State of the Program for March 17th 2017

In the News
No B&R Changes: Wizards announced no changes to the banned and restricted lists. Wizards said that they discussed and debated changes in both Standard and Vintage, but decided, in the end, to do nothing. They said that having three main decks in Standard (BG Snake, Mardu Vehicles and Copycat) was narrow but enough. It would be interesting to see if last weekend’s result, where GB Snake was completely absent, would have changed their minds. As for Vintage, Wizards is looking for more information. The article on the non-changes is here

Changes to Constructed Payouts: Wizards is once again tweaking Treasure Chest contents and constructed event payouts. As we have long known, having boosters as prizes in constructed events can mess with the value of boosters. When the prize boosters don’t match what players need, either because they are just one part of a draft set, or because players are drafting Cube or MM17, the value plummets. As a result, Wizards has stopped paying out boosters in constructed events, altogether. The new payouts, with more and better Treasure Chests, are here.

Modern Masters 2017 Events Announced:  We will have both keep-the-cards and phantom MM17 drafts. The phantom drafts are 10 TIX, or equivalent, and pay out in Play Points.  Keep-the-cards are 25 TIX or equivalent, and pay out in MM127 boosters.  Details here.

Monarch Ability Coming to MTGO: It’s played in Legacy in viable decks, so it is being added to MTGO, and cards with the ability will be appearing in Treasure Chests.

Modern Cube Continuing: The Cube made of entirely Modern legal cards will be around until next downtime.  The announcement is here. The card list is here

The Timeline
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back.   Another good source for dates and times is the calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Most of the major upcoming events we know of are listed.  Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online PTQs each weekend, with qualifiers running the three days prior to the PTQ.

Flashback, Throwback Standard and CUBE for 2017
Wizards will be offering either a flashback draft league, a flashback Standard gauntlet, a CUBE league or prerelease / Release events each week.   Here’s the schedule so far.

Flashback and Such Rotation

Ends
Cube Draft
March 8th
March 22nd
Modern Masters 2017 Leagues
March 22nd
April 12th
Mirage-Visions Throwback Standard
April 5th
April 12th

The new Flashback Leagues are still draft, and still you-keep-the-cards. They are 12 TIX / product plus 2 TIX / 120 Play Points. However, they are no longer single elimination. Now you play until you have three wins or two losses. Prizes are 150 play points for three wins and 70 Play points for 2 wins. The leagues run one week.

The Throwback Standard Gauntlet events provide a random choice of prebuilt decks from a past standard environment. These will function like the Pro Tour Gauntlets – you won’t need to own the cards. The entry fee is 10 TIX or 100 Play Points. Prizes are in Play Points: 150 for 3-0, 100 for 2-1, 40 for 1-2 and 10 play points as a bad beats award.

Opinion Section:  PSA
This has not been a great week. We lost Buster, our dog, to cancer. That makes two dogs in a bit over two years, that have died to cancer.

Cancer sucks. It completely sucks.

So, a PSA. If you smoke, please stop. I know it’s hard, but not as hard as cancer.

My Dad started smoking back before the adverse health effects of smoking were widely known. He quit, but quitting does not mean you are fine. He had smoked for a number of years, eventually got cancer, caused by having smoked.  Which sucked. And he died, which still sucks.

So, if you smoke, please stop.   For yourself and for those who love you.

Cutting Edge Tech
Standard: A couple of Standard GPs, all featuring Top 8s full of Mardu Vehicles (8) and Copy Cat (7), plus one lone RGB Energy. If you are looking for anything else, well, this archetype did passably well in Barcelona.

Modern: Not a lot of Modern events last weekend. Instead, I’m pulling a deck off the Competitive League 5-0 list. My criteria is simple: what would I enjoy playing that I have not featured recently.

Pauper:
I keep looking over the Pauper results week after week, and keep seeing the same decks.   I hope Modern Masters 2017 shakes up the format. It does reprint as common some choice former uncommons and at least one rare.

Legacy: Looking through the competitive Legacy leagues for decks that are not 1) Eldrazi, 2) Miracles, and 3) don’t have a creature base of Deathrite Shaman, Delver of Secrets, Gurmag Angler and either True-Name Nemesis or Young Pyromancer. I had to scroll past 12 decks before finding something at least a little different.

Card Prices

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.)   You can get these cards at MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for over a decade now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.

Standard staples: Standard prices dropped pretty hard this week. Standard players who have their decks, and are happy with those decks, are not buying cards. Other players may be less happy about the metagame, so they are not buying in. At least, that’s my best guess.

Legacy and Vintage: Legacy and Vintage took a mild slide this week. Ancestral slipped again. Wizards needs to do something else to promote Vintage. The Challenges are nice, but here’s hoping the Vintage leagues get here soon.

Set Redemption: You can redeem complete sets on MTGO. You need to purchase a redemption voucher from the store for $25. During the next downtime, Wizards removes a complete set from your account and sends you the same set in paper.  Treasure Chests and the current booster packs are here because they don’t really fit anywhere else.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is $ 24.410. That is up about $1,125 from last week.

Weekly Highlights
Not this week. Years ago, I made a rack where we hang the dogs’ collars when they no longer need them. I hung up Buster’s yesterday, next to the others.

This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.

HammyBot Super Sale: HammyBot was set up to sell off Erik Friborg’s collection, with all proceeds going to his wife and son. So far, HammyBot has raised over $8,000, but there are a lot of cards left in the collection. Those cards are being sold at MTGOTrader’s Buy Price.
