The Decks

On to the Meat of the article.  This week I bring you the top decks of the events that have happened so far in season 11.  And a bit of a look at to the Uncommon aspects of the decks.

This deck Is downright mean and effective.  While MBC is not a deck you would consider to be tier 1 in regular Pauper you are looking at one of the hardest match ups possible.  DragonWarrior2  took this to an impressive 5-0 victory.

Lets take a look at how.

  • Vampire Nighthawk Flying, Lifelink, and Deathtouch with a 2/3 body and at the perfect number 3 CMC so you can Unearth this bad boy. The only thing this critter doesn't deal with is a Guardian of the Guildpact, but with Lifelink that doesn't matter much.

  • Engineered Plague Goblins, Faeries, and Elves, this card eats them and sticks around too.  This is one of the cards that can just shut a normal Pauper deck down.

This is a deck that can do just about anything.  From land destruction, to life gain, to big burn finish to swarm of creatures, it seems like the only thing this deck isn't doing is hand destruction. The main problem with a deck like this is speed goblins can be swinging for 11 or more damage on turn 3. Delver by turn 3 can usually be swinging for 6 while leaving up counterspell.  However lets take a look at what makes this deck different.

  •  Firespout Ouch, and more Ouch.  I give you the PEZ Wrath of God.  3 mana bye bye board.  Very few creatures outside affinity decks can survive this.  I know in other formats this card sees a great deal of play so it is no wonder it sees play here.  Coming from a pure pauper perspective though you do not see cards like this and over extending is the norm if not needed to break board stalls.  If you are in red or green and can afford a splash this card is a must.

  • Yavimaya Elder   I have to say this guy this is one of the reasons I love PEZ.  This guy mana fixes, card draws, chumps for value, and has 2 power to attack with if needed.  The old Elder is a good solid card he is not format breaking, but he is well worth his place in the deck.

  •  Urza's Factory   Ok what on earth are you going to do with all your Cloudpost mana? Make dudes make a lot of Dudes.  Before the Banning of Isochron Scepter Cloudpost broke the meta using this land for dudes and recurring counterspells. we don't see many traditional post decks anymore which to me is a bit strange, however this land always has a place in a mana ramp deck and if you really wanna play it you can also get a sweet full art one!

Mother of Runes

MAMA said knock you out! Sorry I could not help it .White Weenie we all have had to face it at one point.  Now imagine WW and none of your removal spells work none of your creatures can get through.  This is the power of Mama.

  •  Mother of Runes  This is Mama. 1/1 for 1 with the ability to just say No!  Having 4 is a given in WW.  There are answers for her out there but she does really define WW in this format.

  • Brave the Elements The finisher that saves.  As a 1 mana instant that can either stop mass removal or let you swing in for the kill this is a great pony to place your bets on.

Three (Vampire Nighthawks) and two Engineered Plague have we not seen this before?  Well yeah these guys are strong really strong cards but this deck uses one of those pesky online vrs paper rarity cards.

  •    Hymn to Tourach Those of you my age remember when this card was printed.  You remember trying to figure out the best way to randomly get cards out of your opponent’s hand.  If you are like me you remember your opponent laughing as you missed their bombs.  Ok childhood trauma over, to the card.  This bad boy is the definition of a "Groan Test" If you play it you groan that you might not get a relevant card or you draw it late game when it does nothing.  When you have it played against you groan at the random aspect, and being on the losing side of a "2 for 1".

 The Meta

That sums up the top decks so far this season.  However I want you all to get a good feel for what it is like to play PEZ.

The meta of the most recent event breaks down like this. Please note players are allowed to name their own decks

This shows that currently MBC is the deck to beat.  With both coolcat1678 and francis_robert going 3-0 heading into the finals.  However many of the stronger players that we usually see were not in attendance this time around.  We see a lot of aggro on this board so with the death of storm critters are running rampant.  I wish I could give you all a better idea of meta breakdowns but frankly this one was a little player shy and everyone was all over the board.  If I can keep up with getting out a quality article, I hope to be able to break this down better and go into a little more about the 2nd through 4th place decks.  I also plan to ask for help with understanding the meta as I am not good at this.

If you are interested in helping me understand this then please send me a PM.  I am also looking for top Peasant players to be willing to let me pick their brain about this season so if you do not mind me interviewing you also send me a PM.

The Wrap up

This week I leave you with an uncommon in paper but rare online card waiting to be broken.

 Land Tax

That is right in Pez this card is playable but is it really worth one of your card slots?   Let me know what you think.
