Welcome back to Rick's Picks!

Born of the Gods is finally here, which means it's time to add a different pack to spice things up in Theros draft. Well, for most people. For me, it's time to venture into the wild, wild lands of triple-small-set drafting. Let's get to that.

FULL PLAYLIST

There we go. Despite a close and unfortunate defeat in the finals, we had some interesting games all around. Some quick impressions before I wrap this up:

  • Not to be a Debbie Downer or anything, but cards seem to be of a way lower power level than those in Theros, at least at first glance. That isn't necessarily a problem for me (I've been known to enjoy Mercadia block drafts way more than anyone should, for example), but chances are this will lead to less epic games overall.
  • Tribute is most certainly not my cup of tea. Giving your opponent choices is almost always bad, making the mechanic pretty unreliable. I love the mechanic from a design standpoint, but it's simply not much fun to play with.
  • W/x Heroic was by far my favorite strategy in Theros. It's probably still very viable in BNG-THS draft, but here it doesn't seem to be as good. There's a lack both of super aggressive cheap Heroic cards and truly amazing Heroic enablers. It's probably playable (and I'll definitely try it soon), but not nearly as explosive.

That's all I have for today. Drafting BNG-BNG-BNG is all I'm gonna do in my free time this week (at least until Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze hits on Friday. I do love me some Nintendo monkey business), so I hope you come back for more small set goodness soon.

Thanks for reading / watching!
