Monday the Gatecrash spoilers came out on the Dailymtg.com.  I started working again this week after a six week layoff, and wanted to hang out with Will before work made things harder than they need to be.  Will had been talking my ear off about the spoilers, and I had yet to see them because I am not really prereleasing this weekend (I have my son, it seems we can do better stuff than stay inside and watch me play magic.  Here is hoping for snow so we can build snowmen!) So I went over to his house to talk about the spoilers.  While we talking I mentioned something about having podcaster rights on the site, and we started to record ourselves.

Of note, the recording is rough.  We used his pc, which is a self-contained unit, so there will be a buzzing sound in the background, I'm also noticing the time, because I think a good podcast can do what it wants to do in forty or so minutes.  With that said, I am going to put the soundcloud widget up and let you all know that we started off with Orzhov, and around 19:30 into the cast we start to discuss Dimir.

We hope you enjoy the cast, we have two more castings that we hope to have up as soon as possible.  Give us any comments, any ways to improve and hopefully we'll be able to implement those in the future.  Also if you think we're off base on any of the card evaluations take us to task in the comment section!

For some reason the Soundcloud gizmo doesn't quite want to work in firefox.

I also have a recommendation for the next time you guys do this: Get yourselves some headphone/mics so that we can't hear the background and your voices are clearly audible. I found myself straining at some points to understand what you guys were talking about.

For the most part I agreed with your assessments. The Living Death reprint seems like it will be an insane house in combination with Faithless Looting and or Forbidden Alchemy/Mulch.

The Specter is akin to Praetor's grasp and will be playable if you are also running Chromatic Lantern and or Farseek. I realize this seems like a greedy mana base but it works.

In combination with the scrying card this could be quite good. Not sure how competitive it will be but then most dimir mill cards tend to not quite make that cut. PTQs aside I think there will be quite a few FNM Standard decks sporting some unusual strategies.

The downside is that it is lame to super aggro such as the boros stuff coming out at the same time. Will need to run a strong control component to slow the aggro player down. In fact the Specter may just be sideboarded out vs those kind of decks.

As I understood it, there was no limitation on when or what you could play off the specter.
You could hit land and play them and not need to run outside mana fixing as your opponent would already be providing.
And just consider yourself up on cards, no?

Yeah well that is somewhat true but also dilutes the power of the card. It is possible to just use him as a hit to the hand and hope to eventually find mana to cast stuff with.
