The Top 10 Signs that you might be a little too obsessed with Magic and Magic Online.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
10. You've playtested your own homemade magic cards
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
9. You can list the names of Planeswalkers easier than you can list the names of your extended family members.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
8. You know Magic's storylines better than you know World History.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. You think the debate over the definition of "casual" magic is more likely to evoke a hostile response than talking about religion, abortion, or politics.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. You have pets named after magic characters (fish don't count)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. You spend more time thinking about Magic than you do thinking about the opposite sex.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. You've told yourself "just one more draft" at 2 AM in the morning on a weeknight when you have to go to work or school the next morning.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. You have tried to play Magic Online while holding a baby.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. You have thought about naming your children after Planeswalkers
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. In a fit of rage and frustration, you've uninstalled Magic Online only to reinstall it a couple of hours later.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
When I was in junior high school I was on the chess team. I spent huge amounts of time trying to be the best chess player I could be. Games are a family tradition and I was trying to live up to it as best I could. My dad was even the coach of our school's chess team. During one match against another school, I lost a very close game and I simply snapped. I walked out of the school without telling anyone I was leaving and just starting walking. My dad found me a couple of hours later outside of the school. I was so frustrated and disappointed in my behavior that I just had to get away from it all, and blow off some steam. I realized after that day that I needed to give chess up forever. I was too emotionally involved in the game. Every game I lost seemed like a knock-out blow to my self-worth.
Most of us assign value to what we do and who we are. I'm a good father. I'm smart. I'm good at games. I care about others. Those kind of statements define who we are and more importantly who we want to be. With chess, I associated winning with being smart and being good at games. Therefore when I lost, I felt the opposite must be true about me.
There is no chance or random factor in chess. If I lose a game of chess there is no obstacle or outside factor that my ego can hide behind. I can either face the fact that my opponent is better than me, or challenge him again and again until I can win back my self esteem.
That was my line of thinking back in junior high and that is why I had to give up chess.
I moved on to other games and even though I love strategy games, I stayed away from games that had little to no luck involved in them. After my experience in junior high, I wanted games to be fun again. I know there are a million definitions of fun, but here is mine. A fun game is a game in which your pride, ego, intelligence, or self-worth is not on line. A fun game is a game that challenges your mind and forces you to think in new and interesting ways, but it does not define you as a good or bad person.
In short, I don't want my games to be too competitive. I don't want to do "anything" for a win. I don't want the stakes to be too high so that I can't afford to lose. My self worth is not determined by how well I play Magic, no matter how many times my opponents tell me differently.
Sure, sometimes I catch myself slipping back into my super competitive mode, and it hurts. I want this game to be a fun little hobby or a mental challenge to keep my brain sharp and alert. I don't want it to become an obsession that diverts my attention from the things that matter the most to me. I'm married now and have a wonderful baby girl. I know twenty-five years from now I won't say to myself "I wish I had more time to play Magic Online." But it's possible that I may regret not spending enough time with my daughter.
There are many people that enjoy hobbies at a healthy level. I think many of us play magic online in the same way that other people spend time on facebook or watch sports. It's perfectly normal and perfectly healthy. However sometimes we can get a bit carried away and enter the area of an obsession. I am always monitoring myself to make sure that I keep my hobby in check. It doesn't always work. Sometimes I stay up a bit too late playing Magic or end up playing 3 or 4 nights in a row. My family comes first in my book, but with most hobbies, it's easy to get carried away.
My family is filled with game players. Even when she was in her 90s, I was rarely able to beat my grandmother at scrabble. Her mind was sharp until her dying day, and I believe her mind stayed sharp because she was always using it by playing games. Games and hobbies such as Magic are a very good thing in moderation, and a very destructive thing in excess.
If you've identified with a piece of my story or my top ten list, please take a break from Magic every now and then.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, on to the actual strategy part of my article. I've been looking at the latest Zendikar Block tournament results in order to get a feel for what happened after the release of Worldwake. The answer to that question is "not a whole lot." Vampires and White/Blue control were the two dominant decks before Worldwake and they are the two dominant decks after Worldwake.

Here are the deck counts from the decklists that I obtained.

I'm going to keep my comments to a minimum here as I think the comparison between decklists is useful with or without my cursory observations. Basically the core creature set of the Vampire decks is unchanged with Worldwake but the removal and discard parts of the deck have been shaken up a bit. Dread Statuary and Tectonic Edge have also added a bit to the Vampire deck's playbook however its hard to add too many of those cards because they are more or less dead weight in the mirror match.

It's no surprise that Jace, Treasure Hunt and Celestial Collonade make strong appearances in post worldwake White Blue control decks. What may be surprising is that so White/Blue decks are willing to play up to 12 "enters the battlefield tapped" lands.

Both White/Blue and Vampire decks have gotten a bit slower. There are no more 1 drop vampires and more tapped lands for White Blue. So to capitalize on this fact, and the presence of a cheap burn spell that can kill a Nighthawk, Red burn decks have also started to appear on the scene. Although there are still quite a few differences between the decks.

Well, anyway, Thank you for reading, and I wish you all well in your future games

Heya Marcus great article! I like the advice you give. Magic can indeed become larger than it should be. I know I get angry and competitive playing it at times and then other times wonder at how others can take it so seriously. I used to be that way with Chess until Magic came along. Well not quite. I'd stopped reading the grandmasters, and analyzing infinite games to extract tactical gems or end game scenarios in my mid 20s but I was fairly immersed in chess for a very long time. Now I play sometimes in the summer with the guys in the park but I don't take it too seriously. Magic has that honor now. Strangely I am the only real gamer in my family. My Dad brought us up to be game players but he doesn't really get into that himself. My sister is too busy raising her children to think about games much, and well my mom was never really interested in games. She felt they were beneath us. Even so I enjoyed reading about how Magic affects you and your life.
Onto Zen Block...wow at all the U/W and Vamps...only one burn deck? Sounds like a metagame emerges post wwk. I never really find blocks very interesting to analyze but I'm used to hearing about a wider spectrum of deck types. The ETBT lands are all interesting in their ways, giving back something for the tempi lost in their play. I think it might be that every deck wants to play ETBT lands so they all balance out in the end. Dunno, as I said Block isn't my usual cuppa, but it seems like the case. With that said...looks like Collonade keeps going down in price (cf Hammy's article) despite this.
Thank you for your response,
It's good to know I'm not the only one with the chess background and the ability to go overboard when it comes to games and competition.
Well, I did playtest my homemade Magic cards and I did play Magic while holding a sleeping baby. I think I'm also doing your point 5 (hey I'm married!). But to me Magic is a hobby and I like to keep it like that.
Now a few words about ZEN Block: Last year these days we were playing ALA Block and the best decks were Naya, Dark Naya, Mono White and to some degree Bant and 4 color Control. Today in ZEN Block we have WU Control, Vampires, Valakut, Kor, Mono Red and Mono Green. And these are the early days of the format; I'm sure we will see many more different decks in the coming days. So I can easily say that after two sets ZEN Block is a more successful format than ALA Block in terms of variety and diversity of its Tier-1 decks.
But to be honest, I can't stop myself from thinking about Rise of the Eldrazi after seeing that monster.
Great article by the way :).

Thanks for your comments.
Just because you're married, doesn't mean you stop thinking about the opposite sex. I'm married too, and I think about my wife quite a bit.
My name, My name was in there! To happy, going into mental joy overdrive. Recognition, fame, women, wealth, mwohahaha!
Oh, and explore and beastial menace are horrible. Vines is THE card for a mono green deck!
You did a TON of work and it is all really useful information; however, I feel like all the hard leg work was let down by the charts. I found them really hard to read (I did anyways because the info is great) but I am sure some people though, "pfft riiight". I would love a better way to show the hard work you put into this. Just some constructive criticism and I really appreciate the number crunching! Hazzaaa
What specifically is wrong with the charts? Which charts are hard to read? Are the colors too glaring, or is it difficult to read due to the organization of the data?
I am constantly tweaking and making improvements to my graphs, and I love to get constructive criticism when it's something I can use.
What I would suggest is ordering the decks in the charts better. Quite often the 1st/3rd decks are about the same as are the 2nd/4th and that makes it hard as you scan left to right. I keep jumping from the 3rd back to the 1st and the 4th to the 2nd to make sure they really are the same.
Keeping similar decks next to each other would help, I think. I like the info though.... good work.
I have played MTGO many times while holding a fussy baby in the middle of the night. Sometimes they just want to be held, and it is a great excuse to get in that midnight draft.
Trying to play magic while holding a fussy baby is one of the craziest things I've ever attempted.
Besides the fact that is it hard to make strategic decisions when someone is screaming at you at the top of their lungs, you also have to worry about your little bundle of joy needing a diaper change, or a bottle, or spitting up on the keyboard. There are just too many nightmare situations when you mix Magic and babies.
Count me in on baby holding while playing. 3 kids now...
yea, i tried to do the baby holding while drafting, end result, angry wife.
I've done the baby holding thing. I had a sweet set up to where i could mtgo and feed my son at the same time.
yeah, I played MTG for the first time in around 5 years while up with a baby one night. It was "winter break" and I didn't have to work the next day and didn't feel like watching tv and there was the laptop. Now I find myself sneaking time there constantly - been doing better this week though.
One of the top 10 needs to get the boot to make room for something along the lines of: "Your eating only Ramen because you spent half your monthly salary on duals, FoW, etc."
I have to agree. I googled about zendikar block drafting and stumbled upon your page. Fun article- but you completely lost me with your charts. I see familiar names of cards I've seen- but I have no idea what the abbreviations are and what the charts are saying. If this blog is meant for Magic players who have been playing forever and understand this language- I guess it's fine.
