THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

Man, I just had the most awful week, which unfortunately ruins my announced plans of getting the Eldritch Moon evaluation (and Angelpedia update) ready for publishing. Sorry about that! I can give you a preview here, though, in the form of an announcement: we have a new tribe! Which is an old tribe! Didn't you notice? Thanks to Eldritch Moon and Emrakul's influence, Hippogriff went from 2 to 4 members, which means it's now playable, with a little help from a changeling!

They're not even terrible, overall!

This also means our New Kids on the Block Award is back! Be the first to win a match with the winged grypho-equines (an actual match, no bye or no-show win) and you'll get the one-time prize! And since we don't know how soon we'll get another occasion like this, the prize is raised to 3 tix! Get your Hippo and your Griff in order and bring them to the field asap!

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 6.31, Week 292 BE
  • Date: August 6
  • Attendance: 17
  • Rounds: 4
  • Subformat: Underdog
  • Winner: Golden_Lin (Archon)
  • 1 Loss: Socanelas (Archon), mihahitlor (Plant), Yokai_ (Berserker), TLR (Kor), Bruno_Dogma (Rat), ScionOfJustice (Weird)
  • Underdog Prize: Generalissimo (Fox)
  • Tribes: Archon (x2), Berserker, Centaur, Crab, Dryad, Fox, Horror, Kor, Plant (x3), Rat, Rebel, Soltari, Specter, Weird
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

Last Saturday was Bazaar of Baghdad's birthday! Happy whatever the number was! It was the perfect occasion for... a win by anybody else. Especially Archon, which had two registered deck to their names, and ended up in the first two places. That's something, even for a strong reanimator tribe like they currently are, as demonstrated by Golden_Lin, who nailed his first victory of the year...

...and, to the opposite side of the world (I think), Socanelas. Now, can you find the differences between the two lists? Would you believe they amount to a 50% increase value from Golden_Lin's to Socanelas's list?

All while Generalissimo made the correct call about Fox being the smallest, less-played, less-successful tribe around.

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the third quarter of 2016. The quarter will end September 24. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Congratulations to last quarter's winner, Generalissimo!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

Wanna test your deck? Tell us when you're online, and look who else is there and when! All of this here!

I was actually kind of surprised to find Foxes are still eligible for True Underdog prizes; they're not amazing by any means but they make for a solid white weenie tribe and I figured they would have lost their unpopular status by this point.

I am happy to have been able to win the prize with a tribe that's pretty close to actual dogs though.

It amuses me that you've got foxes, hounds, wolves and even a hyena for canines, but 'Cat' covers every variant of feline.

That is odd. I think there used to be "Lion" and "Tiger" creature types in the early days of Magic, before they rationalised a bunch of the less used types out of existence. I guess they kept the distinctions between the different canids just to make sure things didn't become too rational.

There are two types of people in the world...Cat lovers and a thousand different breeds of dog owners.
