Okay yes, the type line blurb was a little over dramatic, but Yawgmoth, Thran Physician is actually just completely dumb and gross, so I thought we should probably look at some ways we can break the format with him.

A NOTE ABOUT THIS DECK!

Okay look, this deck's entire theme is a really super gross combo. It's likely you will play the deck once and then decide its not worth the loss of friends it will eventually lead to. Also, this deck doesn't require many difficult decisions and is pretty straight forward for a combo deck. If you're looking for complex, this deck is not for you, Brad.

UNDYING SUITE IS SWEET! HOW IT KILLS.

Sounds like a sweet mono Black commander, but how does the sick combo work? Yawgmoth, Thran Physician in play with two of the following Undying creatures:

Geralf's Messenger
Butcher Ghoul
Demonlord of Ashmouth
Endling
Evernight Shade
Mikaeus, the Unhallowed
Sightless Ghoul

Sacrifice one of these to Yawgmoth, placing a -1-1 counter on a creature and paying one life, the Undying trigger makes the creature come back into play with a +1+1 counter. Now pay 1 life and do it again, sacrificing the OTHER creature and placing the -1-1 counter on the OTHER Undying creature. That's it, a dirty infinite combo that requires three cards and a good amount of mana.

Okay fine, so you actually want to WIN the game, huh? Well, let's get into the real meat of the deck. Given that we have an unlimited sacrifice outlet that costs us 1 life, we need to recover that life firstly, so we don't die in the process.

WHAT HELPS US WIN

Geralf's Messenger

Staring off the "oh I can just kill you now" part of the deck, Geralf's Messenger has a special message for you that reads "hey lose two life". Dross Harvester is the real deal in this deck to help us to... NOT lose the game due to our Commander's life tax. Each time we lose a creature, we gain 2 life. We have to be VERY careful because at the end of our turn, Dross hits us for four like a boss.

Blood Artist Falkenrath Noble Deathgreeter

Okay so we need to look towards an Aristocrats build as our main combo. This way we should be able to infinitely ping the table, player by player, to rein supreme. As per the above, the effect means that when we have a creature die, we are dealing damage out, but with these creatures we gain a life for each one.

Butcher of Malakir Grave Pact Dictate of Erebos

Butcher and Pact in this deck are simply amazing, every time we sacrifice a creature, we make our opponents sacrifice a creature.

Dark Prophecy

Prophecy says when a creature we control dies, we lose a life and draw a card. I do LOVE drawing cards and this old card is actually pretty sweet. Grim, being much the same, draws us a card when another non token creature dies. Also, we can get a nice big Living Death when we play our God-Eternal Bontu and sacrifice a bunch of creatures for all those Blood Artist triggers. We can also use Thrilling Encore to get back all the creature we sacrificed when God-Eternal Bontu hit play in an orgy of advantage and card draw that should help close out the game extremely fast.

Who doesn't want an entire undead token army, no one. And if your plans fall short, this can be another way to really sucker punch your entire table. Just be mindful that it only works on NON token creatures, but if we lose one of our Blood Artist types, this sure can get the job done. Remember, Yawgmoth's ability is instant so we can do it EOT and untap with a million little zombies.

PROLIFIC PROLIFERATION PERSISTENTLY PERFECTION

Oh, how can we forget a few good ways to abuse Yawgmoth, Thran Physician's second ability! PLANESWALKERS! Because for two Black mana and a discard, we can proliferate to our little black heart's content. Ad that means either Infect wins or Planeswalker shenanigans!

Dreadhorde Lili not only helps us draw cards for our sacrificial lambs, but it will only cost you three cards and 6 Black mana to ultimate the entire game out of reach for every other player and send them back to the dark ages. That's really scary and I don't want to ever have to face this ultimate. Imagine doing this late game and just smashing the entire table. You all get to keep a permanent of each type, I keep EVERYTHING I have. QQ.

Liliana of the Dark Realms

Liliana just keeps getting better the more I consider how broken her variations become with Yawgmoth on the table. Dark Realms Lili is in here for her amazing ultimate that makes all of your Swamps into massive 4B turbo lands. That's a fat stack of mana and when it happens, it will only cost you three cards and 6 Black mana. We don't care about anything else, only the mission of making turbo lands into Exsanguinate the entire board for a lot of life.

For three cards and 6 Black mana you get to draw seven cards, gain seven life and then play seven permanents. This means you can likely just get your combo going from Ugin alone and win the freaking game.

Karn Liberated

Is Karn liberated by not wearing any pants? I feel ya, buddy. Okay this one as a little harder to pull off unless we use something like out Cabal Coffers or out Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx because we need 16 black mana and to discard EIGHT cards. If we can do that, we can remove all non-aura cards from play and then return them all under our control. Whats your's is mine, whats mine is mine, everything is mine.

THE PROS

  • This deck is very easy to play and very straightforward.
  • Easily countered if you become the target/focus of the table. Be sure to play as nice as possible and not draw too much heat.
  • This is an expensive deck, but a lot of the pieces have value in other great EDH decks on both MODO and in paper.

THE CONS

  • This deck is very easy to play and very straightforward. That's not a typo repeat, that's TRUTH.
  • Okay fine, if you don't want to win via dirty gross combos, this deck is not for you. even with the amazing value engine.
