I have played Standard the last several years, but honestly, my heart just hasn't been in it. Honestly, I haven't loved the format since Hellrider was legal three-four years ago. But, maybe this will be the year that I start loving the format again.

It's been a while since I've done this, but there are several things that have made me feel like a grumpy old man of late. So, to purge them from my system and become the happy-go-lucky guy I usually am, it's time to vent.

GP: Indy wasn't a complete disaster, but my play was definitely less than stellar. Given that I don't have a ton of top flight Modern events on the horizon, I've decided to look at some other Modern decks to play around with in the mean time.

I'm locked in. I know my deck, and I know what I'm playing at the GP. And unlike Detroit, there will be no last minute switch. But there are a few decks in the field that completely terrify me.

The common belief is that Red is Dead. I can appreciate that it hasn't really be knocking down doors and leading victory parades much lately, but its demise is highly exaggerated. While the Wolf-Pig deck has not panned out in the slightest, I'm still not ready to give up.

I haven't played a ton of Standard the last couple months, but that doesn't mean I haven't been brewing and thinking and theorizing. With Eldritch Moon getting ready to hit the bits and bytes of MTGO, here are a couple brews I've been tinkering with.

Not everything is a winner. Sometimes, you strike lightning and have something amazing right out of the box. There are times, through trial and error and weeks or grinding, you are able to push, poke, and prod an idea into something good and worthwhile. But most of the time? Our ideas are a complete cluster. One snafu after another. My "Decks" collection on MTGO is simply rife with examples.

Always the bridesmaid, never the bride. Taking second in back to back GPT's is not the finish I was hoping to have. My primary nemesis? Infect. The big question? Can I beat infect, like ever, with Green Moon.

After a brief hiatus from writing, I have returned. It's been quite the month, as much of my time was spent being consumed by my beloved Cavaliers winning the NBA Championship, and my subsequent celebrations. Having thoroughly worn myself out with my fandom, I got back to Magical things. And Doubling Season has caught my eye.

This Thursday, the entire world should get to see something amazing. The Community Super League (CSL) will be playing some Modern. But with a twist. This Modern will be complete, with no banned list. What could possibly go wrong?

One of my favorite cards of all time is Bloodbraid Elf. The hatred and filth that spewed forth from my mouth when the card was banned was not for the feint of heart...nor women, children, the elderly, or even sailors. Cascade is a pretty sweet effect. But recently, I've been into a differing, although similar, effect. Come check out my Brain in a Jar.

Lots of things are happening, and have been happening, at the Magic promotional level. And while I won't take a stand against either side, in any of the cases, it has colored where I am going with Magic myself.

It's a double PPTQ/PTQ weekend on MTGO, with players having the option for Modern or Limited. Given that I'm horrible at Limited, I'll be sticking with Modern. While I know what I will play if I qualify for the finals, I'm in somewhat of a quandary as to what to play to get me there.

I admit that Standard is awesome right now, and the results of the most recent PT really drive home how good the format is right now. But, it lacks hate. It lacks answers. As such, I have a significant affinity for Modern. Because there are hate cards in Modern. And no one loves the hate more than me.

This past weekend was the first since the new bannings/unbannings. Even with only the loss of one card, there was nary an Eldrazi to be found. Looks like there a new Modern in town, and we're all along for the ride.

It happened. The much anticipated, long awaited update to the Modern B & R list came out on Monday. In a move that I found in no way shocking, people still aren't happy, and it's still the end of the world. Trust me, it will be OK.

Here it is...the Shadows over Innistrad pre-release weekend we've all been anticipating. As with life in general, there is also a hierarchy of needs that you should consider to make the experience the best possible.

With the new rotation schedule, cards are leaving the Standard format as at a quicker rate. Many cards that rotate will not have a home outside of Standard. As I look over the cards that will be leaving us in a couple weeks, I can't help but think I've missed a lot of opportunities to play with really cool things.

I watch a lot of streamers. The last couple weeks, one of the bigger streaming "groups" has decided to run a 100-Ticket Modern event, with Eye of Ugin banned, for 20 of their streamers. This got me to thinking, not only about how cheap it can be to play competitively in Modern, but also how we may see a surge in Standard budget/low-cost decks post rotation.

There I sat, at the players meeting. I as mere minutes away from turning in my deck list for GP: Detroit. I looked down at my GR Eldrazi list. I scrawled "1033" in the upper corner...my table number for the players meeting. And then, something happened...

It't Wednesday night as I write this, and I've known for the past couple days what I was sleeving for Detroit. Sometimes, you just have to embrace the hate, and let big idiots carry you.

Being known as the Red-Green guy is both a blessing and a curse. Sure, whenever I play locally, pretty much everyone knows what they will be playing against when they see me. But, on the flip side, I also get called out and pointed to pretty much every RG deck that does well.

The next couple weeks are going to provide a huge shake out for Modern. First, we have SCG: Louisville this coming weekend, and follow that up with GP: Detroit on the first weekend of March. While I won't be attending the event in Kentucky, I will be going to Detroit. The big question is, what should I play?

So, how many of you watched the PT coverage over this past weekend? If you confined yourself purely to the Top 8 and nothing else, you probably have a pretty warped view of the current Modern metagame. But sit back, relax, and understand...we are NOT being overrun by our Eldrazi overlords, and there are plenty of answers available.

Last week, I wrote about how I managed to spike a GPT for Detroit to get some byes. Now, it's time to come up with something for the wife to wield to earn her own set of byes for the event. Since we are registered and the hotel is bought and paid for, it's time to get this done and hopefully it will end in success.
