Welcome to the 10th installment of "Eternal Wisdom" - Death of the Skull
Since the last installement of this series an important announcement was made! The deck which has been dominating the classic scene since its inception has finally been dealt the blow many classic players had been expecting for some months. For those of you that missed the important notice here are the key facts.
Announcement Date: May 20
Effective Date: June 3 (during the maintenance downtime)
Classic*
Demonic Consultation is restricted.
Necropotence is restricted.
This means as I write the last Daily Event that could use a fully complement of the black skull is in the books (indeed the last event saw 3 Necropotence decks in the Top 8 including one deck taking the Win), so to me this seems to be the perfect time to write an Eternal Wisdom. This is the dawn of a new day but first for completness sake lets take a look back at the lastest events. Next time out in Eternal Wisdom 11 we will review the impact that the 20th May announcement has on the classic environment
6 events have fired since the last installment of the Eternal Wisdom meaning 48 decks have made Top 8 - Lets take a look at what is winning! I present 16 different decklists and a complete run down of all the decks that have placed in the money! We finish with a 3 month review of the meta as we close the book on Necropotence's domination.
COMBO (2 x Ad Nauseam Storm, 12 NecroSpike (Including 3 Out-Right Wins), 1 x Flash, 2 Elf Comb, 1 Dredge, 1 Demigod Intuition)
The ever powerful Necrospike deck has made 12 top 8's! which equates to over 25% of the available Top 8. The deck not only had a good win ratio but (as serveral examples in this article) was also having a warping effect on the enviroment. I have covered this deck in detail in previous installments and now it has been quashed by the restriction hammer I dont want to dwell to much on the black powerhouse, however, I would like to take a look at the recent list played by Prolepsis9 - The sideboard enabled him to switch to a Team America Deck post board to navigate any hate or simple to keep the opponents guessing on their feet. Interestingly Team America produced 5 Top8's in its own right (see below).
The Ad Nauseam Storm Deck is very similar to the Necrospike deck, but has long been in the shadows of the black skull. Ad Nauseam runs alot of mana ramping spells, the Tendrils of Agony storm kill and sometimes transformational sideboard into Tombstalker beatdown. Like the Necro Spike deck this deck hopes to draw lots of cards in one definitive turn, but rather than rely on the Skull this deck is powered by the Name Sake Ad Nauseam - The low average Casting cost of the deck is ideally suited to this deck drawing engine. And there are some interesting plays to be had with Lion's Eye Diamond and Mystical Tutor or Demonic Tutor. This deck often has to go all on in and commit to a game winning turn, it has an advanatge over necrospike in that it normally wins on the Turn it "goes off" however it can not afford to run Force of Will (the 5 Casting Cost is far to dangerous when resolving Ad Nauseam and additonally the deck is light on blue cards to pitch). Likewise Daze is not an option for a deck that has to run so few "islands". Therefore to protect the combo the deck has to be proactive and rely on discard effects in the form of Duress and /or Thoughtseize. Pact of Negation from the Sideboard is a great option for this deck, the Casting Cost means it is "Free" to Ad Nauseam up and the win now or never nature of the deck means the downside of Pact Blue is hardly relevant. Although the loss of three copies is a blow to the deck I strongly believe those three cards are readily replaced and that this deck is set to become the combo deck to beat. In fact I would not be surprised to see numerous Top8's for this deck this month as the competition overcompenstates and starts to remove anti-combo cards from main deck and sideboards. This is a deck to watch for sure!
I agonized of how to classify this deck ultimately I settled for the combo category but feel free to disupte this in the comments below. Players of Extended or Standard will be all to familiar with the 5/4 hasted flier from Shadowmoor, but unless I am mistaken this is the first time the Spirit Avatar that is Demigod of Revenge has flown into the Top 8. The card is impressively costed but it is the next free lines of rules text which really make the card relevant in this deck. The reanimate your buddies clause works wonderfully with the powerful blue Tempest rare (Inuitition). In addition to summoning the spirits this deck also runs the undercosted (well at BB and 6 delve) Tombstalker which has long become an established beast of the classic format. The deck plans to disrupt the opponent via a discard plan, before flying through the skies with some of the biggest creatures in the event. If this A Plan fails then the transformational sideboard can come to the rescue. Helmline is essentially a two card combo of Helm of Obedience and Leyline of the Void. When the Helm is activated for x = 1 or more with a black leyline in play the opponents library is removed from the game resulting in a game win for the helmline player on the opponents draw phase. The fact that the leyline can be played from hand on turn 0 allows this deck to regularly become a 1 card 5 mana combo.
nofxdarkside2 is a LEDless Dredge specialist and racked up a further Top 8 positions this time out, it is interesting at least in my mind that Dredge does not seem to be played or maybe not delivering for other players. Yet Nofxdarkside2 manages to rise to the Top. I dont think this deck needs any introduction as it is a main stream deck in Legacy, Vintage and has been around Classic since the release of Futuresight.
One player took restricted Flash to the Top 8 - With the current wording of Flash you can put the Hulk into play refuse to pay the required 2 Green and 3 Colourless Mana and have the Hulk head to the Graveyard from Play - hence triggering the search your library clause. Historically classic Flash has pulled Disciple of the vaults and artifact creatures which die to dome your opponent from the Mirrodin Commons ability. However, Tempest introduce Heart Sliver to the Card Pool and enables the classic player to pull of a kill that is seen in some Vintage Flash decks. When the Hulk ability resolves you find 4 Virulent Sliver and the Heart Sliver and swing for a Posion-induced death of your opponent. The Sliver Kill requires far few cards than the previous artifact- disciple kill and allows for more design space which Java fills with my tutors, counters, Orims Chant and Cunninwish. The Orim's Chant can disrupt the Necropotence of Ad Nasuem Combo decks or protect the decks own deadly combo. The cunning wish main deck enables the recovery of Flash if removed from game, or can pull the Reclaim in the sideboard to recover the lone flash from the graveyard if necessary, the presence of the Vampiric Tutor in the Sideboard means that the Cunning Wish, for the cost of 2 life can effectively put a game winning card on the top of the library read for the next turn. Is this evidence that even restricted the Necro deck is not truely dead? I mean afterall all but the die-hard Ambitious few thought flash was dead right??- is there still room for innovation of restricted Flash and a recover of Necro in its post-resricted state?
And finally rounding up the combo decks is the ELF-combo. This deck has several powerful combo engines, but if push comes to shove this deck can win very effectively via Elf beatdown. Elf combo took 2 players into the money. This decks origins were in the extended format but the port to classic gains greatly in having access to skullclamp and earthcraft. NB The Earthcraft generates potentially infinite 1/1's with a Squirrel Nest in play and these tokens can be sacrificed in turn by placing a Skullclamp on them to net card advantage or simply swung sideways the next turn for a damage step win!
CONTROL (1 x Rogue BUW Control, 1 Dreadstill, 2 UB Tog Control, 1 GAT, 5 Team America)
As mentioned above Team America has posted 5 Top 8 slots this time around, the traditional creature base of Tarmo and Stalker have been enhanced with the addition of the powerful Alara of Reborn uncommon - Lorescale Coatl. This seems to be the best classic card of the set so if you have any kind of interest in playing this format and dont own a playset be sure to pick up 4 at www.mtgotraders.com The Team America deck disupts with discards, and a suite of counterspells hoping to land one or two big or growing threats and ride them to victory. The plan is simple and effective with any of the creatures getting the job done if allowed to enter and remain in the Battlefield!
UB Tog decks have been gaining ground lately and it has been alongtime since Meloku made an appearance in competitive classic. Well done eggraid.
A deck to cacth the eye was the UWB Rogue deck played by Mowbli_Cat - I really dont know what to make of this deck - Lets discuss in the comments below!
AGGRO / CONTROL (8 Merfolk (Including 2 Out-Right Wins), 1 Bant Aggro, 1 UW Fish)
The version of Bant aggro making the Top 8 was somewhat techy. Our clan had some really interesting pre-event discussions about upping the win percentages against Merfolk and Necropotence (both of which had been the Top two decks to beat in the format). Kaxon's decklist settled on running Disrupting Shoal with enough 3cc cards making a pitch to counter that annoying Turn 1 necro a realistic possibility, coupled with the ever present Force of Will the plan was to try and hinder the nuts start the skull deck was so famous for. The other innovation came in the form of Cold-Eyed Selkie.
Kerrick piloted UW Fish. This deck is similar to the Merfolk deck in some respects with a core of Standstill, Force of Will, Daze, Vial, Man-lands. But rather than running out the Merfolk army prefers to bring aggresively costed Serra Avenger, and Jotun Grunt to the part alongside the control and Alara "Reborn" Meddling Mage. I think I prefer Bazzar of Baghdads version of this deck from a few months back which bought creatures with more disruptive utilites to the battlefield but still an interesting concept.
Merfolk has been one of the only decks to have a consistent game against the Skull - Testomony to this is the fact that 3 Merfolk decks joined the 3 Necro decks in the last Daily Event of the Skulls-era. Can the deck continue to put in the numbers in the changing/slower envrionment - time will tell. The main game plan is obviously to drop Merfolk and Counter relevant threats until the Mefolk whittle the opponent to zero life. The ability to drop a turn 1 Aether Vial and following up with Standstill is a potent threat. The Daze can be useful even into the mid game thanks to the mana denial cards of Wasteland and Stifle (a useful response to the triggered ability of the Onslaught Rare Lands such as Polluted Detla. The Merfolk deck loves going up against Islands as the Lord not only pumps his band of followers, but it also grants islandwalk to the core of the blue army.
AGGRO (2 Goblins, 1 Naya Zoo, )
If turning creatures sideways is your thing then this is the section for you. A Naya Zoo variants made 1 Top 8 with the fast critters getting a compliment of burn. The Burning-Tree Shaman is one of my all time favourite cards and is sadly underplayed in this format. He can turn cards like Sensei's Top and other Mishra's Factories into Selfharming Pingers!
Goblins added to the sucess of last time out by adding a further two Top8's to its name.
Pox and Burn! (5 Pox, 1 Burn (Including 1 Out-Right Win)
Two of the lower budget decks Pox and Burn scored several Top 8's each, I have covered both decks in detail in previous episodes of Eternal Wisdom, so I will simple list the latest versions of both these deck types.
This deck is attemping to gain on the strength of Merfolk and Necrospike. The pox effects take the game to the folk whilst the discard and pithing needle packages help to fight the threat of the powerful Necrospike deck. When Master's Edition 1 was first released 18 months ago (approx) Pox was experimented with alongside its small sister Smallpox, but this deck has been off the radar for a longtime. The Crucibe of Worlds enables the pilot to break the syngery of the Pox effects by bringing back sacraficed lands, but it can also recur Wasteland to demolish any greedy manabases relying too heavily on non-basic lands. The pox effects also help fill the graveyard to power Tombstalkers early arrival. The deck is very fun to play and considerations of when best to play a pox effect are based on the knowledge gained from peaking at your opponents hand via a duress effect, from the state of the board and from knowledge of the matchup. The deck has to carefully manage its resources and there are times when holding lands is worthwhile. The threats in this deck are limited but powerful with many games ending with Mishra's Factory or Tombstalker beatdown. ITo be honest I have not been impressed with the inclusion of 2 Epochrasite in this deck, though they seem to be present in many Pox decklists I just dont ever find them that useful. The idea is to get the 1/1 in play fire of a pox effect and control the game until he comes back as a 4/4 threat later down the line. I just find them too situational and would rather fill the slots with the additional Pithing Needle main deck. This may seem like an odd call and I hope it sparks debate in the comments below but right now Pithing Needle does so much in the field that I am never upset to see them.
Burn not only made Top8 but it took down the event for the outright win. So many times this deck has been written off and everytime it has bounced back. Recently gaining Hellspark Elemental. The maths to stay alive look even more terrifying with two untapped mountains in play. Two lightning bolts to your head and a fireblast - Anyone???
Summary
Combining the Data from the last three months we see Necrospike has achieved the most Top8s with 38, mefolk is second with 18 and suprisingly Pox takes third place. Join me next time when I look at the impact of the restrictions on the environment.

for the last inovation possible in the history of magic with necro? For shame! lol
On the UWb good stuff deck, I fail to see how reliable 8 bears as a win condition really holds out now in the new format with a lot more aggro decks. I can imagine that by adding Trinket Mage and Phyrexian Dreadnaught, the speed and power of that deck can be increased by double.
The enclopedia of classic is in Eternal wisdom. Good job mate, as usual, your is an awesome source of information. Did you observe that the Rock deck isnt so much ran in the current meta ? this is strange, because qasali pridemage, putrid imp and pulse are good stuff for it anyway ... and gift rock could be around too ;)
Please guys add a way to save deck lists as .txt format for testing in MTGO as some other magic sites do.
Thanks
If there is going to be any development in that direction then what about also adding either a way to price the deck from MTGOTraders and/or buying the deck from them.
I appreciate that a calculated cost would go out of date very quickly however I do find myself pricing these things up by hand each time.
I've been pushing to do this for a very long time (Since before I came on board here) and this is something I think every one would love to see.
hey guys. copy the deck box and then paste it in to note pad and delete all the arbitrary stuff such as creatures and what not. the only thing you chould leave that isnt a number or a card name is the word side board. it should look something like this.
4 Chrome Mox
2 Manamorphose
1 Mana Crypt
4 Tinder Wall
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Dark Ritual
1 Badlands
4 Lotus Petal
4 Goblin Charbelcher
1 Stomping Ground
4 Elvish Spirit Guide
4 Burning Wish
4 Seething Song
3 Empty the Warrens
4 Street Wraith
4 Lion's Eye Diamond
4 Desperate Ritual
4 Rite of Flame
Sideboard
1 Diminishing Returns
1 Pyroclasm
4 Xantid Swarm
1 Shattering Spree
1 Thoughtseize
1 Infernal Tutor
1 Tendrils of Agony
1 Empty the Warrens
1 Hull Breach
3 Pyroblast
once it looks like that save it to your desk top and then load it using local text decks in the deck editor. once you have it saved to your desk top you can go to mtgo traders and under the search function you can first load the deck in question and then search for it and it will have a price for buying the whole deck. hope this helps.
