored by bots and some by the players / organizers themselves. I did take part in quite a few events and even managed to win a Std event.
The player events are still running at present if you want to see what’s going on please visit www.pdcmagic.com all the events are free to enter.
So here’s the deck that I managed to win the Std event with many moons ago, this is the only thing I have ever won on MTGO it must have been my lucky day.
Current price on MTGOTraders as of 03/09/09 $3.94 with sideboard, minus basic lands
Now we have an official pauper queue in the client I’ll be using that which means my deck will now be open to all cards as the official format is Classic. Let’s have a look at what can be improved bearing in mind I have no idea what decks are currently roaming round out there.
First things first let’s check out the Tempest slivers they weren’t online back then.
Creatures – Tempest Slivers
| Clot Sliver |
$0.08 |
It's off colour and I don't think it's ability is worth trying to include into the deck |
| Heart Sliver |
$0.15 |
This little sliver gives haste so could be very useful if we can lay down a few slivers a turn |
| Metallic Sliver |
$0.12 |
This sliver may look very plain but it's only one mana |
| Muscle Sliver |
$1.00 |
This guy is the H in Hive, I must find a way to include him |
| Winged Sliver |
$0.12 |
Its off colour but could be useful to give my creatures flying |
| Talon Sliver |
$0.10 |
I'm not sure if its worth trying this one out or not. |
|
 |
A point to note if you fancy playing slivers outside of Pauper I'd suggest you pick up 4 Crystalline Sliver's as well currently running at $1 each.
I'm also going to look at non slivers as well as this is a zoo deck not just plain slivers.
Creatures
| Nettle Sentinel |
$0.15 |
You could include this with Squirrel Nest for an infinite creature count |
| Qasali Pridemage |
$0.15 |
An excellent all round card that provides Exalted and can be sacrificed as a Disenchant |
| River Boa |
$0.90 |
This snake is so strong due to its regeneration ability and Island Walk |
| Taunting Elf |
$0.05 |
This could be a game winner when paired with slivers |
| Traproot Kami |
$0.02 |
I had problems before with flyers maybe this is the answer |
| Wild Nacatl |
$0.15 |
I’m already in the colours is it worth running Nacatl? |

Spells
The only changes I'm going to make here are to remove the 4 Incinerate's and replace with 4 Lightning Bolt's. I'm going to stay with the Ghostfire to take out any protection from red creatures.
The other card I'm going to mention here that could be worth running to get off to a fast start is Lotus Petal and or Simian Spirit Guide, these will take the deck out of most small budgets with the Muscle Sliver's as well.
Deck
Current price on MTGOTraders as of 06/09/09 $10.05
Deck Goal
I added 4 Lightning Bolts, 4 Muscle Slivers and 2 Qasali Pridemage. I removed 4 Incinerate, 2 Watcher Slivers, 2 Avian Changelings and a Gemhide and Two-Headed Sliver. The goal of the deck is to hit fast and hard the aggro way. I've removed the sideboard as I'll only be playing in the casual room.

Game 1 vs sweep
I have a real bad start and have to mull down to 3 in this game to find land, I start with a mountain, forest and a Lightning Bolt.
Sweep kick's off with a Lonely Sandbar, I was lucky on my first draw and get handed a Virulent Sliver.
Grixis Grimblade enters on sweep's side which I Lightning Bolt, I draw another mountain and attack with my Virulent Sliver getting in a poison counter.
Sweep passes and I draw a plains and send in the sliver again. Turn 4 sweep plays a tapped Barren Moor. I draw a Terramorphic Expanse and send in my sliver again, sweep is now on 3 poison counters.
This turn sweep plays Rendclaw Trow, I hope I draw something good as persist could be a problem. I draw Two-Headed Sliver that was lucky and up goes the poison count to 4.
There's no play by sweep this turn, I draw another Two-Headed Sliver and play it and send in my other two, sweep plays Agony Warptaking out the Two-Headed Sliver and Virulent Sliver deals no damage so no poison counter this turn.
Gravedigger comes into play on sweep’s side returning the Grixis Grimblade to his hand, two creatures is going to be hard to get rid of I hope I draw some removal . I draw a forest but don’t play it and pass.
In sweep’s turn he sends in the Trow and the Gravedigger and Ninjutsu’s the Gravedigger for Okiba-Gang Shinobi making me discard my forest. I draw and play Muscle Sliver and send in my other two for 4 damage and 2 poison counters raising the total to 6.
The Muscle Sliver is taken out by Consume Spirit in sweeps turn. I draw and play Lightning Bolt taking out Okiba-Gang Shinobi and attacking raising the poison total to 8, 2 more and it’s game over.
I never get an attack in again after this as I’m out powered by creatures and card advantage and it didn’t help that I was only drawing lands.
I didn’t do that bad from a mulligan to 3, only 2 more poison counters and I would have won.

Thoughts
Well the deck hasn't lost anything since the last time I played with it, in fact it feels greatly improved now with the new additions. I have a very out of budget version I'm going to show you now as well which I wanted to try out.
Before the deck I have something for you to ponder, are slivers slimy or is there skin like that of a snake or could it be the breed of the sliver that dictates how its skin is defined.
This deck does cost a fortune especially since its pauper its currently just over $19 from MTGOTraders.
Deck Goal
The idea came from a classic Flash deck I've been playing with in the tournament practice room where you Flash into play a Protean Hulk don't pay the casting cost so it's sent to the graveyard, in return you can choose creatures up to a casting cost of 6 from your deck and place them into play. I've been using the sliver version which uses a Heart Sliver and 4 Virulent Sliver's. You can win on turn 1 with this combo if you're lucky.
Well back to this deck the idea is to get those slivers out of your hand as quickly as possible by using the Lotus Petal's and Simian Spirit Guide's. It's no turn one kill but it may give someone a fright.
Games
I won't give you a full run down but the deck fared very well in the early game but had issues with the last 7 life points most games. I took out 3 mountains and replaced them with Sinew Sliver's which helped but it's still missing an ingredient any ideas?

The second deck of the article is going to be based around the soldier tribe. There's a lot of them in pauper so I thought I'd give them ago.
Let's see what we have to base the deck around
Creatures
Spells
| Disenchant |
$0.03 ME3 |
I expect to see some Esper decks so this could be useful |
| Exile |
$0.05 |
Always a good form of removal as long as you’re not playing White |
| Fire at Will |
$0.03 |
This could be a very powerful card |
| Oblivion Ring |
$0.08 ALA |
The most versatile removal card around |
| Piety Charm |
$0.02 |
This could be ok, works well with soldiers |
| Raise the Alarm |
$0.03 |
Two soldier tokens at instant speed, very useful |
| Recumbent Bliss |
$0.03 |
I expect to this card around a lot |
| Soldier Replica |
$0.02 |
Not sure about this card |
| Unmake |
$0.15 |
Again another excellent removal spell |

Deck
Current price on MTGOTraders as of 06/09/09 $3.12
Deck Goal
The deck is based on the soldier theme and will greatly benefit from cycling the Gempalm Avenger. I decided to also include Guardian of the Guildpact as well as it's a great card, I'm not sure how it will fare with the the Shards of Alara cards though.

Game 5 vs Raziau
My starting hand this game is 2 plains, 2 Oblivion Ring’s, Ballynock Cohort, Brainstorm and Akrasan Squire
I start out with the Squire and Raziau plays a Tidehollow Strix which I Disenchant in my next turn.
Raziau plays a Screeching Sliver so I know it’s going to be mill deck, this means I need to put everything into my attacks and not hold any creatures in my hand. I play Ballynock Cohort and start attacking with my squire, next turn I Oblivion Ring the sliver and my cohort is taken out by Last Gasp.
I’m made to discard 2 cards when Raziau casts Consult the Necrosages. I draw Raise the Alarm and attack, while Raziau plays Vedalken Entrancer this guy is a problem due to his high toughness.
My turn comes round and I Oblivion Ring the Entrancer and send in my three taking Raziau down to 11 life. Raziau plays Screeching Sliver and Cathartic Adept both milling creatures.
I attack in my turn again with the two soldier tokens from Raise the Alarm. Raziau plays Memory Sluice and conspires it so I lose the top 8 cards of my library and then follows up with Tome Scour just to rub it in. I’m now down to 36 cards in my library.
Next turn I draw a plains and send in my 3, the Akrasan Squire is Last Gasped and I only hit for 2 damage. Raziau passes without doing anything.
In go the soldier’s again Raziau blocks and we both lose are creatures. Raziau comes back in his turn with a second Vedalken Entrancer.
I draw a Brainstorm and pass as I have no islands at this point in time. Raziau also passes as well.
Ballynock Cohort is the next from the top of my deck, followed the turn after by Gempalm Avenger which I hard cast to increase my attacking capability’s. Raziau plays another Tidehollow Strix.
I draw into Veteran Swordsmith and attack with the Cohort and Avenger losing the Avenger to the Strix, this takes Raziau down to 3 life. Next turn I go in with the Swordsmith and Cohort for the win.
At the end of the game I had 13 cards remaining in my library.
Win 4

Thoughts
I really like playing this deck it was fun and stands a good chance at winning. The Elite Javelineer is a top card I would not have found playing any other formats. I’d recommend you give the deck a try it doesn’t cost much. You may want to go mono white and take out the Brainstorm’s, I left them in when they came up in later games they were quite useful, thinking about it now maybe Ponder would have been a better choice as it gives you the option to shuffle your library.
As I was typing up this article the following became available via the ME3 pre-release events, do you think they would be worth trying out in the soldier deck?
Ok that's it form me for this article I hope you enjoyed it, next time I'll be looking at a few Kaleidoscope decks while I'm waiting for the ME3 prices to fall.
On a bonus note both the sliver and soldier deck's are legal in the Tribal Classic format as well.

The core of your Build 2 (and especially Build 3) Sliver Zoo decks are the basic staples of the G/W Slivers deck that is popular in the Pauper scene. That core is: Muscle Sliver, Sinew Sliver, Plated Sliver and Virulent Sliver. One consideration you might have is stealing one more creature from that popular deck - Spinneret Sliver. It's superior to Canopy Spider in almost every way, especially when combined with either Muscle, Sinew or Plated Sliver.
I do like the concept of blending in Red slivers to give you access to potent red spells such as Lightning Bolt, however.
I did look at Spinneret Sliver but the mana cost put me off, I'll give it a try and see how it plays out.
ummm the mana cost is the exact same as the spider you were running, one colorless, and one green
oops for some reason i thought it was 4 mana
Great organization of the article, but the decks aren't very strong. GW Slivers has proven itself and I don't think the red addition is necessary.
I've played White Weenie in the 2-man queues quite a bit and it is a strong choice. However, I think the soldier-variation makes it a bit clunkier and it loses some of its punch (it's no longer playing all of the best, independently powerful, White dudes.)
Since you're targeting Pauper I don't know that it's necessary to also consider 'on a budget'. While there are a few decks that are just more expensive, there are several tier 1 or 2 decks that are both powerful and cheap.
I enjoyed the article's layout and readability - I'd like to see more if you dive into sanctioned play and report your findings in the queues or a Premier Event.
Thanks for the reply
All my articles are budget based, I choose to look at the Pauper format this time round.
Sanctioned play is something I've never tried to be honest as I never feel my decks are good enough.
Would you the readers find it more interesting if I took this step out of the casual room and tried the queues or a Daily Event (I dont have time for more than 4 rounds at any one time), leave a reply I'm very interested to find out.
I think the problem here is that you happened to pick Slivers and there is a Tier-1 Sliver deck out there for Pauper already, has been for a while. Your deck was always going to be compared against it.
I don't think you need to play sanctioned stuff with your decks if you are not comfortable that they are good enough.
You perhaps need to avoid building a deck that exists unless you are making some point about the original or some comparison between it and what you build.
Hope that helps....
I would appreciate seeing the daily event write up. I spend most of my time in the casual room because I usually spend my minuscule amount of tickets on a new pauper deck. As a result, I haven't partaken in any of the Pauper weekend challenges or other events.
