One Wild Ride

Welcome back everyone.  Surprisingly this week I found time to write in the midst of mid-terms and getting ready for a week in New York City.  Luckily I have one last report for you guys, but then I will be out of contact during the Tribal event time-slots and will be looking for a substitute host for at least this coming Saturday.  Maybe I'll get frisky and do some writing on other formats during the bus ride.  Well back to what matters, Tribal Apocalypse takes place every Saturday at 12:30pm EST in /join Tribal.  It is a swiss-style play group for people looking to explore the more unique side of Tribal Classic Wars.

This past event we had a variety of new and old tribes playing in the event.  We even had some old tribes rear the heads from forgotten block formats.  Overall we had ten players show up and played three rounds of swiss.  Overall the Rats won the day, which did pain me a little on the inside.  Mainly because I have tried time and time again to get a Rat deck to work but I have yet to succeed.  Though I always went the hand destruction route.  Our most successful deck of the week was James_McAliney with a MBC Rats decklist this tore up the field on his way to a 3-0 finish.  Other represented tribes are below and include; more rats, elves, vedlaken, and samurai.

Mono Rats Control
3-0 by James_McAliney
Creatures
4 Ravenous Rats
4 Crypt Rats
4 Chittering Rats
3 Skullsnatcher
3 Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni
2 Nezumi Graverobber
20 cards

Other Spells
4 Tendrils of Corruption
4 Hymn to Tourach
4 Damnation
4 Chainer's Edict
16 cards
Lands
18 Swamp
4 Swarmyard
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
24 cards

Chittering Rats

So as you can see all in all there is a pretty good representation of all the colors here except a little light on blue, but that's ok with me.  Now to see what people bring in the following weeks.  I will be honest my favorite part of this event is seeing all the creative decks people bring.  And these past two weeks have really provided me with plenty of ideas.

Worldwake Top 10

Well now that Worldwake has been officially released and made it's way into the tribal format, I just wanted to list what I think are going to be the most effective cards.  Just as a note these are just my ten favorite.  The order is inconsequential.

-This guy is crazy.  Teaming him with the Dual lands or the Shock Lands is always a great idea.  Plus he also works as Llanowar Elves 9-12.  I know I got stomped by Flippers whenever he got this guy in play.

-I can't count the decks I have seen built around this card already.  After having seen both Kraken and Leviathan versions though, I am going to have to throw my support behind the Leviathan.  Being able to drop a Grozoth and then pulling all four of your Inkwell Leviathans for future turns is a powerful play.

-This girl really is that good.  She gives the Kor decks a way to search up their Basilisk Collar or Sword of Fire and Ice on turn 2.  The effectiveness of this card allowing for a toolbox of Equipments is certainly useful to combat the variety of decks you can face.

-I don't think there are many magic players who can honestly say they've never enjoyed casting Last Gasp or Nameless Inversion.  This card is just another version of the classic -3/-3 removal removal spell.  Only with the added plus of fattening any vampires that may be on the board and untapped due to say summoning sickness or not having a good method to attack for a turn.

-Yet another Elf Lord who will eventually make it into a deck.  Maybe the 12 Llanowar Elves.dek will be the place for him.  Scalable army pump is never something to turn your nose up too.

-Allies needed an instant speed trick.  This may be it.  Double-trigger anything at instant speed is great.  Using it when there is a Kazuul Warlord and Turntimber Ranger is just crazy.

Okay so I promised ten.  I lied.  As I continued to make the list I noticed more of the cards in Worldwake serve great purposes, but mostly just as replacements or filler.  None of the other cards really make much of an impact on their related tribes and just aren't as exciting as I think these 6 are.  If you can think of something I overlooked that would be great in tribal feel free to let me know in the comment section below.

Well that is it for this week.  I hope everyone has a great week, I will be in New York City staying near West Central Park.  If you are in the area stop by and introduce yourself.

What ban list does your Tribal PRE use? Cause I thought Extinction was just banned.

On a somewhat related note, I found that the B/R lists on the website have not been updated for the new Tribal changes.

playing soldiers i thought i had a favorable match against James' rats cuz I could get going so fast, but after winning game 1 I was hit with turn 2 + 3 hymn in game 2 and an early hymn in game 3 that discarded the only two lands I had in hand, that was disappointing

i do want to apologize again for the issues, you can ask james i was havin game issues in our matches and then the client crashed before rd 3 and i couldnt get back on.. i hate bein the one to cause issues esp when i feel i had a chance to hit 2-1 :P

Here's my own Top-10 cards by Lord Erman at Wed, 03/03/2010 - 10:40
Lord Erman's picture

Here's my own Top-10 cards for Tribal Wars:

10- Quest for Ula's Temple: Not my cup of tea but I can imagine that it made quite a few people (very) happy.

9- Join the Ranks: Yes yes yes, allies, we know it, next one please!

8- Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs: This one's interesting. Especially because he's also a Warrior. I haven't tried anything yet but I can think of a few decks that might use this one.

7- Dead Reckoning: In some formats this may be useless but not in Tribal Wars. You will always get back a good creature and hit one of theirs. A very good bargain if you'd ask me.

6- Perimeter Captain: He's a human, he's a soldier, he knows how to block and as a matter of fact, he loves to block. A perfect choice for slow decks and/or alternate win decks.

5- Bojuka Bog: As of now you don't have to add anything specific to your deck to fight graveyard manipulation. I know that many people complain about the no-sideboard rule of Tribal Wars, but instead of a sideboard you just have to use this kind of tools to fight specific decks. I would even consider this as a colorless mana source in my non-Black decks.

4- Stoneforge Mystic: Yes, Kor love her but not only them. The Auriok from Mirrodin would also welcome this lady.

3- Abyssal Persecutor: A fantastic card. Demon tribal? Yes please!

2- Manlands: All of them are very useful. I cannot think of a reason why one wouldn't play these if he's playing the correct colors. Having 24 creatures without actually having 24 creatures is excellent, don't you think?

1- Eye of Ugin: Did you see that monster? Isn't it beautiful(!)? Don't you want to play it? Don't you want to "Annihilate" the opponent with it? You do? Then go and get 4 of this right now! Just plain awesomeness.

And that was my personal Top-10.

I have to agree with the list by ShardFenix at Wed, 03/03/2010 - 12:05

I have to agree with the list you have Lord Erman. Though I was looking at cards that actually lended themselves to tribal strategies. Otherwise the Man-Lands would have been number one for me. And the Eldrazi look horribly powerful, it scares me. Though I agree demon and ogre/warrior tribal just got a lot better.

I think Elementals got a huge by ArchGenius at Wed, 03/03/2010 - 12:24

I think Elementals got a huge boost.

Omnath, Wolfbriar Elemental, and Avenger of Zendikar are all elementals and all work very well with Smokebraider. I'm itching to use Incandescent Soulstoke to cheat an Avenger of Zendikar into play followed by a sac land.

Also Kalastria Highborn gets a lot more dangerous when you have access to several free ways to sacrifice Bloodghast. Goblin Bombardment anyone? Or maybe you prefer Greater Gargadon or Spawning Pit.

And my favorite tribe, Shaman, get Dragonmaster Outcast...

There's nothing wrong with it. If there was something wrong with everything I didn't mention, the world would be filled with broken things.

I did forget the Outcast; he by ShardFenix at Wed, 03/03/2010 - 14:05

I did forget the Outcast; he will definitely give a boost late game to shaman who tend to top out at 3/3 it seems.
I don't know if Omnath or the Avenger will help elementals, but I can see Wolfbriar playing some role. On the other hand I do fully expect to see a plant deck in the near future with the Avenger.
Kalastria is tempting to me, but for some reason I don't know if she will make it. I originally thought she was a Cabal Archon for vampires but seeing the requirements make her slightly weaker though still good.

I was thinking that Dragonmaster gives Shaman another answer to Moat.

Speaking of Kalastria and Bloodghast, by the way, is Buried Alive banned in Tribal Apocalypse?

no most certainly not by ShardFenix at Wed, 03/03/2010 - 16:09

Could a RW Elemental build featuring Braid of Fire and Obsidian Fireheart have any chance at completing?

You could use Enlightened Tutor to get Braid or possibbly Moat.

I have never really tried tribal before ... just seemed like it could be fun.

Braid is a bit slow, at least against the faster tribes. Then again, using it to fuel an upkeep Starstorm or similar instant mass removal has potential.
