This article marks my 100th article for PureMTGO, and I am celebrating it with what I know best: a draft! Let's get straight into it, shall we!

THE DRAFT

  Pack 1 pick 1:

  My Pick:

First up, I have some decent cards to choose from, with the two stand outs being Pounce and Bishop of Rebirth. There is also Duskborne Skymarcher which is great in a Vampire deck, and Marauding Looter which is also great. However, I'm not looking to commit to those two archetypes just yet. I went with Bishop of Rebirth, as I feel it is the most powerful card here.

  Pack 1 pick 2:

  My Pick:

For me, this pick was between Siren Lookout and Fiery Cannonade. I really like evasive creatures in this format, and Siren Lookout is often a 2/3 flyer for just three mana. I took it, but Fiery Cannonade may have been the correct pick.

  Pack 1 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Skullduggery, Emissary of Sunrise and Sky Terror were the three cards I considered in this pack. The reason I took Emissary of Sunrise was that it was on colour for me; also, this card has been great for me so far in the matches I have played.

  Pack 1 pick 4:

  My Pick:

There are some interesting choices here, many of which would commit me to a deck. Queen's Commission and Anointed Deacon are both good in Vampires; Storm Sculptor and Vineshaper Mystic go in Merfolk, and Bonded Horncrest has been solid in red decks. I could have committed one way or the other here, but it was still unclear which deck was open, so I hedged and took Storm Sculptor, as it can go in any blue deck.

  Pack 1 pick 5:

  My Pick:

Whilst Pounce is probably the strongest card in this pack, I had been blown out a couple of times by Tempest Caller and wanted to try it out for myself.

  Pack 1 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Shaper Apprentice is a solid card in Merfolk, so I took it here and noted that it looked like I'm perhaps leaning that way (my last three picks having all been Merfolk). Storm Fleet Pyromancer is also a good card and might mean that red is open.

  Pack 1 pick 7:

  My Pick:

I'm happy to take a second Shaper Apprentice here. I've found two-drops to be very important so far, and evasive two-drops even more so.

  Pack 1 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Seeing Fathom Fleet Cutthroat and another Storm Fleet Pyromancer would make me happy if I was in those two colours, however I am very far from them. I'm going to be blue, most likely Merfolk (though I am not seeing many green Merfolk cards) and so I took Depths of Desire as a tempo spell.

  Pack 1 pick 9:

  My Pick:

Shipwreck Looter is another fine two-drop, especially in Pirates. I'm not going that road but I'll still take it.

  Pack 1 pick 10:

  My Pick:

Wind Strider is the only pick here.

  Pack 1 pick 11:

  My Pick:

I don't know why I took Colossal Dreadmaw over River Herald's Boon; seeing the Boon should have been a sign that green/blue Merfolk was open. Oh well. The remaining picks for pack one were:

  Pack 1 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 14:

  My Pick:

  Pack 1 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 1:

  My Pick:

I hadn't had a chance to play Conqueror's Galleon yet, and being a colourless card could go in any deck, so I snapped it up. Savage Stomp was probably the right pick, though.

  Pack 2 pick 2:

  My Pick:

If I was going to be in blue then removal would be hard to find, so I took Run Aground over another Shaper Apprentice.

  Pack 2 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Grazing Whiptail has actually been a solid card so far, and there was nothing else here anyway.

  Pack 2 pick 4:

  My Pick:

I wasn't making the same mistake twice. River Herald's Boon was the pick and I'm now fully commited to Merfolk.

  Pack 2 pick 5:

  My Pick:

This was a pick I was happy to Pounce on and take now.

  Pack 2 pick 6:

  My Pick:

This was kind of a nothing pick. I could have taken Jungle Delver but it is not a great card, even in a Merfolk deck, and I already had a Wind Strider. I ended up taking Favorable Winds, thinking that if I ended up with a high enough density of flyers (or Shaper Apprentice)s I could include it.

  Pack 2 pick 7:

  My Pick:

I'm guessing no one is pn Pirates if Fell Flagship is still in this pack. I took Ravenous Daggertooth as a curve filler.

  Pack 2 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Nothing really in the pack, but Dive Down can come in out of the sideboard against removal heavy decks.

  Pack 2 pick 9:

  My Pick:

I haven't been overly impressed with Crash the Ramparts so far but there was nothing else here anyway.

  Pack 2 pick 10:

  My Pick:

It's a Merfolk, it's evasive, and you don't want too many of them.

  Pack 2 pick 11:

  My Pick:

  Pack 2 pick 12:

  Pack 2 pick 15:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 1:

  My Pick:

Pay off time. I didn't look any further than Shapers of Nature, the perfect card for a Merfolk deck.

  Pack 3 pick 2:

  My Pick:

This pick was a real toss up between another Shaper Apprentice and Snapping Sailback. I took the Sailback as it is often a removal spell, and am hoping the Apprentice comes back.

  Pack 3 pick 3:

  My Pick:

Wow! Now I'm really getting paid off, with a second Shapers of Nature. I'm suddenly very happy with how my deck is shaping up (pun intended).

  Pack 3 pick 4:

  My Pick:

I mostly took Tempest Caller as it was a Merfolk, but could have easily also taken Shipwreck Looter.

  Pack 3 pick 5:

  My Pick:

One with the Wind is a powerful, underrated card (edit - I wrote that before the World Championships. It seems it's not as underrated now). The removal in the format is slow, and if you put this on, say, a 2/1 or 2/2 two mana creature, you suddenly have a threat that demands to be dealt with. Pick this card and play this card.

  Pack 3 pick 6:

  My Pick:

Deeproot Warrior is the easy pick here.

  Pack 3 pick 7:

  My Pick:

As is Shaper Apprentice in this pack.

  Pack 3 pick 8:

  My Pick:

Prosperous Pirates is not a bad card, but I doubt it will make the cut.

  Pack 3 pick 9:

  My Pick:

As above. This one might make the cut though as a way to keep attackers at bay.

  Pack 3 pick 10:

  My Pick:

Shaper Apprentice number four.

  Pack 3 pick 11:

  My Pick:

Unclaimed Territory is another decent pick up not that I have a critical mass of Merfolk. It will help fix my mana well.

  Pack 3 pick 12:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 13:

  My Pick:

  Pack 3 pick 14:

THE DECK

I am very happy with the way this deck turned out, especially picking up the two Shapers of Nature in pack three. The four Shaper Apprentice should also play off of each other quite well.

RESULTS

I went 1-2 across my matches, with a 3-4 game record. This is disappointing to me, as I really felt this deck was a lot stronger than that. I can blame a bit of bad luck, especially in my second match where I drew a ton of land and not much else, but the truth is I lost to two very aggressive decks, one black/red and the other red/white. The games were tight, but just didn't go my way

What did I learn from my deck? Shaper Apprentice, especially in numbers with other Merfolk, is quite good. Tempest Caller didn't do much for me as I was mostly losing by the time I could cast it, and Conqueror's Galleon also didn't do anything as my games never went long. I liked the feel of this deck and am looking forward to trying Merfolk again.

FIRST PICK, FIRST PACK

Here's a pack of Ixalan I opened on Magic Online. What's the pick?
