Oh you are all so lucky this week I'm going to cover the events over Christmas and the New Year and they are very exciting. You thought you just had to prepare for the Endangered Tribal event well I have something that's going to stretch your deck building skills even further.

First up is the Christmas special event that is going to be taking part on the December the 18th. This will be the last event of 2010 as the following Saturday will be Christmas day and I have no intention of running an event on that day that's for sure. I most likely will be online though as I have nothing better to do so you can always catch my in the /join tribal room for a few games if you need a fix.

The special event on the 18th has two parts to it the first is the free gifts I will be giving out. I will have twenty of these gifts and to secure yourself one of these you will need to be one of the first 20 players to type reg in the /join tribal room after I announce that I'm taking registrations for that weeks event. The prizes will be given out in the order of the reg's in the chat room so the first gets the best prize and then it goes down after that to a few silly prizes.

I really did mean I'm giving away gifts this is the order of the prizes. It could change if any of these go out of stock or sky rocket in price before I purchase them.

The second part is the main event, this week all decks that go 3-0 or greater in the colours of Naya  receive an extra prize of Tamanoa. These decks can be made up of the three colours so for example you could use Lightning Bolt, Giant Growth and Swords to Plowshares to comply with the challenge.

There will also be a door prize as well of four Mitotic Slimes.

RedRedRedRed

You may be wondering could things get any more exciting than that well the answer is yes they can as the first event in the New Year will not be taking part on the usual Saturday the 1st of January instead it will be on the following day Sunday the 2nd of January at the usual time. Now I can imagine there are a few disappointed faces out there as this is the same time as the BYOS event which I know a lot of you also play in as well.

Now this is where unexpected things can happen I was talking to bluedragon123 about event schedules over Christmas and I came up with an idea which you may have already seen coming. That idea is to combine our two events and run them as one for this weekend only. Yes you read that correctly myself Flippers_Giraffe and bluedragon123 will be hosting a joint event on the 2nd of January.

The format of the event will be (you need to pay attention here) BYOS Tribal, note that BYOS comes first which means that we tribal players will be playing under the BYOS rules which I will cover shortly as it does have an effect on what cards can be used. Your deck must be 100% legal under the BYOS constructed rules and be legal under the Tribal Legacy format as well. For this event we will be using the BYOS banned list only so Iona, Mistress of the Sky will have her chance to show you her powers once again.

The event will be sponsored by www.mtgotraders.com the event structure is yet to be decided as in swiss or swiss with a top eight it all depends if me or bluedragon123 is running that side of things. I will be adding my usual door prize as well which for this week is a playset of Protean Hydra's.

Now for those of you that don't know the BYOS rules here they are (written by bluedragon123)

WHAT IS BUILD YOUR OWN STANDARD?
BYOS is a wacky, fun, and completely open deck building format.  Each player chooses any two blocks and any one core set and builds their deck from that, essentially creating their own standard environment.  This allows for the format to have something for everyone.  Standard players can bring a current standard legal deck and easily compete, while extended players can add their favorite tools, and classic players can use their oldest cards while not forcing the power level to go through the roof.

The blocks don't need to be consecutive, so this allows a deck-building centrally minded player to mix and match blocks from across time periods to build something uniquely different.  Ever wonder what Mirridon and Alara block Standard would be like?  Or the two tribal blocks, Onslaught and Lorwyn?  BYOS allows you to explore these options with every deck-builder having the same restrictions.

BYOS also allows for you to play your old favorite standard decks that have rotated out only to be left by the wayside.  Remember Dragonstorm back in Ravnica/Time Spiral STD?  If it's your type of deck then it's completely viable here along with many other old STD decks.

As you can imagine with all the possibilities it might be a bit hard to decide what deck you want to play.  If you're having trouble getting started building a deck I've collected the top 4 metagame from each of our events thus far.  We've had a wide array of decks from normal standard to force of will decks that have been thrashed by 10 dollar decks!

Where did the format come from?  It was first used in the Magic 2007 Invitational.  However, after several events of trying things out we've given the rules a full overhaul.  So check out the banned list and the set legality sections below.

BANNED LIST

  • Amulet of Quoz
  • Atog
  • Cranial Plating
  • Disciple of the Vault
  • Demonic Consultation

(A lot of these cards will most likely not be legal in Tribal Legacy but I wanted to post the full list for you FG)

SET LEGALITY AND SPECIAL SETS
Set legality and proxy rules have been set up to keep the format as close to paper printed legalities as possible while also including only the 'modernly designed' sets per the original rules.

  • Blocks from Ice age and up are legal.
  • Core sets from 5th edition and up are legal.
  • MED sets CANNOT be chosen for either a core set or block.
  • Dual decks CANNOT be chosen for either a core set or block.
  • Other special sets CANNOT be chosen for either a core set or block.
  • The Ice Age block consists of Ice Age, Alliances, and Coldsnap.
  • Homelands can be chosen as it's own block.
  • Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are considered one block.
  • Zendikar/Worldwake and Rise of Eldrazi are considered one block.

Proxies are allowed in that

you can choose a paper printing of a block or core set and still be able to use cards as "proxies" from the online special sets.  As with any format you can also proxy a different edition of a card that is legal in your sets.

So for Example

You could choose Ice Age block to use  the MED Force of Will.
OR You could choose Masques block and use the DD2 Daze.
OR You could choose M10 and use a MED Lightning bolt.

If you have any questions about this event then ask me or bluedragon123. If you want some examples of past BYOS decks then I suggest you check out some of mine and Lord Erman's articles found below, I've also added the links for all the top 4 deck lists for each season captured by bluedragon123.

I hope you are looking forward to this as much as me it's going to be a really fun and challenging event, BYOS Tribal has never been done before so the format is wide open for idea's. I'll look at some deck lists closer to the event and show you some of the possibilities. BYOS players a quick reminder so you don't get caught out, tribal decks don't have sideboards.

This week the new banned and restricted list went up on the Wizards forum ready for when Masters Edition 4 comes out in January. There was one addition to the list that came out of nowhere and is very unexpected. This is the banning of Moat in Tribal Legacy. From my point of view it's a card that doesn't need to be banned, for a starter there are other cards that have a similar effect that remain in the format like Magus of the Moat and Teferi's Moat. I believe there is still time for Wizards to change their mind and unban this card before the December update. If you feel as strongly as myself about not banning the card I would suggest you add a comment to the post from WotC_Lee found here

WhiteWhiteWhiteWhite

Next week I'm going to have a look at what Masters Edition 4 has to offer us tribal players seeing as the set has been spoiled already.

A few other things this Saturday is Endangered Tribal week and the following creature types are banned Angels, Allies, Elves, Faeries, Goblins, Merfolk, Elementals, Soldiers, Zombies, Slivers, Humans and Vampires. Also the /join tribal room is now open all the time for players to meet up and play outside of the Tribal Apocalypse event or ask for deck advice or just hang out with fellow tribal minded players.

This week I decided to run Jellyfish a rather unusual tribe but it's a deck I've wanted to play for a long time especially since the release of Venser, the Sojourner. It's quite a control deck it starts off with Wall of Tears to bounce back early creatures to their controllers hand until the Jellyfish arrive on the scene. Man-o'-War is another source of rebound and with Venser you can bounce it every turn to return a creature to your opponent's hand. This quickly powers up Venser for his ultimate ability.

The other Jellyfish in the deck are Guard Gomazoa which zeros all combat damage done against it and it flys so can stop most creatures. Dormant Gomazoa comes into play tapped it only costs 1BlueBlue for a 5/5 but you need to find a way to untap it for this I use an old card Jandor's Saddlebags. Gomazoa is another blocker which is good at dealing with large threats in its own way and lastly we have Esperzoa which is a good card early on if you can pay the upkeep which is why I included some of the artifact lands from Mirrodin.

Lastly the other cards I've not mentioned yet are Back to Basics which is an excellent card for stopping all those decks with dual lands. We may be running non basics with the artifact lands but it doesn't affect us much as we will be returning them to our hand with Esperzoa. Bribery is another nice addition to the deck as we don't have any creatures for the late game instead relying on Venser's ultimate ability to clear the way. The last card is for stealing creatures Vedalken Shackles.

2-1

Aleister brings the cats this week to add another victory to their belt. This version uses Ranger of Eos to search for a hand full of cats in the late game and also includes a very large cat in the form of Chameleon Colossus. The removal is pretty standard for a cat deck but these cats have Elspeth, Knight-Errant to back them up, so you might see some flying cats if your lucky or unlucky if you're on the receiving end.

Demonic Forces
by AJ_Impy
Creatures
4 Grinning Demon
4 Yukora, the Prisoner
4 Kagemaro, First to Suffer
4 Stronghold Overseer
4 Reiver Demon
4 Pestilence Demon
24 cards

Other Spells
4 Wayfarer's Bauble
4 Mutilate
4 Consume Spirit
12 cards

Lands
19 Swamp
4 Cabal Coffers
1 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
24 cards

AJ brings out his demonic forces this week. AJ seems to be building a reputation in the tribal events of the person you don't really want to be facing in the first round as you never know what's going to be hitting you. This week I played AJ first and my Jellyfish were turned into sushi by the demons.

The deck uses Wayfarer's Bauble to help speed up the mana base and then one of the four Cabal Coffers comes into play and the demons are let lose. There's some really heavy hitters in the deck in the form of Reiver Demon which also acts as a board clearer along with Pestilence Demon. Another source of demonic removal is Kagemaro, First to Suffer which is a very nasty card.

Speaking of removal the deck also includes Mutilate which can take out any creature as long as you have more swamps than its toughness, Mutilate instead of destroying creatures gives all creatures -1/-1 for each swamp in play.

Aryxon continues tinkering with his elves again this week. This time Aryxon is using Elvish Guidance to power out a ton of Centaurs through Centaur Glade. I saw some amazing games played by Aryxon where there were loads of Elves and Centaurs in play.

The elves keep going 2-1 but I haven't seen one make it all the way through for a win in a long time now.

Cruel_Hellraiser brings out the constructs this week and they prove they still have the power and take him to a 2-1 finish. The deck uses a very nice combination of Triskelion and Grafted Exoskeleton to poison the opponent to death by pinging them, the deck uses the famous construct Steel Overseer to add counters back on so it never runs out. I also like the use of Chimeric Mass with the amount of mana the Cruel_Hellraiser's deck has when it comes into play its very large.

Kumagoro42 brought giants this week and took them for a good run with a 2-1 victory. I think there is a conspiracy going on with Kumagoro42 and AJ_Impy to see how many tribes they can get on the table in the statistics section before I have to find another way to display the tribes, keep it up its nice to see all these different tribes.

Kumagoro42 uses Stinkdrinker Daredevil to help power out the giants in the deck and then its clobbering time. First up is Brion Stoutarm and Blind-Spot Giant followed by the giant lord Sunrise Sovereign and Borderland Behemoth. The deck has some good anti weenie spells in the form of Pyroclasm and Rolling Thunder.

The Amulet of Vigors if you haven't noticed are there so Kumagoro42's lands don't come into play tapped saving him a turn before they can be used.

NetHwarang decided to bring an Astral Slide deck this week with a human base for its tribe. The runes are a clever addition there's one of each so you will hopefully have the desired colour vs your opponent's deck and the rest can be cycled to Astral Slide. These can be brought back from your graveyard with Auramancer

The deck has Pentarch Paladin and Mangara of Corondor for removal and Soul Warden to keep your life points up. Notice that a lot of the lands are also cycle able as well.

Elves on the Run
by Kurrant
Creatures
1 Birds of Paradise
4 Fyndhorn Elves
4 Jagged-Scar Archers
4 Llanowar Elves
4 Timberwatch Elf
4 Heedless One
4 Wellwisher
4 Viridian Zealot
29 cards

Other Spells
4 Elvish Promenade
1 Fracturing Gust
4 Gilt-Leaf Ambush
4 Overrun
13 cards

Lands
18 forest
18 cards

Kurrant went a different route with elves and decided to go for the beat down approach. The elves build up for the deadly combination of Heedless One and Timberwatch Elf and if you don't see these you can always drop down an Overrun to boost your elves to epic proportions. It's a very nice straight forward elf deck, it is suspect to mass removal though but the Viridian Zealot gives the deck an out vs Moat which is always a good choice.

3-0

fliebana managed to take allies all the way this week to the final but sadly fliebana didn't have time to play the match so the victory went to the next deck I will be showing you.

fliebana's decks has all sorts of tricks up its sleeve. As well as the allies which are a great tribe similar to slivers fliebana brought some very powerful cards to aid them. The first is Sun Titan which can recover fallen allies and Oblivion Rings where needed. We also have our second sighting of Elspeth, Knight-Errant this week as well, she is turning out to be a popular lady now her price has fallen due to rotation, it's currently really low at $7.50 a bargain for sure. Her price may go back up when Extended season starts. I also like the inclusion of Mimic Vat but didn't get a chance to see it in action in the game I played vs fliebana.

Grand Champion

The grand champion this week is a new player to Tribal Apocalypse ynohtna123456 who brings a dredging Wizard deck. The main idea behind the deck is to keep discarding cards to bring back a huge Sutured Ghoul, The Ghoul when it comes into play will hopefully be enchanted with Dragon Breath giving it haste to take the win that turn. It is a very fast deck once all the pieces of the combo come together. It's nice to see a dredge deck again as people don't fear the graveyard as much as they should do at this moment in time.

I also want to mention Meddling Mage as well which is a fantastic card in any format. It won't always be good in the first round but the next two and it could shut down any threats to ynohtna123456 's graveyard antics.

This table is to show the tribes that have landed in the prizes since the 9th of October 2010. The left hand side is the tribe and along the top is the number of rounds won.

Tribe 2 3 4
Ally 1 1
Angel 1 1 2

On top of the in game banned list the following cards are also banned in Tribal Apocalypse events, if there are additional cards that are deemed too powerful they will be added to this list, so please keep an eye out. If you are caught using any of the below cards in an event then you will forfeit your match and will be removed from the tournament.

Great read as always!

It's a great idea to combine Tribal Wars with BYOS! Maybe there is a chance to see other combinations as well ;-)

@Flippers_Giraffe:

You forgot to mention the meanest interaction on my deck, due to the way that Mangara is worded, I can slide her out in response to her ability, allowing me to remove all my opponent's permanents, starting with the lands, so they get quickly locked up by a Ghostly Prision (In fact this is how I beat Kurrant's elves, there was no way on earth I could have slided so many opposing creatures).

Also, I would like to let you know that there seems to have been a mistake with the prizes. I recieved a 3 dollars gift certificate, when according to the event description I should have recieved 2 dollars. I suspected that maybe my prize and the event's winner prize got mixed up, but Nagarjuna posted at the wizards forums, and he got 4 dollars. So in the end, I'm really confused :-p

The prizes are correct for this weekends event as we played four rounds of swiss you can see the updated prize structure in the wizards group http://community.wizards.com/tribalapocalypse

Note I may be changing the prize structure again for 8-20 players in the near future as I dont want to be paying out more credits than there are players.

As this article was delayed there is also something else that you need to be aware of which is that the Tribal Apocalypse articles will now be going monthly rather than weekly.

Any questions let me know and please use the group http://community.wizards.com/tribalapocalypse as that will be my main point of contact with the player base between articles. It currently has the schedule, banned list and payout structure. I will also try and add the stats there as well depends on how well the forum handles it.

Is there a reason why the articles will be monthly? If it's because of time issues, maybe someone else could continue weekly event coverage. I have to say that although I can't participate in these events, I nevertheless like reading about the format and will miss the weekly articles. ;_;

Have no fear I have a cunning plan and I intend to bring you other articles in between the Tribal Articles (although these Tribal articles may contain more than tribal content going forwards). Moving them to monthly gives me a lot more prep time for this and the other articles I will be bringing you in the future.

It's all very exciting and when you see what I have planned for the future I hope it's something you will enjoy reading as well.

If not I have a back up plan as well.

Another great event report,

I've been hoping to make one of these events one of these days, maybe next weekend or the one after since I'll finally have some more time.

Jellyfish are pretty funny as a tribe, such weird creatures. More and more of them are out there in the oceans as overfishing has killed their natural competitors.

The joint event will be in late January, so plenty of time to find a good build for it =)

BYOS Tribal sounds a lot fun. ONS/LRW/M11 Elves and UZ/ZEN/M11 Goblins are obvious choices but I'm sure there will be better decks than those. I'm looking forward to that event! My Walls deck did very well in the last event so I may be tweaking it for this event as well.
