State of the Program for November 22nd, 2019
Banned: It was a real bloodbath this week in bans as three cards in Standard, Oko, Thief of Crowns, Once Upon a Time and Veil of Summer were removed from the format. Now the community waits as the outcry to ban Teferi, Time Raveler and Fires of Invention reaches a fevered pitch. Oko was also banned in Brawl. Modern saw no changes, but Wrenn and Six was removed from Legacy, and Narset, Parter of Veils was restricted in Vintage. For reasonings, go here.
No Action in Pioneer: After the other formats were dealt with Wizards went out to lunch and we waited for Pioneer. Nothing changed there this week, and they do not intend to make changes during Pioneer week, but they might!
Secret Lair: Another product, this time, thought to be a Loot Crate (hopefully without the bankruptcy) style offering will be revealed next week. You can see some clues about it here.
Challengers of Mythic Championship VII: The Challengers for the next Arena MC are up, and you can learn some about them here. Congrats to all the worthy competitors!
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Nothing this week, as when I sat down to write the article on Thursday, my stomach was rolling so badly I thought I was going to have to take a promethazine to get through the day. Thankfully that didn't happen, but I am so sick and exhausted right now, that writing this section would be awful.
Next week I am taking a Thanksgiving break from the article.
Standard: This is the winning deck from Twitch Rivals. Just a solid Golgari Adventures deck!
Brawl: Brawl is in this weird place, it's supposed to be a multiplayer format, but it's feels like it's mainly played as a 1v1 thing. I don't think Wizards knows what they are doing with Brawl.
Legacy: People say that Legacy is dead, but to those people, I counter with, Ninjas.
Modern: Getting in to Modern now, that everything has dropped could lead to a lot of fun Magic!
Pauper: A cheap aggro deck that looks to Voltron a creature? This is a fun strategy that gets overlooked in Pauper, mostly because Bogles are playable there, but with the next Theros, this might get a little better!
Pioneer: This is what I am going to play first in Pioneer week. I figure
Emry, Lurker of the Loch is super good, and getting to recur
Smuggler's Copter is nice. There is a ton of neat little plays and most of them work well with
Prized Amalgam. Self Mill feels like a powerful thing in the format,
Leyline of the Void of course is a predator, but working around shouldn't be to hard right?
Vintage: It's
Survival of the Fittest without Survival, or Dredge without Dredgers. Eternal players just constantly blow my mind. This deck looks like an absolute blast!
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.
Pioneer Challenge - Diem4x took mono black aggro to first place.
Pauper Challenge - A_AdeptoTerra won with Tron.
Modern PTQ - Congrats to 3HDgamers for qualifying with Green Tron!
Legacy Challenge - Falkoneye played Echo Artifacts to the win!
Vintage Challenge - kasa buried the opposition with Dredge.
Modern Challenge - tangrams won with Eldrazi Tron.
Pioneer PTQ - SknerusMcKwacz won with Bant Field.
MTGOTraders YouTube: Did you know that MTGOTraders.com has a YouTube page with videos added Monday, Wednesday and Friday? Well if not, now you do, and you can find it here!
I wrote a piece for LegitMTG that went over two turns I took in the Twitch Rivals event.
Seth Manfield says Green is the worst color in Standard after the bans.
Eric Moyer makes a great suggestion for a Ban Watch list.
Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples:
Nissa, Who Shakes the World left the list, and we had a few new additions thanks to some cards being freed, now that everything isn't a 3/3 Elk anymore.

Modern Staples:
Phyrexian Obliterator has dropped off, a few old faces are back, and Modern feels like a format people can buy in to and have a blast with.
Eternal Staples: Added
Daze and
Submerge to the list. Not sure how the Legacy ban or Vintage restriction impacted the formats.
Pauper Staples:
Tortured Existence fell off, nothing new came on.
Pioneer Staples:
Soul-Scar Mage came off the list this week.
Sphinx's Revelation took it's place though. Pioneer feels like it is settling down, and is in a good spot for Pioneer week.

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is 18762. Last week the number was 19435. It was time for a loss, and this week with the bannings, 673 dollars was snapped out of existence. It's not as bad as it has been in the past, and the ticket buy price went down, but again, not as bad as it was in the past. It will be some time I think, and I hope, before we see people buying tickets for .25 per again
I spent most of Monday getting ready for Twitch Rivals, played it in on Tuesday with Jund Food. Finished 51st, which was worth 300 dollars. Wrote a piece on Wednesday, wrote a piece on Thursday, and in general have not felt well in a few days. This weekend is Thanksgiving for me and Cassius, since he would be in Tennessee during our normal weekend, and the third awesome weekend in a row I get with him. Things are good, therapy is great, progress with not smoking is being made, and I am just so pleased with things.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.

Vivien, Arkbow Ranger M20 Mythic 68.77 <---wow this is incredible. Why is this card so pricy??
Because of monogreen dominating Pioneer?
She was on the rise in Standard as well, many decks had a few copies in the sideboard at the last Mythic Championship. She makes the difference between a Beanstalk Giant being nullified by a token or winning the game on the spot. And she kills planeswalkers without wasting any resource (except loyalty).
Because no one opened M20 on MTGO.
Because no wants to spend money on cards anymore, and with the rise of lending services, cards will spike like this as lending services look to get their demand met.
Coupled with the lack of people opening product, spikes like this will happen.
I am almost positive it is what happened to Wrenn and Six
All these answers are disturbing and ring true :(
