Editorial Section:
Last week I sounded off about the changes to Extended, and this week I wanted to move to the next step... brewing for the new Extended! I'll rough out some deck sketches and point out some cards that are kind of hanging out on the sidelines. Some things that never really had a chance to hang out together.
Changelings + Allies - Essentially all Changelings will trigger the allies, and there are some pretty interesting new ways of using the two creature types together.
Merfolk -
Wake Thrasher, Coralhelm Commander, Sejiri Merfolk and friends are all going to work well together. This is just another place to jam Cryptic Command and possibly Jace 2.0 in the format. Granted, Faeries might have more overall power, however Merfolk don't get devastated by an early Cloudthresher like Faeries would be.
Singles of Importance:
Everlasting Torment. I think that we'll be seeing Kitchen Finks and many, many other irritating lifegain effects in the next round of Extended. As such, this is a card that's probably worth getting a set of them seeing as how they're hanging out at around $1.00 each right now. Many Black or Red aggro decks will want to have an easy way to keep their opponents from undoing all their hard work with some life gain.
Cryptic Command. Get used to seeing this card. Pro-tip: (Gaddok Teeg) still hoses Cryptic command and Day of Judgment.
Reveillark - Missing the "Body Double" effect right soon, but he (it?) could easily be a cornerstone for a deck with some support in future sets. Even without the amazing Body double combo there's a lot of still powerful cards to pair this guy up with. He's the type of card that can easily go from 0 to 60 overnight when something breaks him. Worst case scenario is that he triggers silliness with Mulldrifter... like usual.
Sanity grinding + Twincast et al:
If things get crazy again, I can totally see the old Sanity grinding decks coming back with other mill effects that we've gotten since this combo popped up around the end of this block's time in Standard.
Mirrorweave:
B/W Tokens was a powerhouse deck for a while, and it certainly could be powerful enough to be resurrected with our now existing card base. A superstar card in some token builds was Mirrorweave. Making all your weenie tokens into something gigantic and/or evasive is pretty much amazing.
The Lands:
Windbrisk Heights, the filter lands, Reflecting Pool, and most of those cards from that time frame were known entities of awesomeness, and there's no reason to think that they won't be again. It's not a stretch to say that the vivid lands and the return of Reflecting Pool
For no other reasons than random thoughts, I really like
Enchanted Evening right now, along with
Fracturing Gust. They just seem like they'll be useful and/or funny in the next few months.
Discussion Items:
Foil Price thoughts -
A good start on a discussion about foils on MTGO. It once was that foils would command a solid 100% to 150% value compared to the regular versions. However, now, they seem to be something like 50% or less, depending on the set and the foil.
MTGO 4th of July Celebration:
I figured this is sufficiently large enough news to make the list this week! Right now, there are lots and lots of events queued up for the weekend that certainly should see some heavy duty participation. Lots of oldie and goodie formats are on the docket, be sure to tuck some time away from celebrating this weekend (assuming you are celebrating, I suppose).
Card Price Discussions:
This week we saw some pretty dramatic rebounding data in the forms of the old school duals and other cards that are apparently on the M11 returning card list. There are a lot of downward drifting cards this week as well, including Jace-y poo. Nice to see that guy come down a bit, even if he's still squarely in "ludicrous" levels of cost.

Well, Everlasting Torment just got obseleted by the new red Leyline.
unless you're playing black, I guess. It also costs 1 less, so it might be better in some decks.
I hope people don't just tweak old standard decks for this new extended, and some other stuff appears. For instance, Goblins were never quite powerful enough to see play in lorwyn standard, but maybe warren instigator would be a big enough shot in the arm?
I think great sable stag is a pretty solid card to watch for price fluctuations.
I agree Stag could be a very important card and its price is going up each week slowly.
That will actually probably be exactly what happens...
So sad for Alara Packs

Problem with the Sanity Grinding deck: Emrakul.
Nice thing about possibly splashing black...extirpate, still sucks but clears out emrakul
But then you dilute the blue mana symbols for Sanity Grinding.
Is there a chart for Reveillark??
