Emrakul, the Aeons Torn

This is a wicked, nasty brew. Imagine it. Turn 3, Loot for R, toss Emmy into the graveyard, Goryo for 1B, Emmy onto the field, swing for fifteen, and destroy your opponent's board. Oh! And you get another turn. Boom.

Breach decks and Goryo's Vengeance decks are not new. They have been lurking in the fringes for quite a while, but never really took off. This particular brew is new, and seems to combine the best of both worlds. We'll see if it continues to appear, or fades into the woodwork as it's predecessors have.

Blood Artist

Once again CK cohort grapplingfarang puts up a 4-0 finish in the SE's, and with Blood Artistry! If you think I'd let a chance pass to slip this deck in again, think again! Blood Artistry is my new favorite "combo" deck. Also, with three appearances in the meta charts, I think it can be viably called a T2 archetype at this point.

Another new archetype has emerged into the Modern world from the AVR release, and has clawed it's way to the top of the charts in just a few short weeks. This archetype is a UW Aggro/Control deck known as...

Restoration

This deck currently comes in three flavors: Delver, Aggro, and No-Hawk. The basic core of the deck is the same: Geist of Saint Traft, Restoration Angel, Snapcaster Mage, and a counter/control package. It's the accessories that determine which flavor...

This is a Delver version. While, in theory, I could keep it tracked with the rest of the Delver decks, it does have the core of Restoration. I'm almost positive there are some instances of this deck listed as UW Delver. I would have to go back through over two weeks of results to clarify it, and I'm far too lazy to do so. So it's "from here on out" for this flavor of Restoration

Restoration Angel

This is a version with swords.

I originally called it No-Hawk because prior to AVR, it looked like Caw without Squadron Hawk. Now, Restoration Angel has taken over the role of flying sword bearer. They all work basically the same way: lay down some beaters, and try to keep your opponents on his heels with control while you bash face.

Some versions of this archetype also run Baneslayer Angel. There are also Pod and Death & Taxes builds running Restoration Angel, but these do not really fall into the same category as the Restoration archetype, and will be filed in their respective categories. A 5cc version of Restoration appeared just this morning. I expect Esper, and possibly Bant, Boros, and Naya, versions of Restoration to pop up sometime in the next few weeks, as well. I'll deal with those as they come.

Just to give you an idea of the kind of numbers this archetype is putting up, let me show you the "big boys" meta chart:

In the two weeks since it's first appearances, it's made it's way from being a fringe player (UW/x No-Hawk was a fringe U/x/x Control deck prior to the release of AVR) to the number twelve eleven ten spot in two weeks!  I have not seen a deck move like this in the Modern era, ever! Tron and Delver both took about a month to make their way to the top when they started showing up. But this... this deck's performance is impressive.

Here's how the three four decks in the archetype tally up individually:

One thing to remember is that the No-Hawk numbers look a little skewed, performance wise. This is due to a half dozen pre-AVR appearances. This will "even itself out" when (not if) No-Hawk starts to fill in more 4-0 slots.

The numbers don't lie. This deck has the looks of being the "next big thing".

Speaking of the next big thing...

  The Modern Meta, Phase 3
In Which Doris Gets Her Oats

At the end of the month we go into Q3, and all the meta data will "reset", again. Which means next month will once more have the meta "growing from scratch". This will also give me an opportunity to make any changes I may need to the spreadsheets. The Q2 data will become "static", and get shoved off into the dusty corner under my e-bed that is my google drive. There it can sit next to the Q1 data for anyone that's interested.

The third quarter is also when we will be celebrating Modern's first birthday. That's coming up in just about two months, as well.

Interesting Tidbits

Overdrive! will very shortly be celebrating it's one year anniversary! Overdrive! #52 is next week! Thanks to our sponsor, Alphabot, each player will receive a special "promo" card, with the winner receiving a foil copy, as well:

The next Banned & Restricted announcement is here (or will be tomorrow if this article comes out on Tuesday). I'm pretty sure it's going to read, once again: Modern - No changes. I'm either going to look wise or look like a dork.

Modern SE attendance continues to track well.

I like the Goryo's Breach deck. I played against a similar deck except it ran Fury of the Horde.
Turn 1: Faithless Looting, Discard Griselbrand
Turn 2: Goryo's Vengeance, attack with Griselbrand draw a ton of cards, cast two Fury of the Horde removing 4 red cards, Turn 2 kill

Pretty cool stuff but I imagine that deck is a little more consistent.

Gerry T wrote an article about the breach/goryo deck. said it was the most powerful thing you could be doing in Modern. Seems better in Legacy, where people don't play Spell Snare or Mana Leak...and there are better and more abundant reanimation spells. Show and Tell > Through the Breach

BTW- RDW winner is a type 2 deck with Shard Volley...lol. Funny how many well built type 2 decks do well at your events.
