Rise of Eldrazi is out.  Everyone is excited and eager to play in a fresh format but unfortunately we'll have to wait a few more weeks for Rise of Eldrazi to arrive on MTGO.  I rather enjoyed putting gigantic monsters into play last week and wasn't sure I would be able to find anything to tide me over until RoE makes its way to the digital world - that is until I saw the following list played by mindcandy:

I'm fairly certain Time Sieve's slogan is something like, "taking more turns so you don't have to."  The basic premise is to play a bunch of artifacts, draw multiple cards every turn via Howling Mine and/or Jace Beleren and then take an endless stream of turns via Time Warp and Time Sieve until the game is over.  Don't worry about running out of artifacts; Open the Vaults conveniently returns all of your Time Sieve fodder to be recycled.  I decided to put the deck together and take it for a spin in the queues.

CONCLUSIONS

The deck is certainly fun to play although I assume it isn't much fun for your opponent to have to sit watching you go through the motions for several minutes before it is clear that you've won the game.  If I were to play the game on MTGO again I'd cut the single Architects of Will and Everflowing Chalice for a 2nd Pilgrim's Eye and a Pithing Needle.  Pilgrim's Eye was always impressive and I'd like to have a 1cc artifact to fetch with Tezzeret the Seeker.

Once RoE arrives on the scene Prophetic Prism provides access to up to four additional Kaleidostones if so desired.

But enough about the old, what I'm really interested in at the moment is what new angles of attack can be pursued with the goodies out of Rise of Eldrazi.

RISE OF ELDRAZI DECK IDEAS

One of the ways I begin to consider deck building is by thinking about how new cards relate to what we've seen in the past.  RoE provides plenty of large monsters we'd all love to cast and a few ways to accelerate into them - including a pair of lands: Eye of Ugin and Eldrazi Temple.  Now when I saw Eldrazi Temple I immediately flashed back to Temple of the False God

and so I quickly put together the following:

Eldrazi White

Creatures
1 Iona, Shield of Emeria
1 Baneslayer Angel
2 cards

Other Spells
4 Eldrazi Temple
4 Everflowing Chalice
4 Expedition Map
4 Wall of Omens
3 Oblivion Ring
4 Day of Judgment
4 Martial Coup
3 Gideon Jura
3 Elspeth, Knight-Errant
1 Emrakul, the Aeons Torn
2 Ulamog, the Infinite
2 Kozilek, Butcher of Truth
22 cards
Lands
15 Plains
1 Emeria, the Sky Ruin
1 Eye of Ugin
3 Tectonic Edge
20 cards

Expedition Map

The idea here is similar to the old mono-white control lists sporting Eternal Dragon, Decree of Justice and Temple of the False God.  In this deck Expedition Map allows you to make your land drops while also finding your eldrazi reducing lands to enable you to Opportunity+12/12 and Vindicate+11/11 most regularly with the possibility of Time Warp+15/15.  Expedition Map also finds answers to manlands in Tectonic Edge and the ability to get addition value out of Wall of Omens or threaten Iona or Baneslayer every turn.  It's a rough idea but it puts together two of the themes of RoE: Eldrazi and White is good!

But aside from building with the past in mind, I also like to begin by trying to build around certain cards that catch my eye.  So here are some of the ideas currently running through my head:

Nest Invader is good.  for a 2/2 plus acceleration seems like it ought to have a home.  It may simply slide into Jund but I keep trying to make a Macey Rock style deck with the 2/2 beater providing pressure and acceleration into more threats.

Speaking of I continue to have dreams of using Momentous Fall with Abyssal Persecutor.  The 6/6 for is a bargain if you can avoid it's drawback easily enough.  With access to Momentous Fall and Maelstrom Pulse the pairing just might work.

Is another card I'd like to find a home for.  The ability to find a colorless cards (this includes lands) makes it attractive to decks trying to cast Eldrazi but I've also wondered if the card could be used to aid the elven brethren in locating the Eldrazi Monument.  Perhaps in conjunction with Oran-Rief, the Vastwood, and something like Lodestone Golem Ancient Stirrings would provide enough value to see Eldrazi Elves thrive once again.  Or maybe Ancient Stirrings could be used to find the Eldrazi Monument as well as dig for Misty Rainforest and a lone Island to enable a blue splash for Negate or the new conditional counterspell

Ancient Stirrings would then enable the elves to find and protect Eldrazi Monument but at the cost of 7-8 slots it may simply not be worth it.

I hope you're enjoying RoE as much as I am.  Any cards that have caught your eye?  Sound off in the comments to let us know what you're pursuing now that RoE has been unveiled.

What happened to your promised follow up of the cruel control deck? I quite liked that deck, and more matches would definitely be interesting

Trouble with Momentous Fall and Abyssal Persecutor is by the time you want to sac the Percy, you should have won the game already, so the card advantage is just win more.

yeah should just use by ShardFenix at Mon, 04/26/2010 - 20:17

yeah should just use bonesplitter and not go into other colors since green doesnt offer anything to an abyssal deck really

Right, you don't want to kill by Motu at Mon, 04/26/2010 - 22:32

Right, you don't want to kill the persecutor until you have won. But Momentous Fall is fine when played in response to removal on your 3/3 beast or Putrid Leech whereas Bone Splinters is poor in other situations. Consuming Vapors is one of the few black options that seems viable.

at that point yes...im having by ShardFenix at Tue, 04/27/2010 - 01:35

at that point yes...im having a hard time though seeing a decklist beyond Abysall Persecutor, Momentous Fall, Maelstrom Pulse, maybe Putrid Leech...and at that point it almost seems like it would be easier just to modify jund rather than trying to build a new deck. Still not a bad idea though
