State of the Program for October 15th, 2021
World Championships: Yuta Takahashi won Worlds this past weekend with Izzet Dragons. With 14 Grand Prix top eights to his name, the long time Faeries player went 0-3 in the draft portion of the event before going undefeated in the Standard portion. Yuta ended up going 10-0 on the weekend in Standard. For World Championship coverage, you can go here!
Artisan Cube: Chris Kronenberger brings the Artisan Cube to MTGO this week. This is a common and uncommon only cube. You can see the card list and archetype information here.
Secret Lairs: The October Super Drop starts on the 18th and features the cards for Stranger Things. It's a 8 card set featuring characters from the show and a clue token. It is foil and non foil. There are some spooky ones too for Halloween and such. We have a lair for the Innistrad Special printing, featuring non basic lands from the first visits to Innistrad and some Mirrodin artifacts lands as well. Liliana, most likely not getting a Signature Spellbook, gets to feature in one, and there are some cards inspired by classic Horror movie posters. I think I got them all, but if not you can check them out here. The sale starts on the 18th.
Banned in Historic: Brainstorm and Tibalt's Trickery were banned in Historic. Memory Lapse was suspended in the format. They decided to do nothing about Standard right now, and did not mention Legacy, a format that is in dire need of help. There are also some cards that are being changed on Arena, but we do not care about those cards here. You can read the article about it here.
Eternal Weekend: Legacy events will be held on Magic Online November 19–21, 2021. Vintage events will be held on Magic Online on the following weekend of November 26–28, 2021.
This is a list of things we have been promised, or we just want to see coming back. Another good source for dates and times is the
calendar and the weekly blog, while the best source for known bugs is the bug blog which appears sporadically on MTGO.com. Not listed, but important: Wizards offers either one or two online MCQs each weekend, with qualifiers for limited MCQs running the days immediately prior to the MCQ.

Magic Online Format Challenges
These are high stakes events that happen every weekend. They cost 30 Tix / 300 play points, and last a number of rounds based on participation (assume 5-8), plus a single elimination Top 8. Details, including prize payouts, are
here. Start times are:
Standard: This is the undefeated World Championship winning list. A lot of discourse on social media is what should Wizards of the Coast do about
Alrund's Epiphany. Previews start for the next set really soon, it comes out next month. I say we do nothing about it!
Historic: It feels like, with no bigger events that Historic is falling to the side like Pioneer did during the pandemic. Well currently during the pandemic. Historic has no direction and is kinda floating along. What's it's purpose? Is it Arena Vintage? Is it what eventually brings Modern to Arena? Does WotC even know?
Legacy: Again more ban discource in social media for a format, and I think that this format actually needs help. Players are protesting the Saturday challenge according to Legacy players on Twitter until Wizards makes a move. I have no idea what they are going to do here.
Modern: Modern feels really healthy and is a lot of fun still.
Pauper: Is
Atog a bigger problem in Pauper than we seem to want to admit? Granted I don't think the format needs any help right now, but maybe the creature needs to be examined the next time there is a ban.
Pioneer: Pioneer right now, seems to be Izzet Phoenix or something so incredibly cool looking that looks fun, but maybe isn't great against Izzet Phoenix.
The Winner's Circle is where I will recognize winners of the past events on MTGO.

Note: all my prices come from the fine folks at
MTGOTraders.com. These are retail prices, and generally the price of the lowest priced, actively traded version. (Prices for some rare promo versions are not updated when not in stock, so I skip those.) You can get these cards at
MTGOTraders.com web store, or from their bots: MTGOTradersBot(#) (they have bots 1-10), CardCaddy and CardWareHouse, or sell cards to MTGOTradersBuyBot(#) (they have buybots 1-4). I have bought cards from MTGOTraders for a decade and a half now, and have never been overcharged or disappointed.
Standard Staples: Just a whole hecking lot of cards to add to the list this week! We dropped some as well, but not nearly as many as we added. It's a pretty large list.

The following is a list of all the non-foil, non-promo cards on MTGO that retail for more than $25 per card. These are the big ticket items in the world of MTGO. The list is interesting, at the least. This is interesting to me because a lot of these cards have been reprinted more than once, and they are still commanding a high price.

The big number is the retail price of a playset (4 copies) of every card available on MTGO. Assuming you bought the least expensive versions available, the cost of owning a playset of every card on MTGO is approximately a number that I cannot figure out still. I have actually asked Pete to do this for me, because Open Office is weird, and I have no idea what I am doing, and I am pretty close to just being a dog in a labcoat.
Nevermind, ignore all of that, Pete got it done for me, because he is just the dang best. The big number this week is $27,155. On October 1st the number was $26,357. We have had a $798 gain.
I've been on my ADHD meds for a full week now. I've noticed, when I am outside that my brain has seemed to slow down and I don't get overwhelmed so quickly. That is a good thing. A bad thing is I am taking upwards of 12 small naps a day before sleeping through the night.
This series is an ongoing tribute to Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg.
