Appendix – Decklists

(Decks are listed below in alphabetical order. I may have updated some lists from their actual tournament data, like upgrading Blood Crypt to Badlands or Imperial Seal to Vampiric Tutor. More important edits, if any, are listed in the deck blurbs.)
Ad Nauseam Storm
Event: Legacy tournament (decklist slightly adapted for Classic)

This deck seeks to accelerate into its namesake card as fast as possible, after which the deck draws a lot of cheap spells. This enables a high storm count and a lethal Tendrils. Some versions sport more discard or Angel’s Grace, which allows Ad Nauseam to draw out the entire deck. The recent restriction to Demonic Consultation was a huge blow to the archetype; the proximate restriction of mana from the upkeep phase passing to the draw phase (for example, when Ad Nauseam has been placed on the top of the library) could be a death knell.

 


Affinity

This deck can churn out huge threats at huge discounts thanks to the affinity mechanic. The sum is truly greater than its parts here. Skullclamp + Disciple of the Vault can quickly lead to a combo like finish with Ravager present. Indeed, this deck plays with several toys banned in other formats.
 
One possible Affinity variant highlights Erayo, Soratami Ascendant; when Erayo ‘ascends’, the opponent is left tied in knots. Another might splash white for Ethersworn Canonist and Enlightened Tutor. I’ve used it myself to make to top 8s as a shell for the Painter/Grindstone combo. The red splash here for Atog and Fling (sometimes Shrapnel Blast instead) gives the deck needed reach and speeds it up by a turn, if necessary. The bottom line is that Affinity is an archetype that has a lot of room for exploration. Artifact hate is not as prevalent in the metagame as it once was and the two worst offenders, Null Rod and Kataki, War’s Wage, have fallen away from sideboards completely, making Affinity an alluring option.

 

Aggro Loam

This deck sports a unique attacking strategy – disable their mana supply while dropping huge threats. Once the engine is going, it has a certain inevitability about it. Counting tutors, the deck sports 8 copies of its namesake card, which it uses to recycle Wasteland every turn or for one or more cycle lands which make for a lot of free draws. Chalice of the Void is possibly a metagame choice and could be replaced by a set of Duress (and perhaps a singleton Raven’s Crime), but takes advantage of the fact that the opponent is not likely to have much mana to work with, especially after successfully casting Devastating Dreams. Mox Diamond really gives the deck the extra gas it needs, discarding land cards that will soon be returning via Loam.


Aluren

This deck accelerates into its 4-mana namesake enchantment. From there, barring disruption, a single Imperial Recruiter is sufficient to win on the spot where other options allow for more mundane wins. Personally, I would be inclined to include two copies of Parasitic Strix in case it gets exiled somehow. You can read the author’s summation of the deck here.  This deck gets a new tool out of the theme deck box set that was released this past week in Raven Familiar. 

 

Bant Aggro

This deck is perfectly positioned between anti-aggro and aggro/control. It sports creatures with high toughness and several lifegain spells to cause red deck fits and it presents enough questions with enough counter backup to keep control decks off balance. The speed is respectable enough to make combo decks run into its counterspells and Meddling Mage picks up the garbage. I doubt this deck has overwhelming advantage against any deck, but it is also well-positioned to at least go down swinging in any matchup as well.

Baseruption

The quintessential non-linear aggro-control deck, Baseruption, by definition, pairs the CounterTop engine with effective but customizable disruptive threats, in particular Dark Confidant. Ideally, those three cards counter every spell the opponent plays and draw an extra turn each turn. When the ideal isn’t available, this deck relies on creatures to hold down the fort until an answer is found or the engine comes online. Against, true Control decks, these creatures add significant early pressure with essentially the same counter suite as their slower counterparts. The Classic tutors allow the deck to reasonably reduce to three Counterbalance, an option not available to the Legacy version.

Belcher Storm

Bomberman

This deck seeks to play Auriok Salvagers with access to both Lion’s Eye Diamond and one of the Spellbombs. From there, it can generate infinite mana and draw infinite cards at once. It has a pretty good draw-go game in the meantime, as far as combo decks are concerned.
 
(Note: I was a bit unhappy with the lists that I found from MTGO online events, preferring this one. However, even this one made a black splash for Extirpate and some sideboard cards, which I cut to merely round up numbers already in the list. I would also look strongly at adding Counterbalance before entering an event.)

BW* Control – Trinket Stalker

The B/W control deck excels at two things: hand disruption and board control. The once popular Trinket Stalker version splashes blue for slight improvements in card selection. My gut reaction doesn’t like the splash (unless this deck could possibly run Academy Ruins successfully – the list below doesn’t try it, so probably not) – since the various in-color tutors should make up for the lack of Trinket and Brainstorm. Regardless, I love me a deck with a good silver bullet suite; these bullets could use some obvious updating for today’s metagame, but I assume the reader gets the general idea.  Don’t miss the HelmLine combo in the sideboard for whenever Leyline is strong, the opponent is not expecting it, or you’re desperate for a plan B. Hopefully once Scrubland (the B/W dual land) comes online, this deck and B/W control in general gets a lot more looks.

Deadguy Ale has been synonymous with B/W Hand/Land Destruction and popularized ever since Chris Pikula took it to a 2nd place Legacy Grand Prix finish. Classic lacks Sinkhole still but most of the deck is available. The list below is a rough sketch, probably too light on threats and too heavy on hand disruption. It also features my propensity for a toolbox suite in the sideboard. If you can use hand disruption to take out their removal, Sculler and Specter will do a good job crippling their chances. Please note that many lists these days splash green for a bevy of powerful spells, possibly including Tarmogoyf, Pernicious Deed, Maelstrom Pulse, Krosan Grip, and Choke/Compost.

Dragon Combo

This deck ultimately seeks to reanimate Worldgorger Dragon with access to either Oona or Laquatus. Reanimating a Dragon will create an infinite loop where permanents enter and leave play. With each iteration, you can tap your lands creating infinite mana, giving you a path to victory with the aforementioned kill spells. With Read the Runes access, you can also draw your deck. The deck is considered fragile as one well-timed Counterspell, removal spell, or Stifle-effect can leave the user utterly crippled.
 
This version, brewed together from a variety of sources, seeks to have a fast combo with lots of answers to disruption, and a strong Reanimator suite that takes advantage of the fact that Entomb is unrestricted. The sideboard can passably transform into Team America, reanimating your opponent’s discarded threats; it’s always good when a combo deck can keep the opponent guessing as to which plan represents your intentions.

Here is a deck predicated on spell denial. For example, some Classic Zoo decks have placed with not even a three-drop on the mana curve; a single Trinisphere makes all their spells three drops. Chalice of the Void on turn 1 for one mana off Ancient Tomb or Chrome Mox or Simian Spirit Guide, can shut off half of a Zoo or Elf deck. The CounterTop deck with a lot more mana sources and a higher curve can still be caught letting one of the 6-8 Moon effects slip by, turning all their powerful duals into colorless mana. Once the mana denial mission is accomplished, the deck plops down a Dragon and goes to town. Yes, the list below doesn’t run any, however 4 Rakdos Pit Dragon is almost standard for the archetype. The sideboard strikes me as a little eccentric, and I would be tempted to run a mixture of sweepers, anti-counterspell measures, graveyard control, lifegain (probably Jitte), artifact control and possibly Pithing Needle. The one below is close enough and keeps the opponent on his toes.

The absolutely newest cat’s meow in the MTGO Classic deck archives, it remains to be seen how much of an impact this deck will create. Given an opponent with no counterspells, it simply tries to find and cast its namesake card with another engine piece in hand. From there, it can basically go infinite on the turn, burying the opponent with multiple copies of Cruel Ultimatum (getting all four in one turn may not be a stretch). Now that the deck can be considered viable, fast enough to at least score in the right metagame, the question revolves around how the deck can be improved. Does it want to play Conflux? How can it punch though counter walls? As an aggro player, I definitely enjoy seeing the backup plan here of Blue Skies with the utility triumvirate of Clique, Sower, and Efreet, backed by Jitte. I’m not sure it’s the best plan, but it will keep an opponent guessing from week to week as new deck technology is discovered. If you’re a deckbuilding aficionado, this deck’s for you.

Dredge

This deck seeks to quickly fill up the graveyard by means of the Dredge mechanic. Whenever it has an opportunity to draw a card, the dredge enablers will typically add 5-6 cards to the graveyard instead. The rest of the deck is built on that premise. An army can be quickly assembled with multiple Bridges and flashbacked Dread Returns. From there, beatdown, sometimes winning as early as turn 2. The deck will face a lot of crippling cards from the opposition throughout the event like Leyline of the Void, but it has the speed and the resiliency to deal with all but the opponent’s best draws.

Elves – Elf Combo

This deck, more than any other, highlights the engine motif with its myriad interchangeable parts, all designed to draw more parts and create more parts to keep the engine going. Left to its own devices, this takes places as early as turn 2, but turn 3 is the norm. That kind of speed and consistency enables a combo-like kill, based on a high storm count, however, it must also occasionally take on other roles as well, such as when the lone Grapeshot copy has been stripped away and/or removed from the game). Other combo-like aspects are large amounts of life and 1/1 insects when either Essence Warden or Wirewood Hivemaster are active.  Nothing can touch the power though of Earthcraft and Squirrel Nest which creates infinite tokens for lethal damage on the next turn along with whatever other bonuses infinite squirrels entering play will create.  The elves are quite resilient to hate with Grip and Viridian Shamans taking out the powerful artifacts and enchantments which stand in its way. Sometimes, though, a deck has gone so far afield to contain the combos, it has no resources left to contain the creatures that peck for one point of damage at a time. Over a couple of turns this cumulative Aggro damage can add up to a multifaceted victory.

This deck simply wants to produce enough mana to play its eponymous card. From there it should be able to lock the game up easily with either Form of the Dragon or Solitary Confinement or both. In the meantime, Squee and Confinement combine to form an almost invincible lock themselves. This deck seems to lack the punch of other combo decks, not strictly winning on the spot, and more vulnerable to disruption than others.

Here is a B/G Aggro deck typically based on Dark Ritual that can handle any kind of permanent and features a solid threat suite from utility to card advantage to fat. This version eschews Rituals to fit in a timely Kitchen Finks to help fight against the prevalent red decks of its time. This archetype is in the middle of deck construction crossroads. If you take out the weaker spells and add blue counterspells, you have Team America. If you take out the weaker threats and add more disruption, you have B/G Pox. If you take out the green, you have a faster, more consistent deck that can’t handle problematic enchantments or artifacts. Play this deck, then, over the others if the field has little combo, a solid burn-backed aggro component, and several non-linear aggro-control strategies. Pernicious Deed and Choke are two enchantments I might consider sideboard material as well.

I piloted this deck to five top 8 appearances including two wins. The disruption package is formidable, each component dealing severe blows to combo decks of all shapes and sizes. The Landstill theme is represented with 8 manlands and Standstill, backed by Aether Vial and a disruptive creature suite, all 2-drops. The deck is noticeably less powerful and slower than Merfolk and it has a shakier manabase, but in a combo/linear environment, this deck can strike with a dagger’s precision. Some noteworthy variations include a black splash, primarily for Dark Confidant, or playing Stifles and their favorite target, Phyrexian Dreadnought.

This deck seeks to play Protean Hulk off of Flash, principally fetching Disciples, with Phyrexian Marauders and Shifting Walls to boot which quickly kill the opponent as they enter and leave play. Phyrexian Dreadnought (along with a Stifle or two) are used in some versions to fulfill the same role and serve as a reasonable backup plan. This version runs a Cunning Wish engine package to deal with various roadblocks. Other configurations also employ a riskier mana base (5-color lands).

GAT, or Grow-a-Tog, or Gro, is a fine Aggro-Control deck that is light on threats but heavy on cheap disruption. Lorescale Coatl from Shards of Alara has replaced the deck’s namesake, growing to huge proportions over the course of just a couple of turns. The casual observer may not realize that even playing a single Brainstorm gives the Coatl a permanent +3/+3. This deck’s thesis is that such a strategy is powerful enough to go the distance. Burn in particular is forced to race under unfavorable circumstances since it lacks relevant creature control. I might be inclined to add a Counterbalance/Sensei’s Divining Top engine as the Top can boost Coatl by itself and combined with Counterbalance can lock out decks that sit low on the curve. I also have concerns about the mana base, which is light on overall numbers and basics, and casting lots of spells is critical for the deck’s overall success.

Goblins – B/R Goblins

This deck can spit out a horde of diminutive red guys relatively fast out of nowhere thanks to the strong engine. What they can’t overcome in size, they take down in numbers. The non-traditional black splash provides the sizeable beatstick, Earwig Squad, which also takes out your opponent’s three most important spells in their library – a sure death knell vs. combo decks. Other similar versions feature the strong finisher, Patriarch’s Bidding, which allows the deck to recover from a devastated board position or prolonged wars of attrition, bringing back all the Goblins for a combo-like kill with Sharpshooter, a feat the mono-red versions of the deck can’t achieve. In this list, I’m concerned about mana flood (he runs 30 mana sources) and would want to include Cabal Therapy in the board to set up Earwig Squad.  I’m also skeptical about lack of Demonic Tutor and probably Vampiric as well. One omission I’m more comfortable with is Skullclamp as the deck needs some threats to stick and already enjoys a healthy engine. Finally, the author may want to consider Wasteland/Mutavault over some of the Mountains.

This deck is a special brew that my clan has been working on a little recently in the wake of the neutering of NecroSpike. Disruption-wise, it seems to have a little something for everyone, sporting lots of pinpoint removal, bodies big enough to impress Zoo, copious lifegain, and a full tutor suite to meet the needs of most any game situation. With a diversified manabase, this deck recovers well from denial strategies. Twenty-one Jitte-wielding creatures really strain the opponent’s removal and counterspell count. There are a lot of interchangeable parts, when it comes down to it, so feel free to change numbers and cards to explore and to keep the opponent off-balance in his guesses.

This deck is more a trip down memory lane than anything else; however, it continues to make the rare appearance in Legacy top 8 lists or a Classic event early round. The idea is to take advantage of the Madness mechanic to get powerful spells on the cheap and to abuse the graveyard, particularly with Wonder, which allows the ground troops to attack unimpeded through the air. A bonus is having a natural anti-Pox strategy. Consistency and power concerns dominate the deck, recent powerful graveyard hosers damage the deck’s core strategy, and the power of individual cards has, for the most part, outdistanced the deck’s synergies. This version, amalgamated from several recent placing lists from deckcheck.net incorporates a Counterbalance engine and splashes for Swords. Other ideas might be abusing Academy Ruins (with Engineered Explosives) or Life from the Loam (with Wasteland), upping the Madness or Flashback counts, or incorporating some Fish-style elements.

Merfolk

One of the standout decks of the year, Merfolk is one of the most flexible you will ever see. Many of its parts play different roles based on the matchup, the stage of the game, or the board situation. Any of the Merfolk can take on a beatdown role as necessary when the opportunity arises, however the prime game plan is to neutralize the opponent’s plans as much as possible via counterspells, land destruction, or Vial plays while gaining incremental card advantage with Standstill or Fish-style creatures. Merfolk can handle about any threat thrown their way and can easily survive multiple Engineered Plagues with their two sets of lords. Another typical interaction in some lists belongs to a Wizards sub-theme abusing Riptide Laboratory with Silvergill Adept for repeated draw, with Spellstutter Sprite for repeated counters, and with Mutavault for repeated blockers.

Mono-Blue Control – DreadStill

The Dreadnought/Stifle combo (with redundant Trickbind and/or Vision Charm) can certainly fit in any number of shells (Affinity, Merfolk, various Control builds, anything with Trinket Mage, even the Disciple version of Flash decks), but certainly Mono-Blue Control (MUC) could hardly exist without it. The general idea is to gain control, put Dreadnought in play, Stifle its come-into-play trigger, and win in two attack steps, all with counterspell backup. If need be, the deck can even race out a turn-2 combo if the situation demands. The better Stifle is in any given environment (think: Storm Combo), the better this deck will be. This deck has disappeared over the past several months, no doubt due to its principal threat being a sitting duck to the ever prevalent Krosan Grip.

This deck’s basic tenet, play Natural Order into Progenitus and bash for the win in two turns, has been sighted throughout the past couple of months but has basically no direct top 8 experience. This untuned version uses a U/G shell to find Natural Order as soon as possible and protect it, either with counterspells or Vexing Shusher which doubles as a potential sacrifice outlet. It can play a rough resemblance to aggro-control if necessary.

Whoops – this is for historical record only at the moment. Both Necropotence and Demonic Consultation have been given the axe, and this deck has not recovered so far.
 
Before the restrictions, you simply played Necropotence as early as turn one and did so with surprising consistency. From there draw a bunch of cards, using Soul Spike to both wound the opponent and fuel the Necro engine, eventually setting up a lethal Tendrils. Tombstalker keeps other decks at bay, if needed, and doubles as a solid beatdown plan with evasion should the main win condition be neutralized. This version deemphasizes the secondary beatdown Stalker plan for more control elements both maindeck and in the board.

This deck seeks to play and activate Grindstone with a Painter’s Servant in play. This 2-card combo costs just 6 colorless mana total, which only needs 3 at any given time, thus best exemplifying combo efficiency. This combo can fit into any number of shells, but this list has proven popular and good. It has access to lots of fast mana; it will wreck greedy mana bases with 7 Moon effects; it makes stellar use of Painter’s Servant (make everything blue) with the best of red’s anti-blue spells. Imperial Painter ties the deck together nicely, fetching any number of killer targets, while also chump blocking and wielding a Jitte.

This deck seeks to play and activate Grindstone with a Painter’s Servant in play. This 2-card combo costs just 6 colorless mana total, which only needs 3 at any given time, thus highlighting combo efficiency. This combo can fit into any number of shells, but this list has been proven in many Legacy events as well. Plenty of tutor effects provide plenty consistency and a solid control game plan is great backup.
 
The Legacy list originally played 2008-10-18 by Carl Dillahay usually showcases 3 Counterbalance, 3 Sensei’s Divining Top, and 3 Lim-Dûl’s Vault which Uncle.Istvan was willing to trade in for legacy-banned pieces Consultation and Vampiric Tutor, as well Daze, Needle, and an extra land – solid choices given the speed of Classic. The only addition from the board is replacing one Grip for the Ruins.

Pox, the card, while now probably too situational to see constant play on the top level, has certainly laid the framework for little brother Smallpox to infest the Classic landscape. This deck is not Eva Green – a B/G aggro-disruption deck. That deck doesn’t remotely want to run Smallpox; this deck would run ten copies, if legal. Smallpox encapsulates the whole deck – attack the hand, attack the mana – neither on an all-out basis, but just enough to allow its huge threats to make short work of the opponent’s life total. Seven five-powered 2-drops is just scary. It is hard enough to land a solid threat against the deck, but running it into Smallpox is just taking it on the chin. The deck has play against the field, but is a bit susceptible to Burn’s low curve, rock solid mana base, and glut of instants. That’s why Kitchen Finks make their appearance here, but I still think I prefer Zuran Orb given the former’s GG mana cost, especially with Crucible recursion – maybe a little of both is correct. Another idea in Pox for enterprising deckbuilders to test out is The Rack – it has made some top 8 appearances, and even though I don’t think it’s strong enough, there may be an interaction I’m missing. One immediate upside is that it would allow the mana base to go all Swamps again. Regardless, this B/G version is a well-oiled, tournament-winning machine.

RDW – Burn

This one-dimensional deck offers the simplest of game plans, but its practitioners are well advised to learn all of its ins and outs, anticipate the typical metagame foils, and have the necessary sideboard cards. This deck will always be popular since it is relatively cheap and has had success in other formats as well. I have categorized this deck as Aggro since the decks various parts have no synergy; for the most part, any burn spell could simply be redesigned as an unblockable creature with shroud that is sacrificed at end of turn. Some mockingly/lovingly refer to it as a combo deck – cast any 6-7 spells and win.
 
The archetype deserves a lot of exploration and metagame shrewdness. What manabase maximizes damage or disruption while not allowing flooding, mana screw, or attacks from other decks? Will you need Ensnaring Bridge or Volcanic Fallout to deal with a creature rush? How about Pyrostatic Pillar or a splashed Duress to fend off various combo decks? How much will Blood Moon cripple your expected opponent? Does Pyroblast or Vexing Shusher give you better mileage for fighting counterspells? And so on. A final direction I would like to see explored more is along the lines of static damage through Ankh of Mishra or Manabarbs, or repeatable effects like Cursed Scroll.
 
In the list below, my personal preference is for Keldon Marauders over Spark Elemental since the latter gives added susceptibility to Engineered Plague, can’t soak your opponent’s damage, and flounders in the hand against early Goyfs.

This deck has a rather simple plan of putting a creature in the graveyard and animating it. This is done via Entomb (banned in Legacy) or perhaps the odd Thoughtseize, if you’ve already drawn an animation target. The rest of the deck merely protects the combo. After that, simply send the monster in the red zone.
 
Reanimator has not made any top 8s in Classic for a long time, although it has never been really put to the test; however there is a smattering of success in Legacy, even in the last couple of months. This list is my own creation, completely untested, more to be a conversation piece than anything else. The sideboard looks to address the burn matchup since each use of Reanimate will cost a minimum of eight life. Extirpate is for combo decks, graveyard decks, and when you see Edict effects.

When the animals escape from the Zoo, which deck should you be dialing up? This one. This list is, admittedly, dated from a Classic point of view, but The Rock is still battling to success in Legacy this year already (approximately 50 top 8 appearances according to deckcheck.net). Why the lack of love in Classic? Well, I think Necro legitimately killed it and people have forgotten about it since then. Aggro, Burn, and Aggro-Control litter the Classic landscape and this list has a lot of tools to fight them, while still being competitive with Control and Combo (the latter, at least, if winning the die roll). The Glittering Wish board is a bit novel, but more standard ideas work too; for one thing, I would like to see the usual tutors in the list. Spectral Lynx makes me laugh, but you have to admit, it does a great job at holding an opposing Tarmogoyf at bay. My inner Timmy wants to play Haunting Echoes in a deck like this – might be ok!
 
Note, there are more controlling versions of Rock with threat recursion via Genesis or through powerful deck manipulation like Gifts of the Given. Those are very slow and even in the Legacy events are very rare, all the more so for Classic.

Scepter Chant

Isochron Scepter paired with Orim’s Chant makes for one of the most potent combos in the game. It is sometimes paired with Teferi, Mage of Zhalfir to complete the deadly lock form which there is no escape (at least with the cards played in this format). Unlike in the Toolbox Zoo deck, where this combo is incidental, here it is the main course. The Zoo deck gets a lot of mileage out of a naked Chant, but this deck can’t (except against certain combo decks), so a control shell is in order. Once the combo is assembled, your opponent will only have instants and lands available. I am not a fan of this list for a couple of reasons, but unfortunately there wasn’t much to choose from that has placed recently. First, 22 lands is a bit light (two of which enter tapped), for a deck that is going to impose a 2-3 mana tax on itself as soon as possible (Scepter with or without the kicker). Secondly, without Teferi, the deck is a dog to Krosan Grip, and still has problems with a lot of other instants, like counterspells. I’m not saying I know how to incorporate Teferi in a sensible way, but I guess that is why this deck generally sits on the bench these days. Lastly, the Wishboard here looks a little overzealous, and could be pruned for useful spells like Moat, Circle, etc.

This deck seeks to play its namesake, 2 Sensei’s Divining Top, with a Helm of Awakening in play (alternately, one Top and one Future Sight is enough). This allows the player to play infinite spells (also drawing infinite cards with Future Sight), killing the opponent with a lethal Brain Freeze. A very formidable disruption package helps procure victory. The sideboarded Stifle serves as an answer to any Gaea’s Blessing shenanigans.
 
I took the liberty of providing my own unproven list here since the most recent lists available are already five months old* (and thus, no Intuition), aim at decks no longer on the radar, and fail to use Counterbalance, which strikes me as a worthy inclusion.
 
*I wrote that in February, kane732 has since made one top 8 with it recently.

This deck could be known as 20 performing bears.dec. Out of the twenty slivers, draw one of eight to protect the others, draw one of eight to pump up the others, and draw one of four to provide solid evasion for the team. Mix in a few counterspells, and you have a deck. The deck seems pretty consistent, if unexplosive. The questions seems to be whether one can dress up a bear well enough to make it match the Classic titans. This list gave the Slivers a counterspell control suite. That seems fine but these bears may prefer other beds, and alternative strategies like team pump, burn, draw, or even more Slivers are worth exploring as well.

Though I’ve not faced it yet, this interpretation of Stax is quite impressive on paper. Give this deck a couple of turns and you may not be able to cast a spell the rest of the game. Chalice can eat your 1- and 2- cost spells, Trinisphere ensures you need 3 mana, Armageddon (and its twin, Ravages of War) ensure you never get that much, and Prison and Field say no to all your threats. If that weren’t enough, Wasteland recursion with Crucible leaves you with basics only. Humility and Oblivion Ring mops up the rest. Control decks will most certainly be countering the wrong spells as they try to figure this deck out. I do think this deck will do poorly against Burn, and I would like to see sideboard help out more than merely depend on only three copies of a 4-drop. Vial-based strategies may be another potential weakness if the creature control isn’t drawn or is answered. The overall deck speed isn’t quite yet clear to me, but this is certainly an exciting option for those who like to pioneer new ideas – kudos to the author.

This is definitely one of the decks of most people’s Magic youth, brought here back in full glory (admittedly, minus Bad Moon, but that card is no longer necessary). Suicide sports a formidable threat package and can disrupt the opponent’s hand, board threats, and mana base all without consistency issues of its own.
 
I’m not a fan of this first-place list due to its mana needs – it curves high with more three-drops than one-drops or two-drops, and seven of those three drops (Cavalier and Apparition) require a lot of mana to fully function. Confidant also underperforms when the curve is steep. The list could probably use an Urborg to help out the black mana requirements. Above all, I’d like to see the two best tutors – Demonic and Vampiric – and perhaps a Bitterblossom or two as another must-counter spell for the blue-based control decks. However, if the mana is not an issue – the steep curve dodges Counterbalance issues admirably and delivers a slew of hefty threats, most of which can take out large chunks of life rapidly.

Untapping with Tezzeret in play is a hard position to lose from: attack for 20 out of nowhere with Tezzeret’s ultimate ability. This deck sports a boatload of counters with plenty of board control to boot to ensure that point in the game arrives, all backed up with Academy Ruins recursion. Aggro decks get stuck at the Bridge (if not locked out by Counterbalance, Explosives, and Chalice) while Control cedes card advantage to the Landstill package and have few cards to handle Decree of Justice. Moreover the sideboard sneaks in the tricky HelmLine combo to add yet another dimension to the deck.   
 
The list below contains a U/W Control shell (with black splashes in the sideboard for Leyline and Plague); instead, GeMesiter took this same archetype to three top 8 finishes staying in two colors U/G. I admit I’m sick of seeing Tarmogoyf in every list, so I present the former here, but the other has several important alternative maindeck ideas, so allow me to present the non-mana changes: +4 Brainstorm, +4 Tarmogoyf, +2 Thirst for Knowledge, +3 Trinket Mage, +1 Vedalken Shackles for -4 Chalice of the Void, -4 Counterspell, -1 Decree of Justice, -3 Swords to Plowshares, -1 Standstill, -1 Sensei’s Divining Top. Basically the latter version appreciates blockers and more draw spells more than pure control; both seem like fine ideas.

This deck is a little creation of my own invention. It plays out somewhat like the B/G Pox deck, dealing with threats as they come, but unlike that deck, employs a virus-like attack, discovering the opponent’s soft spots and festering the wound. I find it rather twisted in a fun way, at least for the deck’s pilot. There are no threats, unless Witness and Factory count. The premise of the strategy is simply to eliminate all the threats the opponent can inflict on you with Extirpate and a Haunting Echoes set up by copious discard until he gets decked. Witness can pick up either piece from the grave for a second iteration. Slow control decks with few threats are in for some bad news. Against three-color decks, Wasteland on a dual land and then Extirpating it has a decent chance of stranding all the spells of that color. When casting Echoes, make sure to leave any card which is dead in their deck to increase their ratio of dead draws. I predict fast red decks, principally Zoo, could be problematic for the deck, so the sideboard switches gameplans for games two and three. The deck is mostly untested, so a different configuration to handle an unexpected metagame threat would not surprise me. Have fun working on this!

Thresh is an archetype that has floundered over the past four months in the Classic metagame, having largely been taken over within Control ranks by the CounterTop engine. Mongoose and Mystic Enforcer (of the white version) were not so impressive in the light of Wild Nacatl and Relic of Progenitus which just wrecks the deck. I’m presenting the red splash version here (also known as Canadian Thresh), partly to distinguish it from those typical UGw CounterTop lists and party due to the better splash options red allows. Some people try both, and some prefer neither, opting to hit Black for Duress.
 
Don’t be fooled by the date of this list – this deck placed three times in the top 16 of the most recent $5,000 Legacy event. True, Legacy benefits from a cleaner manabase with the availability of Tropical Island and Volcanic Island, but the Classic version is still respectable and slightly more Wasteland-proof. My only question is the sideboard where I might prefer Pyroblast over Nourish, but that could easily be construed as a metagame call.

UB* Control – Psychatog

This deck goes old school draw-go, pairing Psychatog with an array of counters and draw spells, making full use of the fabulous Fact or Fiction. This deck doesn’t even want Counterbalance so much since the cards themselves serve as Tog fodder in the graveyard. Meloku is another beast that can quickly take over a game by itself, but its synergies with Psychatog are undeniable. It’s hard for the opponent to survive more than a turn afterwards. Fellow control players are ill-advised to match the draw-go plan due to the full complement of Extirpate in the sideboard: Swords to Plowshares might work once (and possibly not that many, if discarded), but only once. Overall, a fun take on a control deck, that looks very skill-intensive.

UBg Control – Team America

This is a U/B Control deck that splashes green for Tarmogoyf and sometimes Pernicious Deed as well as Krosan Grip in the side. The threat suite, which is actually rather hefty for a control deck, doesn’t need many turns to be lethal. Unfortunately, the mana disruption, while plentiful and poignant, is not recursive and can be undone by enemy Moxen, Life from the Loam, or Crucible of Worlds. The deck hopes that the mana disruption buys at least a couple of turns for its beef. I might prefer a sideboard that could transform into a Gro/GaT deck by adding Lorescale Coatl and Gush to push past other control decks. Other sideboard possibilities to consider are Hydroblast, Extirpate, and Vedalken Shackles (or the aforementioned Deed). Overall, I think decks are too fast and linear in this environment for this deck to fully shine.

This deck, also known in Legacy circles as It’s the Fear, has been the most successful control deck in the Classic metagame all year, being the frequent weapon of choice of the Player of the Year leader and author of the list below. There is nothing exotic here – just the brutal force of the Counterbalance engine (four copies of both parts), with the best aggro-control card in Tarmogoyf, and a deadly endgame plan based on Intuition. Intuition can cripple the opponent’s manabase with Life from the Loam and Wasteland, or play the stall game with LotL and recurring Mishra’s Factory; if it needs to reset the board, it simply grabs Engineered Explosives and Academy Ruins. The usual plethora of draw and disruption along with that kind of flexibility makes this deck an all-star.

Pair the best control cards in blue with the best cards in white and theory says you should have a decent deck. What exactly does white have to offer? Wrath, Moat, Humility, Elspeth, anti-red shutdown, the uncounterable and powerful Decree of Justice, and the recursive Eternal Dragon. If the metagame makes these cards powerful, then this deck is a solid choice. Moat and Circle of Protection: Red impress me the most, anyways. The Landstill package makes most sense here to avail itself of Faerie Conclave, but the U/W Control player need not be wedded to that as there are plenty of other sources for card advantage. For example, the rise of Merfolk with their own Landstill package and Æther Vial has put somewhat of a damper on this plan. Please note that many splashes are available, especially in black.
 
With regards to the list below, I fully admit to not being an expert, but I feel it’s criminal not to have Counterbalance in the list especially since it is already running two Top, even if only as a singleton for the Enlightened Tutor. Speaking of tutors, I would prefer to see both Vampiric and Demonic as well. My last suggestion would be to add the Planeswalker package of double Elspeth and Jace which skirts Wrath nicely, gets past Moat, creates inevitability, and all for very little mana investment.

Naya Zoo is comprised of the most efficient 1- and 2- drops the game of Magic has to offer. It adds on some less efficient, but more problematic disruptive creatures in the form of Gaddock Teeg, Ethersworn Canonist, Burning-Tree Shaman, Qasali Pridemage and others in the numbers that the metagame dictates is best. Burn finishes up whatever couldn’t cross the finish line. My only concern with the list below is the ability to fight a Counterbalance engine, and would prefer several copies of Krosan Grip in the board. Some lists have used an Extended motif and tried to abuse the Domain mechanic instead.

This version can pass as a reasonable facsimile of the stock Naya Zoo list above but it also runs a tutor suite with access to some of the most powerful strategy hosers in the game. Even if you can’t hose a deck, tutoring for a Scepter for the imprinting of a Chant or Helix is a powerful play, as would be adding Jitte to win the mirror match. Finding a lifesaving Explosives or Runed Halo is also invaluable; and that is just what the tutor suite offers in the maindeck. Orim’s Chant itself is basically a Time Walk against other aggro decks or decks featuring sorcery-speed removal – following up two or three one-drop creatures with a Chant or two is game over. As a general rule, the more linear and/or combo-oriented the metagame, the more this version should be preferred over its more popular brother. However, the level of artifact and enchantment removal should be considered as well.

Lots of great decks listed here. I personally like the last one listed (Toolbox Zoo).
I'm strictly a Classic player, and by no master deck builder. It's enjoyable for me personally to get ideas and see what components/mechanics competitive deck builders use.

Fantastic there mr ben. very good tool for players of all skill levels and interest in the format. my one quam though is that bearnamedsnuffy outright won a half dozen pes with bomberman and i won the eternal strugle special chalenge wit it as well. i kinda feel like one of those lists would have been better then a legacy build as it was a proven winning list in the format that the article is representing.
