World-Wakin' Meta-Shakin'

Welcome back faithful followers.  We had a fairly large turnout this past week with 14 players, if it had to do with the weather on the eastern seaboard of the States I'm praying for snow more often.  Overall it was quite interesting, however two tribal powerhouses made it into the finals.  Also this week I will look at what I think Worldwake brings to the format.  As a disclaimer, I'm more a Johnny-Vorthos than anything, so if I miss something feel free to point it out in the comments.  If you are interested in playing sometime, Tribal Apocalypse takes place every weekend on Saturdays at 12:30pm EST.  Just log-in and go to /join Tribal to find out more.

Tourney Report

Overall the tourney this week was great.  With fourteen players there were plenty of different tribes on display.  A few of the newer tribes that have not yet seen play were Kor, Archers, and non-Combo dragons.  Unfortunately at the end of the day, three of the most popular tribes in magic should with a fairly inclusive one.  We had Warriors, Goblins, Elves, and Merfolk.  Unfortunately due to school work and such I have not been able to track down all the top 4 lists as I normally do, so if LordErman And Justsin would like to comment their lists that would be great.  I do however have the second place list and what I believe is the correct first place list.

Almost Easy

34 cards

Other Spells
4 Chain Lightning
4 Lightning Bolt

As you can see I went for the straight-up Pauper Goblin deck.  This deck has been just as dominant in testing for tribal as it is in pauper.  I finally got an event to test it in when an odd number of players showed up.  All of my matches were I believe over in quick 2-0's.  Unfortunately I do believe my decision to go pauper cost me the event.  O_Irish_Laddie showed up for the first time with a fish deck.  He proceeded to beat me or angrily wave fins at me into the ground...whatever it is fish do.  Here is his list as best as I can figure.

Thanks to everyone for making this one of the best weeks we have had.  Congratulations to Irish!  I hope everyone...EVERYONE...comes back this  week.

Worldwake

For a small set I believe this set offers a large number of possibilities for Tribal play.  And there is a lot to cover so lets get started and I will be doing only one or two colors a week until the set is released do to some colors having much more than others.

Admonition Angel  To start with we have a 6/6 Flyer for only 6 mana.  Right off the bat I'm intrigued.  She also falls perfectly behind Baneslayer Angel or Battlegrace Angel depending on your budget.  But there is more!  Her Landfall ability is awesome.  Lets see, play a land and get an Oblivion RIng?  Seriously?  Yeah with no protection she dies easily, but so does everything else for the most part and we play with them.  I think Admonition Angel isn't a question of will she see play?  But rather when and how good is she?  Personally I'm feeling Angel Reanimator.  Turn one Chrome Mox and Orzhov Signet, turn two Buried Alive, turn three Patriarch's Bidding**?  Bring out Admonition Angel, Iona, Shield of Emeria, and Angel of Despair?  GG sir GG.

Fledgling Griffin- Maybe not a beast but I have always wanted to build a Griffin Deck and this sometimes flying bear gives it a better early creature than the tribe has ever had.  Though you may want your first land to be Kabira Crossroads since it is still a slower tribe I think.

Kor Firewalker  Definitely a missing piece from Kor decks.  My first round with Goblins this past week was against Kor.  If this guy was in that deck then I would have been very very hardpressed to get the win.  With the amount of red in tribal he will easily be a four-of in every deck that can fit his tribes.

Loam LionWell Kird Ape has certainly always been a powerful guy no one questions that.  With a few cat decks having made appearances already on the tribal scene, "Cat Monkey" is certainly going to join those decks.  With a Temple Garden or Savannah, he is automatically a better turn 1 play than Jungle Lion or Savannah Lions.  Not to mention either dual land can also allow for a turn 1 Qasali Ambusher and make a turn 2 Qasali Pridemage simple.

Sejiri Merfolk  Sadly, this is all blue had that really stuck out to me.  Luckily it's really good.  Even in mono-blue this thing is a house.  Simply run out Tundra or Hallowed Fountain and you get the benefit without harassing your manabase, plus you can run Swords to Plowshares now as well.  Just saying, not bad.  I think this will find room in some of the more free flowing fish-decks that don't exactly follow the tourney line.

Honorable U/W Mentions:

Celestial Colonnadewww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Celestial_Colonnade.html and Friends- Obviously a dual land that can also become a fatty is good.  There is one for each allied color pair.  They are strictly better than the Refuges of Zendikar.  Though my two favorite would have to be Creeping Tar Pit and Raging Ravine.

Apex Hawkswww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Apex_Hawks.html- Well as a 2/2 Flyer for 3 it is not too impressive.  However its a good mana sink and never a horrible top deck...will it make a deck? doubtful but I like it.

Archon of Redemptionwww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Archon_of_Redemption.html- Well with changelings I guess it is now possible to make an Archon deck....though why you would bother is beyond me.

Kitesail Apprenticewww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Kitesail_Apprentice.html- He is good, but does Kor have room for another 1/1 that is only good if equipped?

Lightkeeper of Emeriawww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Lightkeeper_Of_Emeria.html- Another angel, with a kicker that will keep you alive a little longer, but its only a 2/4...I can't say its strong enough when you could just run Exalted Angel, Battlegrace Angel, or Baneslayer Angel if you want lifegain though.

Marsh Threaderwww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Marsh_Threader.html- An anti-black Cliff Threader, the Cliff Threader does not see play why would Marsh Threader.

Perimeter Captainwww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Perimeter_Captain.html- I like it.  It negates two attacks a turn basically.  Multiples can wreck even more.  Against a tribe like Goblins this would be amazing in soldiers.

Stoneforge Mysticwww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Stoneforge_Mystic.html- Is good.  Buy it for tribal, keep it for the next season of standard when lights comes out.

Quest for Ula's Templewww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Quest_for_Ulas_Temple.html- To be honest, we have enough Kraken to make this work.  With a combination of spells like Ponder, Brainstorm, Serum Visions, and Halimar Depths...it might not be too hard.  I know I will at least try it once depending on its price.

Calcite Snapperwww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Calcite_Snapper.html- Everyone is in love with this guy, but for us, turtles have no shot. Not even "convertible turtles."

Goliath Sphinxwww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Goliath_Sphinx.html- 7 mana for an 8/7 flyer isn't bad.  But Sphinx have better options in my mind.

Horizon Drakewww.mtgotraders.com/store/WWK_Horizon_Drake.html- One of these days I'm going to make my Shrieking Drake/Door of Destinies deck.  He will probably be in it.

Well those are just a few I'm looking forward too.  Now you may think "Hey Fenix, you missed a few obvious cards...."  That is true, however at this point, Allies are looking to be extremely high-powered and since they are in all five colors, you can look forward to an all ally week of reviews.  To be honest white is fairly impressive so far.  Blue is weaksauce.  But as a notably weak creature color its to be expected.  Merfolk may be the best blue has, but it's list is so tight that new cards are tough to fit in.  Next week I will look at both black and red cards coming out soon.

Well friends, that is all I have for you this week.  Thanks for reading, and I hope to see you all Saturday.

-ShardFenix

**- Think the mana would be right on this combo but I'm bad at math.

I should note that I beat Archers round 1 of that tourney and lost to Irish round 2 game 3 by not drawing a Noxious Ghoul for 10 turns. (Yes I was playing Bidding Zombies. But with a twist of +White for control cards and Tidehollow Sculler.)

For the most part Im not really up to measuring WWK until I play with it. I will say the catmonkey looks great for gw or naya cats in tribal. Admonition Angel being a mythic rare will be expensive which may lead some people to want to build around her. I think she is a bit too problematic to be good but time will tell.

Anowan, the ruin sage seems like a potentially strong card for tribal. Abyssing them every turn while leaving your guys alone. Obviously, three toughness is his weakness, but I suspect he's strong enough to give a go.

Allies also got a decent shot in the arm, 'though i still don't see them being really competitive.

If I could afford a duals/fetches manabase, I'd be very tempted to run a naya-cats list.

i think anowon is good too by ShardFenix at Tue, 02/09/2010 - 09:17

I've been playing with a Krakens based "KaBoom" deck that would love to have that Ula's quest in it. Krakens are a cast iron behemoth to actually, y'know... cast.

Hey Scartore, you and I are on the same page. AJImpy and I have been messing with my KaBoom deck that uses Leviathons. I would love to see your decklist so we could compare notes. Right now, I've had the deck for about 2 years, it's fun to play, but it very rarely wins or does anything productive. When it does win, it wins big, but on the other side, when it loses, it just gets stomped.

Not that goblins need any help, but they get Basilisk Collar which is simply amazing on a Sparksmith or Goblin Sharpshooter

thats true. I keep toying by ShardFenix at Tue, 02/09/2010 - 11:03

thats true. I keep toying with moving my goblins out of pauper but i love the reactions when opponents realize that i am playing with all commons

Unfortunately just yesterday by Lord Erman at Tue, 02/09/2010 - 14:08

Unfortunately just yesterday I did a big cleaning and deleted many .dec lists including that deck too. But as far as I remember, it was something like this:

26 Lands
4x Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle
4x Stomping Ground
5x Forest
13x Mountain

20 Creatures
4x Bloodbraid Elf
4x Oracle of Mul Daya
4x Elvish Visionary
4x Farhaven Elf
4x Wood Elves

14 Other Spells
4x Lightning Bolt
4x Harrow
3x Expedtion Map
3x Scapeshift

I'm sure that the creatures and other spells are correct but can't remember the lands.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: There were a few Terramorphic Expanses but can't remember how many.

While certainly better than the Refuges, the WW duals aren't strictly better. They are strictly better than the Invasion uncommon duals, though. (As are the Refuges and the M10 duals)

im going to say creatures by ShardFenix at Tue, 02/09/2010 - 16:27

im going to say creatures that dodge all sorcery removal and dont take up deck slots are better than one point of life. That one life point is normally rather insignificant in the long run where as a 4/4 flyer that can never be wrathed/hundreds of other sorcery speed removal options can on occasion win the game by itself.
