 Of Peasants and Paupers

Hello all, Welcome back.  I know we missed a week and that was my fault.  Well it was a thunderstorms fault but I take responsibility.  Needless to say MMA is here and a good number of people were talking about the new cards that have opened up for Peasant, I even tried out a new dredge deck using Worm Harvest I think my record was something like 47 worm tokens attacking.  I will try and put together a special about the De-Powered Nine of Modern Masters.

On a side note we are in the Community Cup season for full information look here.  I love seeing the Player Run Event Community represented in this it really helps showcase one of the best parts of MTGO.  P.R.E.'s are the closet thing many of us have to a local game shop feel. That being said I want to send out a couple thanks.

Gwyned - If you do not know this guy I recommend reading his Blog.  He is the authority on Standard Pauper.  He hosted MPDC longer then I have been playing MTGO, and is truly one of the nicest guys you can find in game.  (MPDC is Monday Pauper Daily Challenge for more info about that look here.)

_Kumagoro_ - He is best known as the current host of Tribal Apocalypse he also hosts SunCom a Sunday Commander P.R.E. and he write the Diaries of the Apocalypse.  He may also host more I am not sure, but he is always helpful and does his best so every player has a good experience in the P.R.E.'s he runs.

So take a minute and check out their writing or if you can play in one of Kuma's events.

The Decks

Part of me still wants to call Caw Blade Angry Birds but that is just my sense of humor.  This deck makes use of the interaction of Brainstorm and Squadron Hawk to draw huge amounts of cards.  If you haven't seen this you cast Squadron Hawk fill your hand with 3 hawks Brainstorm place 2 hawks on top of your library and then cast a second hawk redrawing your hawks,  you can also do this with just two hawks and filter away a second card.  Add that with Trinket Mage that also allows you to shuffle your deck and Brainstorm really goes the distance.

  • Swords to Plowshares This is premium removal in this deck this card has been around since the start of magic and it has earned its place as a 4 of in this deck, The only card I can compare it to is Path to Exile and frankly I am not sure which of these two are better.
  • Mental Misstep This card is sweet in Peasant.  It can just be a blowout for 2 life or it can do absolutely nothing the entire game.  Peasant and Pauper are games of early drops and having the ability to say no to a turn 1 delver or goblin can make a huge difference in life totals at the end of the game.

*Writers note There was an Error in gatherling about this deck I have pieced together what I thought was the correct numbers

Rebels in a post.  Not sure what they are posting exactly but it looks like a win.  This deck makes use of hate cards namely circle of protection and fliers with protection from red or black.  As far as the meta goes this deck works well in the first game and even better after the side board.

  • Ramosian Revivalist Rebel recursion this guy works well with bound in silence and can fetch any of your rebels from the bin.
  • Brave the Elements This is a good catch all against removal like Firespout or electrickery, it also works as an alpha strike card letting your whole team have protection from the main blocking color.

The numbers tell us that this week we saw a great deal of aggro and 4 out of the 12 decks were running black with three being MBC.  Now this was a small week so having a top 4 doesn't give a good breakdown of the winning decks as tiebreakers kept a few people out of the Final 4.

Peasant 12.05
Rank Player Match Points OMW % PGW % OGW % Matches Played Byes
1 coolcat1678 9 0.444 0.857 0.304 5 0

5 branik 6 0.444 0.571 0.397 4 0
6 CIPPDOGG 6 0.333 0.714 0.254 3 0

This gives a better breakdown of the standings before the cut to the top 4.  Due to a programming error 5th place was awarded a seat in the top 4.  Sad for me but as host I did not mind sitting this one out.

Now we get a chance to see that the winning decks fought their way though a good deal of black and red this is the main reason coolcat1678 did so well he had main deck rebels with protection from red or black not to mention Circle of Protection: red, black, and green in his sideboard.  He played the meta and came out on top.

The Wrap Up

This card was a bit expensive because of it play ability in other formats but thanks to Modern Masters reprints it's price has dropped considerably.

 eternal witness

This lady does a lot for green and in a slide or Junk deck she can easily grab back spot removal or bring back your combo piece.  In Green post LD decks she also allows for easy recasting of Reap and Sow.  She is versatile and is aggressive enough to trade up in most cases.
