Welcome to another Hour of Devastation draft. The Pro Tour has been and gone, and the draft format looked great. I am enjoying it much more than triple Amonkhet myself, and I highly recommended trying it out if you haven't already! Also, mono-red was great in Standard, and that has got to be the best thing I've heard about Standard in a couple of years.

Anyway, let's get into the draft.

THE DRAFT

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

This wasn't a very hard pick. Pride Sovereign is a very good Magic card, and is easily the most powerful card in the pack. Some other good cards here are Vizier of the True and Dauntless Aven.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Rhonas's Stalwart, Unquenchable Thirst and Sifter Wurm are the best cards in this pack. I haven't really had a chance to play with Sifter Wurm, so I decided to take it here.

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Another Sifter Wurm, but I'm hesitant to take two seven-drops this early. We have another Unquenchable Thirst and another Dauntless Aven, and this time I settle for the blue card.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Aerial Guide and Rampaging Hippo are the cards I'm the most interested in here. I've found Aerial Guide to be very good, so took it.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

At this point I'm thinking I might be blue/green ramp, so I was considering Manalith. However, you can often get these late. Instead I decided to take Bitterbow Sharpshooters.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

This is a pretty weak pack. Beneath the Sands can help me splash the white mana for Pride Sovereign should I need it, so I took it.

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Manalith or Rampaging Hippo are my choices here, and again I'm pretty sure I'll get another chance at a Manalith, so I took the Hippo.

  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

And then added a second one.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

I don't like this card very much, but it is the colours I have picked so far.

  Pack 1 pick 10:

  My Pick:

I will be splashing white for Pride Sovereign and, apart from being in green, I'm not committed to blue yet. There is a chance this ends up in a green/white deck if I go there.

  Pack 1 pick 11:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 13:

  My Pick:

The plan worked, and I get a let Manalith

  Pack 1 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

There are some good to okay cards in this pack, but nothing great except for Torment of Venom. I had picked up some (admittedly ordinary) black cards late in pack one, so I could always pivot into black if black seems open. Vizier of the True and Dauntless Aven were also considered.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

I have Unquenchable Thirst, so picking up a Desert of the Mindful to go with it seems good.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Oasis Ritualist is a pretty easy pick. Not only does it ramp me into my bigger spells, of which I already had a few, but it provides fixing for Pride Sovereign.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Again another easy pick. I'm starting to consider being green/black, as these are two premium black removal spells.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

I took a combat trick here, but I wonder if Survivor's Encampment would have been the better pick.

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

This is a late Ifnir Deadlands and really makes me think black is the place to be. I want more deserts now, and wish I had have taken the one in the last pack.

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Another Gift of Strength, as there was nothing else here.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Pretty happy to see Liliana's Defeat this late. It is premium removal against black decks.

  Pack 2 pick 10:

  My Pick:

Khenra Eternal is a fine aggressive beater. My deck isn't looking like it really wants to do that, but a two-drop is fine.

  Pack 2 pick 11:

  My Pick:

Mediocre, but better than nothing.

  Pack 2 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Angler Drake is so good, I took it as I wondered if I could pivot back into blue. I wasn't missing out on a lot here anyway by taking it.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Another fine two-drop in Initiate's Companion. I also considered Festering Mummy and Soulstinger.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

My eyes lit up when I saw Hapatra, Vizier of Poisons in this pack and I snap picked it.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

A bit more ramp is always good.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

I'm pretty heavy already on the high cost creatures, but at least they all cycle.

  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

If I hadn't have opened Hapatra, I probably would have taken another Naga Vitalist here. Instead, Defiant Greatmaw works much better with it.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Gift of Paradise not only fixes my mana, but ramps me as well. Easy choice.

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Again, more synergy with Hapatra.

  Pack 3 pick 10:

  My Pick:

I like Festering Mummy. It's such an annoying card to play against. Plus, it has synergy with Hapatra as well.

  Pack 3 pick 11:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 15:

  My Pick:

THE DECK

The deck seems fine, though nothing special. I decided to get a little greedy and play both Angler Drake and Unquenchable Thirst; with Gift of Paradise, Manalith and Oasis Ritualist I'm hoping I have enough sources of blue to pull it off. It also lets me put the blue desert in, which gives me another use of Ifnir Deadlands.

THE MATCHES

Match 1

I mulligan a hand of six lands into a hand containing four lands and nothing costing below four mana. I keep anyway. My opponent is on black/green but doesn't make a play until turn four, which is an Accursed Horde. I kill it and my opponent follows up with a Horror of the Broken Lands and Shefet Monitor. Welp. Meanwhile I'm struggling, but eventually manage to land Sifter Wurm and gain six life. It's too little too late though, as my opponent attacks and casts Synchronized Strike for lethal.

Game two and my opponent starts with Rhonas's Last Stand on turn two, while I get colour screwed and only draw black mana. The game is over pretty soon after.

This wasn't a great start, but I know I had a bit of bad luck. Here's hoping I can turn that around in the next two.

Match 2

Once again I mulliganed to six. My only play in the first four turns was Naga Vitalist. On turn five, my Rampaging Hippo was countered with Censor, then my opponent untapped and took the only non-land card in my hand, Sifter Wurm, out with Doomfall. There was no coming back from this disaster.

Let me do a quick recap of game two: draw a hand of no land, mulligan to six; find six land, mulligan to five; get a hand of no land, mulligan to four; get a hand of four land, concede the match.

Match 3

To be honest, I tilted out completely here and dropped from the event.

CONCLUSION

Well. While I don't think my deck was actually all that good, my luck was beyond terrible. It might have been a slight by-product of the deck composition, but man I did not draw well.

What did you think of the deck? What picks would you have made? Despite feeling really bad at the end of this league, I will be back next week with another draft. See you then!

I stopped reading after P1P3. Why would you ever take a blue card over a Dauntless Aven in that situation? It pairs with the bomb rare you first picked and keeps you on color.
Also, Sifter Wurm is really bad outside a ramp deck, after taking Pride, I'd probably take the Stalwart and try to be aggressive.

Also, you took the Torment of by NVOtosReborn at Thu, 08/03/2017 - 14:31

Also, you took the Torment of Venom (over two good white cards that you should have taken had you stayed on track drafting GW in pack 1), and then take a mediocre card over Ammit Eternal that got passed to you. It was unfortunate what happened in the actual matches, especially round 2, but I think your deck would have been much better if you had a more cohesive pile of cards. Best of luck on the next one :)

Yeah, I felt really bad after this draft and didn't even want to post it. I know my picks weren't great, but I feel it is necessary to not just post the winning decks, but the bad ones too.
