State of the Program for December 16th 2016

In the News

Open MOCS Sealed Event on Sunday: The Sunday MOCS event is open to all players. No QPs are required. First place in the event earns an invite to Pro Tour Amonkhet in Nashville. The event costs 40 TIX or 400 play points, and starts at 7am Pacific time.

Vintage Cube up Early: Wizards has given us powered Cube early. Full details of the cube are here. The Vintage Cube will run until January.

RTR Block Cards Removed from Drafts: Wizards has announced that, due to functionality issues, Common Bond and Mana Bloom will not appear in Return to Ravnica packs during Flashback Drafts this month.   Similarly, Realmwright, Ooze Flux and Structural Collapse will not appear in Gatecrash packs.

Filters for Decks: You can now apply the same filters to cards in your deck that you can apply to cards in the sideboard/collection portion of the deckbuilder screen. Look for the “Apply Filters” box on the bad. Seems moderately useful, especially in the later rounds of the Friendly Sealed League.

Aether Revolt Previews Are Starting: The preview season has begun. I am not going to write much about them, because my track record on set reviews is sketchy at best. Besides, lots of other people do that. I’ll just link to the official card gallery, which is here.

The Timeline

This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back.   Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. For quick reference, here are some major upcoming events.   In addition, there are either one or two online PTQs each weekend, with qualifiers running the three days prior to the PTQ.

Flashback Schedule:
Flashback drafts cost 10Tix or 100 Play Points or 2 Tix plus product. They are you-keep-the- cards, not Phantom. These are single elimination events that pay out in play points: 200 for first, 100 for second, and 50 for third and fourth place.

Dragon’s Maze, Gatecrash, Return to Ravnica

Flashback This Week: Flashback drafts this week are full Return to Ravnica block. The money card in that set are Sphinx's Revelation, with Rest in Peace and Abrupt Decay just below the $5 cut-off, plus the shock lands. Next week we will be drafting M14. M14 includes money cards Archangel of Thune and Scavenging Ooze, plus Mutavault as a near miss money card.

Opinion Section: Tis the Season

This week I have been at Christmas parties and potlucks and cookie exchanges. I am overfed and sleepy, and I have nothing to rant about at all. The closest thing I have to complain about is a recent draft. I first picked Panharmonicon and got passed great stuff. One game my opponent conceded when I cast Aviary Mechanic, bouncing both my Cloudblazers.

The only complaint I can possibly have with this deck is that I’ve played all three rounds.

It’s been a good week for me, and hopefully for all of you as well.  Now I’m off to taste-test some cookies, then maybe play some Vintage Cube.

Cutting Edge Tech

Standard: Does anyone care about Standard anymore? There were no large events last weekend, so I don’t have much info.   The new hotness is Aetherworks, and they are appearing in so many varieties that the various versions are being named.   I do like the name Marvelous Energy, though, so here you go.

Modern: Not a ton of Modern events this week, either, but I did see some results from Guf Brisbane.   What do you think of this?

Pauper: I faced this deck recently. Unfortunately for him, I drew several copies of Electrickery. He did not draw Lumenthread Fields, so that was that. The archetype is decent in Modern, and works in Pauper as well, so give it a try.

Legacy: No big Legacy events last weekend, so let’s look over the competitive leagues. What would I play, if I were looking to enter the league at the moment? Probably this.

Vintage:
The next season of the Vintage Super League will begin in early January. Until then, let’s look at the Vintage Dailies. This week, Dredge took it down – but a Dredge deck with twelve counterspells.   That’s new. What is even more interesting is that the sideboard transforms it into a Dark Depths deck.  Did you see that coming?

Card Prices

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.)   You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for over a decade now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard staples: Bam! Crash! Smash! That’s the sound of Standard prices falling down the stairs and out the door. I think people are getting tired of Standard, and are just going to Cube until the next set arrives.

Modern staples:  Modern prices are mixed this week. We have winners and losers, which is way better than the Standard prices, which were all losers. (Or all winners, depending on whether you are buying or selling.   I’m still trying to finish some decks, so yay?

Legacy and Vintage: Legacy and Vintage are mixed again this week. Vintage prices are down, but some Legacy staples climbed.  Treasure Chests are having an impact, especially on cards that were in really short supply, like Submerge and Port.

Set Redemption: You can redeem complete sets on MTGO. You need to purchase a redemption voucher from the store for $25. During the next downtime, Wizards removes a complete set from your account and sends you the same set in paper.  Treasure Chests and the current booster packs are here because they don’t really fit anywhere else.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is $ 23,920. That is down about $730 from last week.

Weekly Highlights

I was at GP Milwaukee last weekend.   After shoveling snow in a cold wind earlier this week, being inside a convention center completely cut off from nature was good.  It was also fun listening to the judges and players from far warmer climes whining about the temperature (the wind-chill was only a handful of degrees below zero F / -20 C) and the scattered snow (less than 6” / 15cm). That barely qualifies as inclement weather around here.

PRJ

“One Million Words” and “3MWords” on MTGO

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.

HammyBot Super Sale: HammyBot was set up to sell off Erik Friborg’s collection, with all proceeds going to his wife and son. So far, HammyBot has raised over $8,000, but there are a lot of cards left in the collection. Those cards are being sold at MTGOTrader’s Buy Price.
