I didn't play any KTK limited, besides 3 Mocs sealeds because they were free so when I started playing these I didn't know many cards from both sets. I still managed to do well overall. This one is from the last week of releases so by then I already knew most cards and I think showing one of these is better for you readers.

The pool:

The Abzan fixing is fantastic and I can certainly build a solid Abzan deck but red has several good cards: Pyrotechnics, Burn Away, Bring Low, Bathe in Dragonfire and Alesha. However I only have Rugged Highlands and Map the Wastes to fix red. It's not ideal but I think not splashing Pyrotechnics is a mistake because the card is insane. Here's the deck I submitted:

At the right I left all the cards that could be included but didn't end up making the cut. Some were obviously easier to cut than others. I think Burn Away is the second best red card here and I decided to include that as well but I left the rest in the sideboard because I didn't want to have that many red cards and maybe force me to play a second Mountain. Hooded Assassin and Ainok Bond-Kin where the last 2 cuts and I'm not sure about those. I'd like to know what people think about this. Now on to the games!

M1G1:

He started with Typhoid Rats and I played Sultai Emissary. He dashed Goblin Heelcutter and I morphed Abzan Guide. He missed his land drop and passed. I attacked with Emissary which he blocked with Rats. They traded and with Emissary's trigger on the stack he played Crackling Doom to kill my morph. I manifested Krumar Bond-Kin and played Wildcall for 3 manifesting a land. He dashed his goblin again still with only 3 lands and I flipped Krumar to attack him down to 10 and he conceded on his turn.

M1G2:

I had a lot of spells and not many creatures in hand so after he already had Rats and Hooded Assassin in play I decided to play Debilitating Injury on the Rats because I had no other play on that turn. On his next turn he played Goblin Heelcutter so I wasn't happy about not having Injury anymore. I played Sandsteppe Outcast and he attacked me down to 14 and played Bitter Revelation dumping another Revelation and Dutiful Return in the graveyard and didn't attack. I attacked with the token and played Timely Hordemate without returning anything. He didn't play anything and just passed. I used Burn Away to deal with his Goblin and on my turn attacked with the token and my 3/2 which he traded for his 2/3. I morphed Abzan Guide and passed. He wiped the board with Crux of Fate and I morphed another Guide. He played another Rats and I played Noxious Dragon. He had the perfect answer: Suspension Field and passed again. I made a risky play by attacking and using Feat of Resistance to save my creature. I also unmorphed it gaining some life. On his turn he killed my guy with Smite the Monstrous. I played Sultai Emissary and he played Alabaster Kirin. I drew a land and passed. He attacked and played Bellowing Saddlebrute. I drew Map the Wastes and passed. He attacked with both and I blocked with Emissary manifesting a Swamp. I played Map the Wastes, attacked for 3 and passed. He attacked and I killed his 4/5 with Reach of Shadows. After combat he played Kin-Tree Invocation to make a 3/3. I played Savage Punch on his flier and attacked for 3. He played another Rats and attacked. I drew Rite of the Serpent and since my other card was Sandblast and Rats could trade for any of my creatures I opted to use Rite on Rats and attack. On his following turn he played Gurmag Angler so now I had to stay on defense. He dashed Goblin Heelcutter and I killed his Angler going to 3 life. I drew Armament Corps so I knew I was dead but I still played it out in case he feared something. He went for the win so I conceded.

M1G3:

I played Ainok Bond-Kin on turn 2 but he had Rats. I attacked, he traded and I morphed Abzan Guide. He missed his third land and I played Map the Wastes and attacked. He missed land again and I attacked and unmorphed. He drew a land and played Suspension Field. I had no creatures to play so I passed and he found the forth land to play Bitter Revelation. I had no play again and he played Gurmag Angler which I killed with Burn Away. I played Noxious Dragon but he had Smite the Monstrous and Timely Hordemate died to Crackling Doom. I played Armament Corps as a 6/6 and he played Lightform. I attacked and he didn't block but the replay bug shows that I win right there because my creature has 1000 counters instead of 2. He was at 6 and when he attacked with his creature I played Sandblast. He played another creature but I killed it as well and won.

M2G1:

He played Whisperer of the Wilds and I took care of it with Debilitating Injury. I morphed Krumar Bond-Kin and he played Alabaster Kirin. I played Map making my morph a 3/3 and attacked. He attacked as well and played Mardu Heart-Piercer. I attacked and he didn't block. After that I played both Mardu Woe-Reaper and Ainok Bond-Kin. He played Soulfire Grand Master and attacked with the flier. I attacked with everything and he put both his 2/3s in front of my 2/1s. I used Pyrotechnics to kill all his creatures but in the replay they don't die. I won this game but I don't remember how.

M2G2:

I had only 3 lands, 2 morphs, a 4 drop and a 6 drop so I opted to play Wildcall for 0 on turn 2. It was Ainok Bond-Kin and he played his own morph blocking my manifest. His morph was War Behemoth and I morphed Krumar Bond-Kin. I attacked for 2 and morphed Abzan Guide. He played Alabaster Kirin and I drew a Plains and attacked with both. He blocked Krumar and I unmorphed it. He played Abzan Skycaptain and passed. I attacked with both and he took the damage. After combat I played Timely Hordemate returning Ainok Bond-Kin. He played another Abzan Skycaptain and passed. I used Savage Punch on one but I should have made it fight my morph because I would have won right away. In the end it didn't matter because he was at 2 and I won the following turn anyway.

M3G1:

He started with Soul Summons and I played Sandsteppe Outcast making a token. He attacked and I blocked and it was a Valorous Stance. He played a fetch and that allowed him to have a turn 3 Tasigur. I played Mardu Woe-Reaper and attacked for 1. He played Sultai Flayer and I killed his Tasigur with Reach of Shadows. He had Sultai Emissary and attacked. I played Armament Corps to try to make a 3/3 flier but he had Douse in Gloom. He passed the turn and I played Noxious Dragon. I attacked with both my 4/4s and he put both his creatures on my ground guy. I killed his 3/4 and played Formless Nurturing. He was still playing nothing and I attacked with my Dragon and 3/3. He put Emissary in front of the 3/3 and took 4. On my following turn I attacked with everything and he put his manifest in front of my 2/1 and used Sandblast to kill the Dragon and I killed his manifest with the Dragon's ability. He played Hooting Mandrills but I used Burn Away to kill it and attacked him down to 11. He had Debilitating Injury for my 2/1 and I attacked again. He played Ivorytusk Fortress and I morphed Abzan Guide. He played Elite Scaleguard and passed. I morphed Krumar Bond-Kin and passed. He played Citadel Siege and put counters on his 5/7. He attacked with both but I used Sandblast to kill his Scaleguard. I attacked with everything and he blocked the morph that was Abzan Guide so I unmorphed the other and won with exactly lethal damage.

M3G2:

He started with Warden of the First Tree which was bale to 12 before I stabilized. My turn 2 Whisperer of the Wilds was killed by Douse in Gloom and my morph was dealt with by Debilitating Injury. Formless Nurturing gave me a 3/3 that stopped his guy and he was screw for a while. The replay is messed up once again by Armament Corps but I ended up winning the game thanks to Mastery of the Unseen.

M4G1:

I had several white cards in hand but no white mana. We both had Whisperer of the Wilds and I opted to kill his Dragon Bell Monk with Injury. He played Daghatar the Adamant and I draw Map which allowed me to get Plains. He played Feral Krushok but had no fifth land. I used Rite of the Serpent to kill Daghatar but he drew a land and played Ojutai, Soul of Winter. I played some creatures and I was able to trade with his 5/4 but I still had no solution to his Dragon. When he played Dromoka, the Eternal I conceded.

M4G2:

I had a turn 2 Ainok Bond-Kin and on turn 3 put a counter on it and played Mardu Woe-Reaper. On my following turn I attacked with both but he had Kill Shot for my 3/2 and I played Formless Nurturing. He played Daghatar which I killed with Burn Away and he was stuck on 4 lands and didn't play any more spells for the rest of the game.

M4G3:

This was one of the weirdest games I've played. I kept two lands and played Sultai Emissary and Mardu Woe-Reaper missing my second land for many turns. On the other hand he didn't play anything until turn 6 when he played Gurmag Angler exiling a fetch. I drew my third land finally and I attacked killing his Angler with Sandblast. And for the rest of the game he didn't play any other spell and I won with those two creatures and a morph.

It was great to 4-0 and I really liked the deck. I think the first two matches were interesting but the last two not so much. The base of the deck is easy to build but there are so decisions to be made like how many red cards should be splashed and which cards to cut. I hope you enjoyed this.

I don't think you needed to by MarcosPMA at Tue, 02/24/2015 - 20:04

I don't think you needed to splash red. Your removal suite is already good enough without red, but if you want to play a slower game then splashing red is fine in the abstract. I would not have played Mardu Woe-Reaper at all. The odds of you having Plains + Woe-Reaper on turn 1 are very low and it's a very bad topdeck in the late game (which if you have tons of removal ideally means you're more likely to get to the late game).

I would have gone -1 Mardu Woe-Reaper, -1 Whisperer of the Wilds, +1 Forest, +1 Ainok Bond-Kin. With so much removal I want to consistently hit my land drops, and that's something 18 lands can do. Possibly -1 Burn Away, +1 Tusked Colossodon as a win condition if I wanted to cut on the red splash.

Mardu Woe-Reaper has the by TugaChampion at Tue, 02/24/2015 - 20:43

Mardu Woe-Reaper has the upside of exiling some creatures and gaining some life but I think you're right, Ainok Bond-Kin would have been better. I know I'm playing 17 lands but I have Whisperer and Map so it's 19 mana sources. I really wanted Map because it could fetch red and Whisperer while it obviously can be killed, can sometimes provide very explosive draws.

And about the red splash it's not that the deck needs it but Pyrotechnics is really too good to not play. If I didn't have the RG land I guess I wouldn't play it but with this pool I really think I have to play it. And Burn Away kills almost anything and in Fate Reforged, almost every rare is a bomb and I only had Reach of Shadows and Rite as hard removal.

To be honest I built the deck with the 2nd Ainok Bond-Kin and without Burn Away and after submitting I thought for a while and decided to put Burn Away and I took out Ainok. In the hurry of doing so fearing that it could be just 1 or 2 players left to submit and they submitted in the meantime, I took out Ainok instead of Woe-Reaper.

Anyway, thanks for your comment.
