TRIBAL APOCALYPSE

Ponder

Ponderings

Welcome readers.  As I write I am sitting in my dorm room with professional wrestling going on in the background.  Yes, I'm a grown man that still watches wrestling.  It's not as good as it once was, but it's one of the few things I still find intriguing that are shown on TV.  I know it's been a while since my last article, but I have been busy with exams from the first session of summer classes and just hit a rut Magic wise.  I haven't been in the mood lately for much card-slinging outside of still providing the Tribal Event for everyone to play in and then hanging out in the Auction room.  Currently I'm just stuck in a deckbuilding rut.  Hopefully some of you are too, and we can all get something out of the following decklists.

WEEK OF 6/12/10

This week was a normal 1v1 event.  We had an 'off' week without many participants so I only have three decks to show, but each of them is well thought out and a testament to the players ingenuity.

Well ladies and gentleman, here it is the first Wall deck in the history of Tribal Apocalypse.  I'm a little shocked at the lack of Wall of Omens and Wall of Reverence, though the deck did work.  He went 2-1 in the event.  But then stopping people from attacking with large walls and Moat always helps.  Oh yeah, and there are Planeswalkers.   6 of them to be exact.  They are some good I hear.  Though luckily there was not as much red as normal in the meta.  All the walls in the world won't stop a Lightning Bolt.

Yes I picture Kumagoro as a half-metal man who can perform alchemy...look at his picture from last week as Awesome-o.  But joking aside this is a pretty scary Golem deck.  The Lodestone Golem really kills development speeds of opposing decks and then Kuma erases anything you do get in play with All Is Dust.  The Brass Herald is the "lord" of golems and about every single other tribe in existence that does not have a specific lord already.

And here we are with the champion of that week.  A U/B Myr deck.  Myr is a tribe I have always looked at but never really figured anything out personally.  Obviously the Show and Tell are for Emrakul, the Aeons Torn shenanigans, but personally I'm like if you got him, run him.  There really is no downside to running the 15-mana monstrosity, especially when 40% of your creatures tap for more mana anyways.  The deck served him well with an overall record of 6-2 in games.

Tribal 2HG 6-19-10

Well as you can tell we obviously went with a 2hg format and in some sot of odd way the teams ended up basically along national lines.  So in the finals we ended up with the top two teams being Team UK and Team US...or US to the best of my knowledge it was just kind of a nickname I gave them.  Luckily unlike the World Cup this Team UK did not embarrass England by letting the game roll past their fingers.  But first with the second place decks.

Team US shared a color with white, and overall their decks were well matched with Fliebana playing the board control while JHoke was the beatdown with his cheap creatures.  In my matchup with them it was very very tough to keep any number of creatures in play for more than a  turn or two.  The Exalted triggers from Sigiled Paladin were certainly an issue in trying to make decent trades during the attack steps.  The only issue with JHoke's deck would be to include at least a Sejiri Steppe or two in order to have a way to protect the Knight of the Reliquary.  The main threat of Fliebana's deck surprisingly is the 4mana common Guardian of the Guildpact.  It's shocking when faced with him how few multi-colored cards some people actually play.  The decks were great at stopping my team's decks of Wurms and Elves.  However like all others they feel beneath the might of Team UK.

Deck 2 of Team UK by Melissafey
Creatures
2 Spearbreaker Behemoth
3 Woolly Thoctar
4 Cliffrunner Behemoth

4 Jungle Shrine
7 Forest
4 Mountain

Godsire

Two completely different decks, form one nigh-unbeatable combo here.  The strength of Moat+AJ's superior air strength+Mayael's Aria+Mel's supersized beasts=a nice little time bomb.  I saw a couple matches end off of Mayael's Aria while they just played defensviely.  Mel played some awesome creatures after my own heart like Meglonoth, Cliffrunner Behemoth, and Spellbreaker Behemoth.  I've always been a Naya mage at heart.  Which by the way is far easier than saying a Boros/Gruul/Selesnya mage.(Thanks for simplifying that Wizards).  AJ "The Lord of Moat" (i kid, i kid) had a great deck of mono-white Angels.  No matter when I see it in play Akroma, Angel of Wrath is always a beating and Pristine Angel is very close being untouchable as long as you hold an instant.  It's even better when those instants are Swords to Plowshares.

Onto future events

You know people say writing is therapeutic...I do feel slightly less rut-trapped after this article.  Not sure why, but I do.  Also, White Collar is on TV now, and that is quite possibly one of the greatest shows around, but I love all of the USA networks shows.  But you aren't sill here to learn about my viewing habits.  You are here if you are interested in future events.  To be honest I still enjoy the 1v1 format of Tribal Apocalypse.  However, I want to hear from you guys.  This PRE has almost been around for a year now and I want to know what you would change if anything.  Give me your flames and your praises, your ideas and your criticisms below in the comments.  Only you can help shape the future of Tribal Apocalypse.  Don't forget please join us every Saturday at 12:30pm EDTin /join tribal to play.  Hope to see you all there.

Doing a non random 2hg would by endless at Fri, 06/25/2010 - 03:08

Doing a non random 2hg would be really cool at some point, but you'd need a lot of lead in time to craft evil decks. It would be maybe too exclusive though, unless you solicited for names of people looking for partners and posted them weeks before.

I for one stopped enjoying by Paul Leicht at Fri, 06/25/2010 - 09:09

I for one stopped enjoying the TWA awhile ago. I can't really name the cause but it just seemed perhaps a little like a double standard being applied. "Don't Bring Tier-1 decks!", "do bring competitive decks!" etc. And then like yourself I get into deck building ruts. I have built many of the possible archetypes for the format and very few decks perform the way Antired, Nayawizards (or elves), and Sphinges did, so I haven't brought them. I have my own version of the wall deck that does fairly well in casual when I bring it out but being a wall deck it is boring. I like EN's theme of Mythic added to it to make it something more. Though I have to wonder where his Gideon is.

It is difficult to find a deck that one likes that is consistent against a wide open field and is also not horribly broken in a way that gets evil stares from all participants.

I would like to see the TWA be more friendly than it is. But I think it should drop the bannings. I don't think they work. As several people say they would not. To properly fix the format it would have to either be neutered or given back sideboarding. I would love to try tribal wars with sideboarding but as has been said in the past it would be an impossible task to enforce it. Age old dilemma, no real solutions. Just show up, bring a deck you want to play and hope you don't get paired with match ups from hell and you get opponents who know how to say "Hello" and "Good luck" without relying on the damned macro. (Yes if the players were more social that would help.)

Grats to Mel and AJ. I am not surprised that they won.

I thought gideon was above my already too high mana curve. I also thought he didn't have a game winning ultimate, and without the ability to attack, I thought he wasn't as good as other options.

Yeah I can see that. Though he is an absolute beast with walls.dec. A serious house to any creature deck so amazing in twc.

I had considered... by Element H at Fri, 06/25/2010 - 12:19

I had considered using Sejiri Steppe but honestly, IMO it's only useful as a way to get around a mono colored blocker. For example, they have StP in hand, I lay down steppe and they hit the target while steppe is on the stack. Or they cast it first and I can't lay my land down in response. It just didn't seem like it would fit well with the deck and I'd just end up with a land that comes into play tapped. I admit I didn't play test the deck very much though, because I had intended on using a Mono Red build all the way up until the start of the match.

Overall I've had a great time playing Classic Tribal. I only started playing this format a few weeks ago from a suggestion of a friend and I have enjoyed using my deck building skills in new and different ways. Being a Classic/Legacy player, the switch to using a majority of creatures has been against my play style but it's good to branch out a bit.

Thanks to Shard for holding the events and thanks to all the other players who showed up.

Steppe is a decent slow by Paul Leicht at Fri, 06/25/2010 - 12:36

Steppe is a decent slow protection card. It isn't a miracle worker. Ruin Ghost helps it a lot but even so as you say multicolored decks are less susceptible.

The Sejiri Steppe is ussualy used as a defense option rather then an agro option. You simply tap the Kight of Reliquary to get a Steppe in responce to it being targeted or while blocking with it.

Golem Deck by Jacobs at Fri, 06/25/2010 - 12:24

I run a casual version of the golem deck, but I think it is better than the one that was posted. Why you ask.....4x Sculpting Steel.

I love ramping into Lodestone Golem turn 3 followed by double Sculpting Steel turn 4. You could easily cut the weaker golems to make room for them. Additionally, the mana base seems wrong on the posted list, but I won't say with certainty, as I have not tried it.

wall choices by endless at Fri, 06/25/2010 - 19:05
endless's picture

I went against wall of omens because I was very weak against flyers. My opting out of wall of reverence was purely money based. I realized I'll almost certainly never play this deck again once the tourney is over. So with that in mind, the 8 ticket cost for a play set of a card that's only good in a format I don't play in was a bad investment.

RE: Bannings:

I don't think we should drop the bannings. They help keep the unfun decks out. Do we really need more dredge decks without the ability to sideboard against them? Do we need goblin lacky fueled tier 1 legacy goblin decks? I think the tournament is better for their exclusion. You complained about the deck power being too high, I can't see how having those cards back in would make it a more casual field. Every week I play I try and bring a new deck that brings a new style. Yes the decks I bring are often high priced, but they need the cards to help make the deck viable. The deck I'm bringing in this week is another new one the format I hope.

the reason I stopped coming by JustSin at Sun, 06/27/2010 - 19:39

the reason I stopped coming around is basically because of a lack of time, I really wish I could have made the 2hg... I spent lots of time testing through some ideas to bring in and give a tribal deck an edge because of 2hg... but any ways... I did find it get really boring because I started playing mono red gobos, mono red eles, mono red eles... red red red red red red... hell I was even running boros to death in any number of ways, gobos, spirits, giants... just got stale
