Editorial Section:
Before we get into the meat and potato's this week I'd like to take a few seconds to thank the folks at Wizards for the card.  Thanks to Marci, Tolena, Worth, Gordon, Eric, Mike, MattT(Holla!) and everyone else involved in the MTG and MTGO world.

With those thanks out of the way, let's unveil this bad boy!

So what do we have here?  The basic stats are underwhelming for a creature.  All colors get better vanilla creatures than this now, but that's not why I'm going to be looking for this guy in my sealed pool soon.  Well, first of all, he's mono-white removal, and with all the low toughness infect weenies out and about it's always a great call to have a way to knock one or two out of the air.  There are 27 creatures in Scars of Mirrodin with a toughness of one.

The other thing that hat this guy does is entirely mess up the combat phase for attacking or blocking during combat.  How so?  For example, if I'm being attacked by a few creatures my options change vastly depending on what I have on my side of the board.  If I want to trade my two power with an attacker that outcome is easy, but that's not where this shines.  What gets this card on my radar is the ability to perform a double roll, regenerate my big guy for a price, or kill or permanently weaken an opposing creature.  Also, any recursion effects start to get a bit silly, with something like Mimic Vat you can perma-block and start whittling down the opposing creatures.  I love the options this card gives to combat situations, even when it's not involved in combat.  To me, that's a great sign of a card, where it can impact the game state in many different ways despite the relatively unimpressive stats.  As we know, we can't just judge the cards in a vacuum and they will always be impacted by other cards in the set which are as of yet, unknown.

And of course, the applications change as you go out into other formats, like tribal. Being a hound puts him in some pretty strange company for mono-white hounds.  He also has some combo potential with cards like Sun Titan where you can start to throw counters around before you attack.  All in all, I don't see this guy breaking down the Standard format but might have some block constructed potential as well as lots and lots of fun effects in other games.

Tournament Update:
I've been gearing up for a weekend of MTGO Classic events (Weekend Challenge of Friday and the ClassicQuarter.com invitational on Saturday) and found a couple of Stax lists that I liked, although they weren't really applicable as we were missing the Power Nine online right now.  I filled in the Power 9 and a few other holes and ran the following list in the Tournament Practice room:

Classic Stax
A deck shell for MTGO Classic
Creatures
1 Karn, Silver Golem
4 Lodestone Golem
5 cards

Other Spells
1 Strip Mine
3 Thorn of Amethyst
4 Chalice of the Void
1 Swords to Plowshares
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Mana Crypt
1 Imperial Seal
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Crop Rotation
4 Smokestack
4 Lotus Petal
2 Seal of Cleansing
1 Tinker
4 Mishra's Workshop
1 Mana Vault
2 Chains of Mephistopheles
1 Yawgmoth's Will
4 Crucible of Worlds
1 Trinisphere
2 In the Eye of Chaos
1 Sol Ring
1 Balance
33 cards
Lands
4 Gemstone Mine
1 Tolarian Academy
4 City of Brass
4 Wasteland
13 cards

Karn, Silver Golem

And got slaughtered, badly.  I would start very, very strong but then... just fold in the following turns when I wouldn't really draw anything relevant and they would eventually start to regather their mana abilities.  Especially since I was maybe setting them back a turn or two at the most.  So I would up switching decks to an old haterade style deck I once had... and got demolished by Elves... It's possible I'm just cursed with the format in general but I will deal with that as I need to, I guess.  Either way! I'm going to be joining the events over the weekend and I'll figure out the deck I'll play as I go.  Shame that RDW isn't in the mix right now...

Card Price Discussion:
It would appear that people are getting back on the Vengevine train now that it's popping up in Standard Elves lists and other places as well. Figures are a product of Extended Zoo/Naya/RDW decks putting up some decent numbers while the older Legacy/Classic cards are moving around thanks to the new MED4 and Legacy Banned List metagame.  Cards like Vindicate and Tarmogoyf and Pyroblast, for example.

your stax deck is too cute. by whiffy at Fri, 01/21/2011 - 12:53

your stax deck is too cute. it looks really fun, but your a little too all over the place. are you a lock down deck? a beat down deck? or a silver bullet deck? you cant be all 3. i would drop all those silly meta game cards like chains and in the eye of chaos and either concentrate on lock pieces, or more aggresiveness. With out moxes and a the blue cards, which are the only reasons to run blue in vintage, and especially no tangle wire. you dont have the best long game. hope you fix it up the way you like for the invitational, see ya there.

Yep, that's essentially what by hamtastic at Fri, 01/21/2011 - 15:30

Yep, that's essentially what I'm running into here. I start strong but then falter over the long game. I'm thinking a bit more aggression would be the best bet.

Both of them have their strong points.

Personally I love Chains as a sideboard option but I don't think it's for this deck . Dark Times should be running chaines to stop the flow of Gush, Brainstorm and Jace Ability #2.

I copped out and netdecked from your tournament results... we'll see how much better that works out. :)

hamtastic, love the price charts. Is there any way to view them for cards not highlighted above?
