Modern is back on the Pro Tour. Woo hoo! And how very convenient, because it's that time again.

There is some ambiguity about Modern's "birthday". Some argue that it's May 27, when we first saw A Modern Proposal. Others say May 19, when Modern was first announced as a format for the Community Cup Challenge. Another faction declares June 16, when it was actually played at the CCC. I use August 24, which is the day it became a sanctioned format. Back in 2012, I threw a party on Moderns birthday. In 2013, I did it again.

This year, it's being done a little differently.

longtimegone, a cohort who has been running events a goodly amount of time, has expressed an interest in organizing. So I'm going to throw him in the deep end.

Other than basic event date/time/structure (8/24/2014 / 1600 UTC / X Rounds Swiss, T8), the ball is in his court, with my blessing. I've written "letters of introduction" to some of my regular sponsors on his behalf, and I am still involved as "producer" and "technical consultant", but it's his show this year.

The Book of Modern
from Overdriven! 66

1. In the beginning, there was the format, and the format was Extended

2. The Poobahs looked upon the face of the format, and did darken their faces in anger, 3. for the format was not played, 4. and the people did scorn the format.

5. The Poobahs set forth to gather, and much rain fell upon the land. 6. The halls of The Ivory Tower filled with lamentations and gnashing of teeth; 7. Poobahs congregated on the fifth dawn 8. to determine the fate of the format. 9. The Poobahs sent forth their herald 10. who read forth the word of the format:

11. The number of the blocks shall be four, and four shall be the number of the blocks. 12. No longer shall the number of blocks be varying, upon the whim of the season, 13. but fixed at four. No more, no less. 14. No longer shall the format rotate upon the whim of the season, 15. but the rotation shall follow the rotation of Standard, 16. upon the release of a new block.

17. And the format was not played, 18. and the people did scorn the format.

19. It came to pass that the people played a new format, 20. whose face was not yet known, and whose name was Overextended. 21. And there was much rejoicing among the people.

22. The Poobahs were not pleased, and swore a mighty oath 23. to remake the format [whose name was Extended]. 24. Once more the conclave was called, and much rain fell upon the land. 25. In the depths of The Ivory Tower was made a new format 26. from the ashes of the old. 27. And the format, whose name is Modern, 28. was unleashed upon the people.

Meta Madness

After three years of trying to keep my fingers on the pulse of Modern on MTGO, stick a fork in it, I am done. This latest month of missing event results, combined with WotC's typical poor communication, and the elimination of Premiere Events, have convinced me.

I am so over this [REDACTED].

I'm done!

Overdrive!, which started on July 4th, 2011, is the original Modern format Player-Run Event! In fact, Overdrive! is even older than Modern, having started out as an event in the Overextended format. Overdrive! is a single elimination event: two men enter, one man leaves. Registration is done via Gatherling. You can find more information at the main event thread here.

longtimegome brought U Tron, and defeated Bounce and Living End before succumbing to brazil's infection.
