Hello, and welcome back to the Pure vs Legit Versus Series. In episode 6, you'll have the pleasure of watching me--packing my trusty Grixis Control list--get pummeled by Josh and his more stock Jeskai Burn deck. You already know how Jeskai works, and Grixis is just U/B splashing for burn, card advantage, and an upgrade in finishers, so without further ado:

Attention control players: if you play too few counterspells, you lose to burn decks. It didn't matter how much removal and card draw I had; I almost constantly found myself in lethal burn range desperately digging for a Dissolve. Additionally, although Keranos, God of Storms is excellent as far as resiliency and card advantage go, he isn't particularly skilled at preserving my life total compared to something like Prognostic Sphinx which can block. I also think losing the lifegain lands hurt me in this matchup more than gaining scry lands did.

Overall, Grixis is sweet but not where I want to be in this format. If you want to win, you have to be able to not die to a flurry of burn, but you also need to be able to answer Whip of Erebos and Jeskai Ascendancy effectively after they hit the table. As much as I hate it, control probably needs Perilous Vault or Banishing Light right now.

Thanks for reading! Remember to leave questions in the comments for my upcoming mailbag article.
