If you read my article last week, you'll know I did terribly. 0-2 drop terribly. Didn't even win a game. The general consensus was that I had weak packs, which I agree with, but I think the format over all is a bit underpowered compared to what we have had recently. Still, this just means its more of a challenge trying to figure it out. After speaking with people whose opinions on Limited Magic I trust, I have formed the opinion that this is a format where you need to decide what deck you are drafting as quickly as possible. I'm going to try and put that into practice this week, so let's see how I go.

THE DRAFT

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

We open up with a pack with two good picks: Pious Interdiction and Vanquish the Weak. Fathom Fleet Cutthroat is also a decent pick. With two good black cards in the pack, I decided to take Pious Interdiction and pass them along, assuming they will be the next two cards picked.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Another good pack, with Legion's Judgment, Dark Nourishment and another Pious Interdiction in it. I took the second Interdiction in order to stay on colour; I also like it better than Legion's Judgment for being unconditional removal.

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

This pick probably should have been either Contract Killing or Thundering Spineback, I think. However, I took Adanto Vanguard for two reasons: it let me stay in white, and the incidental life gain from my first two picks work well with it.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

I was tempted to take Conqueror's Galleon here to see how it played out. However, Deathless Ancient is one of the pay off cards for the Vampire deck and I had just taken a vampire as well as other white cards. I decided to try and move in on Vampires and see how I go. My only concern is I have passed some good black cards so might get cut from that colour.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Run Aground is the best card in this pack. I took it in case my Vampire plan didn't pay off.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

It's certainly not a good sign that I am being passed no black now, so maybe Vampires won't work. Wind Strider is not a fantastic card, but it is evasive and if I end up blue/white, it is a flying deck, so it might find a home.

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

I considered taking Dire Fleet Interloper here but it has underperformed for me so far. Instead I stuck with blue and took Opt, a simple little card that can go in any blue deck.

  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Desperate Castaways was kind of a nothing pick, but I didn't want anything else here either.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

I have to admit, I'm surprised to get Fathom Fleet Cutthroat back. This has proven to be a decent enough card for me so far. Maybe it is a sign that black isn't being heavily drafted?

  Pack 1 pick 10:

  My Pick:

While Queen's Agent is a Vampire, I already had a six-drop and wasn't sure I wanted another one this early. Instead, I took Dire Fleet Hoarder; not the best of creatures, it's still a 2 power two-drop that can help me ramp into my bigger threats.

  Pack 1 pick 11:

  My Pick:

If I pick up enough Pirates I might play this, but otherwise I'm doubtful.

  Pack 1 pick 12:

  My Pick:

I'm very happy to get Skyblade of the Legion back. I'm going to try Vampires, depending on what pack two brings.

  Pack 1 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

This was a tough pick. On one hand, we have Contract Killing, a card for any black deck. On the other, we have two very good Vampire deck cards in Duskborne Skymarcher and Mavern Fein, Dusk Apostle. I'm really not sure what the correct pick was here, but I decided to play it safe and take the removal spell.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Having taken the safe route last pack, I decided to go the riskier route this pack. Despite this pack containing Skyblade of the Legion, Contract Killing, Paladin of the Bloodstained and Dark Nourishment, I took Treasure Map instead. I probably should have taken one of the others, but wanted to try out Treasure Map as it is a card I am quite curious about.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Alright, now I'm going to get serious about Vampires. Glorifier of Dusk is another one of the pay off cards for all the incidental life gain you get in the Vampires deck. I'm going to hope Bishop's Soldier comes back as well.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Skymarch Bloodletter is a Vampire, and it is also a three-drop, something I was aware I had precious little of at this point in time. This was an easy pick.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

I misclicked here; I meant to take Anointed Deacon

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

I passed one of these earlier, but now I'm happy to take a Duskborne Skymarcher

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Not one but two Vampires! I took Paladin of the Bloodstained over another Contract Killing to try and go for a critical mass of Vampires. Plus, I already had three removal spells so far.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Raptor Companion may make the cut if I am short on playables, but we will see.

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

This and the remaining picks are all kind of average and nothing important, so let's quickly go through them:

  Pack 2 pick 14:

  Pack 2 pick 15:

  Pack 3 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Queen's Commission instead of Pious Interdiction or Anointed Deacon was again to get the critical mass of Vampires to go along with Deathless Ancient

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

Bishop's Soldier was an easy pick here.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

This pick was a bit harder, with Bishop's Soldier, Skullduggery and Skymarch Bloodletter all reasonable additions to my deck. In the end I took Bishop's Soldier; the lifelink will be handy for Glorifier of Dusk and Adanto Vanguard.

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

Nothing here I really wanted, so I took Blight Keeper.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Legion Conquistador is a Vampire, but without any others it is a very poor card. Still, this does seem to be a format that is low on playables, so maybe it will make the cut?

  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

I took Legion's Judgment here over Queen's Bay Soldier as, despite being a Vampire, I already had much better two-drops.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

Because I was already heavy at the top end of my mana curve, and was still struggling with three-drops, I decided to take Deadeye Tormentor.

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

There are zero cards in this pack for me.

  Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

This is the last pick that matters, and it's another Vampire payoff card with Anointed Deacon.

THE DECK

This deck feels a lot stronger than last week's effort. I have two strong Vampire pay off cards with Deathless Ancient and Glorifier of Dusk, and twelve Vampire cards in total, two of which make more than one Vampire creature. I did struggle with playables, and ended up playing Prying Blade and Legion Conquistador to make up the numbers.

THE MATCHES

The deck took me to a 3-0 record (6-2 in games). My opponents were red/green dinosaurs (2-1), green/white (2-0 - this was a deck much like mine last week), and blue/black pirates (2-1) I didn't actually think the deck was quite that good, but Deathless Ancient and the combination of Anointed Deacon and lifelink won me quite a few games. Prying Blade on the cheap flyers was also good and caught me by surprise; there were a couple of games where I was casting five-drops on turn four, and I don't think I lost any of those. Likewise, the card advantage from Treasure Map was incredibly useful as well; Im glad I tried it out, as I thought it was quite good.

I'll certainly be trying to draft this way again next time; it worked here, and hopefully will continue to work.
