This is the intro, it introduces my article. What is it introducing? The premise for a brand new MTGO only theme deck that must contain the following cards:
Da Goal -
The goal is a completed preconstructed deck, obviously, but what's the catch? I'm glad you asked! Here's the catch: Let's make it PDC legal. Why? Because this golden puppy is going to cost less than the typical 12.99! That's right, we're buildin' a budget deck! A special, MTGO only, budget deck. And as such, I'd like to give a shout out to Chris Romeo, Ben Bleiweiss, Jay Moldenhaur-Salazar, The New Guy, Hollow0n3, TharionWind, and all the other Budget/Pauper players out there (that I've forgotten) who have done so much work in this arena over the years. "Standing on the shoulders of giants" doesn't even come close to covering the amount you all have inspired the Magic scene. Okay, name dropping and accolades out of the way, let's get back to business! The goal is a PDC deck, and the things we need to accomplish come in two stages. Stage one is the name. Due to Wizard's internal thing-a-majigs (yeah, that's the technical term), we're going to need to have deck names to forward on pretty quickly. The second stage is the actual deck contents. Of course the two stages will be largely tied together... the name is influenced by the contents and the contents generally fit the name... making one without the other is tricky so feel free to have a rough decklist in mind when you're coming up with the name if it helps.
Stage one is due: Saturday, October 11th. Submissions will be compiled and sent in to WotC to be judged. The winner will be selected on Monday, October 13th and will be announced sometime after that.
Stage two is due: Thursday, October 23rd. Submission will again be compiled and sent in to WotC to be selected. The winner will be selected on Monday, October 27th and will be announced sometime after that.
Please use the comments field of this article to submit your deck name and your deck contents as you finish them. No entries that are submitted after Friday October 10th, 11:59 PM will be forwarded on. No exceptions. Ditto for the deck lists, except they will end at 11:59 PM Wednesday the 22nd. No exceptions.
IMPORTANT: When you submit your Name and/or Deck PLEASE INCLUDE A WAY TO GET A HOLD OF YOU! Either an email address, or an MTGO username, or some way that we can contact you and verify that YOU are the right person to get the prize!

Tempest Theme Deck Listing
Here's an example of an existing, non-PDC decklist from the set:
Da Rules -
Name Contest:
Name the deck. It's pretty straight forward, I guess. Something that denotes either Slivers, or the Aggressive G/R theme, or something that's awesome.
Deck Contest:
- Each Deck must contain 4x Muscle Slivers.
- The Deck must be all commons. (PDC4L!)
- 4x's are okay for some cards, but probably not all of them. Remember, we're aiming for a "precon" feeling here, not a pre-built PDC "contender" deck.
- The deck 'theme' should be around a R/G "Aggro" (aka Aggressive) deck.
- There is no specified limit to the number of entries per person, within reason.
- Only Tempest cards (see the comments section, 3rd one up from the bottom)
- 60 Cards (as usual for theme decks)
Some things to remember: cards with a common version are allowed to be proxies in Casual PDC matches. Also, don't forget that there are some decent colorless cards that can augment an aggro/sliver strategy! But keep in mind this is a low cost deck, it can't really be packed to the gills with chase commons.
Da Prizes -
What good is a contest without prizes? Not much, usually. So lets get silly up in here!
Name Winner (aka the person whose deck's name is chosen):
Added 10-28-2008:
Congrats go out to Salgy, who will have his deck's name forever associated with the PDC Tempest theme deck. When you all see Forest Fire I think you all will be happy with the deck!
Good Job Salgy!
4x of the theme deck + 6 Tempest Boosters, and a $25 gift certificate to www.mtgotraders.com from PureMTGO.com
Deck Winner (aka the person whose deck's list is chosen):

You have your assignment, so it's time to get crackin', yo!
Last, and certainly not least, the fine folks at www.classicquarter.com are going to be getting their own precon to build, but in an entirely, vastly, completely different manner. Be sure to keep an eye on their website for more details soon!
(Time for the fine print - WotC employees and employees of PureMTGO or www.mtgotraders.com are NOT eligible to participate. This does NOT include writers. Meaning that if you only write for PureMTGO, you are allowed to participate in the contest!)

The decklist winner is Pi Zhan 83. Thanks to all that participated and hopefully we can do these again soon.
Congratulations to the winner but boo for there not being any lotus petal in the winning deck !
Good job on running the competition and I look forward to wizards involving the community in future projects.

I posted the wrong decklist. The correct one is:
Ivo's untuned Forest fire (correct version - this replaces the list right below this, which obviously adds up to more than 60; my first submission, "Ivo's Forest Fire" isn't replaced by either of these posts, and stands as a separate submission).

I don't mean for this to replace my previous submission, as I understand it we are not limited to one deck submission.
I personally prefer my first submission (where I already made an effort to include some variety). But I don't know what WotC is looking for, so I wanted to also submit a list with slightly increased variety. With that in mind, I intentionally "untuned" Ivo's Forest Fire (below) to include some of the card choices I described in the post "explaining my choices" (also below).
I hadn't actually included Pincer Beetles in the previous deck as I was tight with space, and they do clash with the beneficial targetting effects in the deck, and I had cut the relatively useless frog tongue cantrip - but here there is room for them, so the skill testing opportunities are more numerous, and there are more directions open for aspiring deckbuilders to evolve the deck towards.
Still, I really liked my core deck and how it tied with the Forest Fire name... So I kept the core, dilluting to 3x most previously 4x. I re-distributing some 2x and 1x and added new 1x (Broken Fall, Frog Tongue, Pincer Beetles).
The core is still strongly Forest Fire in feel...

I think Forest Fire is a well chosen name, generic enough to keep the freedom in the decklists. I´m also glad that it fits well with my submission, so I don´t need to start again from scratch and I can only make a few adjustments.
Analysing better my previous submission I guess 21 lands was a little bellow the line for a precon, even an aggro one. Maybe it´s better to add one more mountain and the beetle wasn´t playing all that well with the other cards anyway.
Submission #2:
3 Spike Drone
3 Metalic Sliver
//6 1-drop
4 Muscle Sliver
2 Seeker of Skybreak
2 Heartwood Dryad

//7 midgame
3 Elvish Fury
2 Broken Fall

//11 spells

9 Mountain
//22 lands
My third submission is going to cut a few creatures, since I´m too heavy on them, and add a few utility spells. Interesting to see how tranquility plays fine with broken fall and crown of flames as they can just dodge it. Also I believe that while tinviper is a little weak for aggro, its first strike interacts well enough with fury and kindle on combat to deserve a slot for fun.

Chosen name is Forest Fire. With that in mind, I lean heavily towards specific card choices: I want to max out on Kindle due to the name of the deck, and Kindle, like Muscle Sliver, asks to be a 4x. 4x Seeker of Skybreak represents the (Skyshroud) Forest and 4x Fireslinger represents the Fire - and they interact very well with each other.
I also want to put some (3x) Sandstone warriors and some (3x) Crown of Flames, as they have *FIRE* breathing (again linking to the deck name). The warriors elegantly combine first strike with the in-built pump (and yes, I know the ability isn't formally named fire breathing).
I know many look down on auras, but the Crown of Flames can avoid the 2-for-1 downside if played with care. Good lessons for new players!
Harrow as a 3x, puts the *FOREST* to go with the above *FIRE* (in flavor and also gameplay terms - read on). Harrow over Rampant growth wasn't tough, and I also decided on harrow over the Skyshroud Elf (Elf would interact with Seeker, and would be another body). Harrow fits the Forest Fire theme better IMO - notice that with the 3x Warriors and 3x Flames, players will often cast Harrow, sacrifice a forest and get two mountains. Harrow is an instant and puts the lands into play untapped (unlike Growth) - 2 untapped mountains at instant speed goes well with attacking or blocking Sandstone Warriors (or anything equipped with Crown of Flames). Harrow doubles as a (situational) combat trick in this deck!
A minor advantage of Harrow over the other options: Harrow is better at thinning lands out of the deck, something that is good to impart on new players, even if it is subtle.
That is 25 non-land cards that are the core of the deck. Now I round out the deck with some variety. I think some Fanatics are a must, they are iconic and also help the Kindles and Slingers - I settled on just two Fanatics as they aren't integral to the deck. Buyback is one of Tempest memorable mechanics, thus the 2x Elvish fury which also gives some much needed instant pump effect (and a good place to put extra mana in the mid to late game). Spikes were a big part of the identity of Tempest green, thus 2x Spike Drone - they make for interesting combat decisions (I think 2x Drones is better than 1x Spike Drone + 1x Mogg Raider).
That leaves me at 31 non-land cards.
1x Pincher Beetles may look odd in the deck. It is a bit bad in the deck as it can't be targetted with several of the beneficial effects - that is exactly why I included it. Players get a taste of shroud and how it can sometimes be a negative when they can't target their own creature with a pump effect.
1x Rootwalla and 1x Skyshroud Troll completes the top end creatures of the deck (along with the 3x Sandstone Warriors).
I put 1x Frog tongue and 1x stun as token cantrips; many times it is correct to cantrip Tongue by casting it on an oppoent's creature (this deck has no fliers), which is a good lesson in being open minded. The humble Stun can sometimes win games.
Speaking of winning the game, 1x Rolling thunder represents the Red X spell family which can turn games around - or win on the spot.
I also wanted 1 non-creature artifact. I thought about Squee's Toy, but I opted on Lotus Petal. I hope it will show players that sometimes the extra speed is worth a card - but many times, it isn't worth it (Petal also helps very slightly with color fixing). Red has been getting these sort of "ritual" effects, so I thought one petal belonged in the deck. Even though the petal doesn't stick around after use, with 2 lands (even mountains) and 1 petal you can still cast a harrow to get you out of a tight spot.
Finally, due to the not Sliver centric deck name, I settled on 1x Coiled Tinviper for artifact creature. With the amount of combat tricks, the first strike is very relevant, whereas Metallic Sliver is only good when you have a Muscle Sliver in play.
The curve of the deck thus far tops at 4 mana, so think 23 lands is plenty (there are 3 harrows there, as well). I don't want to go below 23 as the deck is still 2 colors, and you need 3 mana to cast Harrow. If the deck gets too many lands there are multiple ways to put the extra mana to good use. The deck is heavier on Red than on Green, putting me at 12 Mountains and 11 Forests. Green can get you mountains whereas Red cannot get you forest, so I kept the land mix approximately quite even despite the stronger red requirements.
Here is my deck submission. I have given this a good deal of effort to tie the deck into the name (I didn't submit a deck until the name was chosen for that reason). I wanted to have at the same time strong sinergy and variety, and I think I have reached that goal.

This deck provides a strong sliver basis with support from other creatures (Spike Drone), enchantments (Giant Strength), and instants (Elvish Fury). A quick creature attack is backed up through direct damage spells that can support attacking creatures or deliver a finishing blow to your opponent.
As a starter/theme deck this deck provides a player with the opportunity to learn to use creatures, artifacts, sorceries, instants, and enchantments. The deck also provides players with an introduction to keywords (Haste and Buyback), abilities with various costs (Rootwalla's mana cost and Fireslinger's tap cost), X spells, direct damage, and combos (Fireslinger plus Seeker of Skybreak).

this deck is more of a precon feel i have 4 muscle slivers because the contest called for them. i have 4 kindles because it goes with the G/R aggro blus it kinda fits with Forest Fire. Both cards fit with the smokey the bear theme Muscle sliver being smoke and he is putting out kindle to prevent forest fires.
i also have a huge variety of cards i didnt want a bunch 4x or 3x of alot of cards because that is the making of a PDC competitive deck not a pre-con that shows people the ropes or teaches people how to play a deck. I didn't add in a bunch of slivers because there is already a sliver theme deck plus a all sliver theme deck is to pumped.

This Deck is called Musclely Pauper. It is Pauper legal despite running Harrow which is an uncommon in the set - the Harrow and rampant growth allow you to easily access the plains to play the talon sliver (allowing a strong sliver theme in the deck). The mana ramp also allows for a quick 6/6 trampling Rootbreaker Wurm and the mana also powers out some rolling thunder. The kindles take out opposing creatures. The deck has lots of muscle (including the green sliver) and is pauper legal. Hence the name.

I think this contest is a great idea! PDC for Tempest? And it's going to be a real Theme Deck? Where do I sign? (Well, here of course... Duh!)
I have only two suggestions for a R/G aggro deck, trying to get in line with previous "Theme Deck" names used by WotC:
- Primal Power: Referring to the primal nature of both Red and Green, and to the aggressive factor of the deck.
- Outbreak: Mentioning that the four Muscle Slivers are only a small localized focus of aggression from the hive (in this case focused on your opponent's head, of course).
I'm working on a decklist, I just heard of the contest today, and rushed in to get my name submissions on time. Also, I might need to tweak the list depending on what the final name is.

I go by SilentJ on the Wizards.com boards as well
I have only two suggestions for a R/G aggro deck, trying to get in line with previous "Theme Deck" names used by WotC:
- Primal Power: Referring to the primal nature of both Red and Green, and to the aggressive factor of the deck.
- Outbreak: Mentioning that the four Muscle Slivers are only a small localized focus of aggression from the hive (in this case focused on your opponent's head, of course).
I'm working on a decklist, I just heard of the contest today, and rushed in to get my name submissions on time. Also, I might need to tweak the list depending on what the final name is.
Carnubak on MTGO.
To single space hold down shift and hit enter. Also make sure there is no extra spacing below your decklist.
I don't know if I'll get a chance to submit a decklist, but I had a deck name come to me a little while ago
Sliverocious
When I think of a Sliver Aggro deck, I think Sliver + Ferocious

Deck Name #1: Instant Slivers
This idea comes from the quick R/G aggro idea that wants to get the game over ASAP... just like you want your oatmeal or rice ASAP... instantly.
Deck Name #2: Steriods
This is playing alot more to the theme, with the Muscles and the instant results you can get with an aggro deck like this.

What? Make your precon contest? A pauper one? For Tempest? How could I miss this one?

Name submission:
Vigorous Assault
Rath´s Overrun
Rally the woods
Savage Stampede
Rath´s Stampede
Spicy Stompy
I tried hard to capture the “many green strong guys wielding blazing spells” feel, I hope it worked.
Deck Submission:
3 Spike Drone
3 Metalic Sliver
4 Muscle Sliver
2 Seeker of Skybreak
2 Heartwood Dryad
1 Bayou Dragonfly
3 Heart Sliver
3 Fireslinger
2 Rootwalla

3 Trained Armodon
1 Skyshroud Troll
3 Elvish Fury
2 Broken Fall
4 Kindle
1 Lightning Blast
13 Forest
8 Mountain
1 Lotus Petal
Main theme: speed
Sub-themes: slivers, combat efficiency, ping/untap, regeneration
My casual precon self refrained my PDC self from adding all tempest goodies (aka moggs) in just one deck. So I ended up walking the main green path (considering the 4 muscles) with red as support (for burn and more slivers). It didn´t become full out aggro as it could have but I guess this fits fine with the precon feel.
I can't seem to get it to NOT use excessive spacing. Sorry bout that.

total = 48 without lands
Lands (22) : 11 Mountain
11 Forest
even is there's more red cards we need some early forests to play turn two rampant growth or elf.
I think the mana curve is enough aggressive i play a little more 4cc than 3cc to make rampant growth and skyshrould elf better if on table by turn 2.
I don't know if I'll get around to making a decklist, but here's a deck name that came to mind:
Sliverocious
When I think of Sliver aggro I think Sliver + Ferocious

"Pressure Cooker" or "Under Pressure"
I like "Pressure Cooker" better because I think it acurately conveys what will try to do with a G/R aggro precon deck for Tempest. With quick G/R creature and red burn, we will constantly try to apply "Pressure" to our opponent with the creatures, while simulatneously "Cook" them and their creatures with our burn.
I have a deck started but was holding off on submitting until we see what the name will be, but I'm sure what I put above will accurately describe the winning deck.
Deck Name: Growing Thunder
Use Green creatures and spells to "grow" mana and creatures (via pump). Red creatures and spells "thunder" a beating down on the opponent, plus the spell Rolling Thunder as a finisher.
Feature some block mechanics via Slivers (who also "grow" each other, and Metallic Sliver also provides an answer to all the Circles of Protection), Elvish Fury (Buyback) and an answer or two for shadow creatures (Heartwood Dryad and/or Reality Anchor)
The Growing Thunder also hints that the precon is a tribute to the PDC community. Paupers are asking for more and more of MTGO (filters, events) and WotC is responding.
I'm gorckat on MTGO and at hotmail.
Deck Names:
Slivers' Fury
OR
Cheap Beats
(A play on "cheap eats," and it describes both the casting costs and the buy costs of the cards in the deck)
Deck List:
13 Mountain
11 Forest
4 Kindle
4 Muscle Sliver
4 Metallic Sliver
3 Heart Sliver
3 Mogg Fanatic
3 Elvish Fury
3 Rootwalla
2 Stun
2 Mogg Conscripts
2 Mogg Raider
2 Skyshroud Troll
1 Rolling Thunder
1 Crown of Flames
1 Pincher Beetles
1 Squee's Toy
Things like Stun and Crown of Flames are good skill-testers, while Elvish Fury, Rootwalla, Rolling Thunder, and Skyshroud Troll make good late-game mana sinks. The curve is generally low enough that 24 lands should mean no screwing. Squee's Toy is just for amusement value.
