The Future of White in Standard and Block
by Daniel Kenmar (The D.K.)

The Born of the Gods image gallery fully spoiled the entire set last Friday, and I immediately took to Twitter with some early impressions. Unless you're one of the 14 people who follow me, you probably didn't see it. (4 of those followers are actually members of the MTG community: Heather Dawn aka RevisedAngel; Polish Tamales, a terrific artist who draws some cool MTG fanart; Christian Goldie, a contributor to the great CMDR-based YouTube channel Top and Go Productions; and foolizzet, a new guy that just followed me. You could follow me too, by the way, @danielkenmar.)

After spending some more time looking at the gallery, I'm just appreciating the love for White here. White has been my favorite color in MTG since I started playing the game. My favorite card ever is Commander Eesha, every FNM deck I've ever run contained White, and my three Commander decks in paper contain White (Teysa, Orzhov Scion, Isperia the Inscrutable, and Ruhan of the Fomori). As of the moment in Standard, I'm running White Weenie. In Block, I'm running W/U Heroic. And now that I've seen the full list for Born of the Gods, I'm feeling so good right now. Today, I'd like to talk about six of the cards that interest me the most in White due to their implications on Standard and Block Constructed.

"So, D.K. What does this have to do with budget deckbuilding? I thought Pennypincher Deckbuilder was for people who play on the cheap!" I hear ya, I hear ya. The reason for writing this article is because White has usually been a budget friendly color. With a few notable exceptions such as control staples (i.e. board wipes, Restoration Angel, Planeswalkers, spot removal like Path to Exile), White usually falls back on a tried and true strategy: Weenie Aggro. Throw out a bunch of cheap dudes and turn 'em sideways until the opponent loses. Even when it splashes other colors like in W/U or W/R Heroic, it still follows the same general guideline of small and efficient creatures wrecking face. That said, all of a sudden I feel like the optimal White Weenie list is about to get a lot more expensive.
