News:
A huge turnout for the Momir Basic event with 836 Players in the Momir Event, and some quick math by bubba0077 on the WotC boards estimates that about 4800 new avatars hit the system from this event!  Wowzers!  Speaking of big events... MTGO PTQ's start soon!

Prices:
Avatars aren't tanking yet, but likely will once the CS crew filters back from the holidays and stares in horror at the hundreds of avatar request tickets.  Extended cards surge hugely, some doubling in price for the upcoming PTQ season on MTGO.  Expect them to continue to climb as desperate paper players try to get on the gravy train of the Pro Tour.  In other old set news... Oath of Druids is now the second most expensive card being just 4 tix behind Force of Will.

PureMTGO news:
Happy holidays, the fine folks at MTGOTraders.com will be closing at 7pm on the 31st and will be opening at 9am on the 2nd, so plan ahead for any in store purchases!

Whatcha Been Playin':
AJ: Went 4-2 in the Momir CCC event. Was paired in the first round with Lord Erman, who recently wrote the Momir primer. Sick, sick luck in that game. Turn 4 Rosheen Meanderer into turn 5 Avatar of Woe. He got a Realm Razer, which made Rosheen even more powerful. Dabbled with angels and green avatars in tribal.
Erik - Affinity and Hypergenesis
Sebastian - Jund!!!!!!!???!!!  Yes.

Overall a vast improvement by Paul Leicht at Tue, 12/29/2009 - 10:22

Overall a vast improvement from previous podcasts. Sebastian I noticed your enunciation was much much clearer than in the past and on the whole the cast flowed smoothly through my ears without much in the way of wince worthy moments. The only thing I missed was AJ's cool accent to spice things up. I did notice that the cast itself cut in and out but as a technical issue I am not really sure what the fix is for that.

I noticed that steam vents went up to 17 tickets and was like "Oh Ive got 3!" but then I realized they aren't mine but are loaners. Bummer. I'd sell them in a heart beat if they were mine.

Momir was a total disappointment to me, culminating in a 1-5 loss and a totally unpleasant round with some teenager? who was not graceful at all despite having that in his name but he was quite windy (talkative) at least. Anyway I gave that round up halfway through just because he was so abusive and obnoxious. I thought about reporting his blatant trolling but then decided it wasn't worth the effort. Instead I just blocked him. Sadly blocking doesn't work IN Tourney so I had to put up with his harrasment through out the games.

Overall my opinion of the format is not high. The match I won was purely about the luck of the flip. I think I gave a way a game or 2 I could have won if I was more astute but generally all the primers and practice led to naught. Oh what the heck free avatar and MULTIBALL!

Thanks guys for making it possible and thanks WotC for giving us the chance to play.

The fact that Oath is a one card combo in a metagame like classic and that it only takes 5-6 slots of your deck to win make it desirable.

I think there are a lot of factors pushing up the price.
1. its a teir 1 rare that needs 4 copys.
2. nostalgia
3. even casual players want this card for multiplayer and other strange less cuthroat magic.
4. nothing else in the set even comes close to the power level this card brings to tournament classic, its kind of like mox diamond in stronghold, except that there are more then just volraths stronghold in exodus for players to want to get for classic.
5. the release events were pretty poor in terms of turnout, and im sure that the available drafts wont fire at a huge clip.

I know those cant explain why it's so high when nobody is firing classic events, but they paint a good picture for its 2nd place status. We still have until april for people to open these up, once we get into urzas saga i believe that all tempest block teir 1 legacy and vintage singles will start a medoric rise in price. If you think oath is expensive now, wait until a pack of exodus has not been opened up for 5 months and all of a sudden something is printed that makes it a dominate stratgie instead of a teir 1 strat.

And by the way, having played oath for the last 3 weeks im not quite sure why this card is as high as it is. Yes it is an extremly good deck but I have personaly lost matches to a huge array of the metagame and watched others lose too. If we can start firing classic events i believe the meta game that exists will bring down the price of oath as people will see that its not worth 220 bucks when you can still lose your entry to the event with the deck.
just my 2 cents on the why.

p.s. I'm really glad my play set is foil :)

Happy new years!

Don't know why you are glad to have foils? by Anonymous at Tue, 12/29/2009 - 16:52

Didn't you hear? Foils are harder to move and sell for less than their counterparts.

Don't believe me?

Notice the out of stock part. by Paul Leicht at Tue, 12/29/2009 - 17:51

Notice the out of stock part. That is why the listed price is lower. Chalice recent rose in price and the foils were not available so traders didn't raise them to match.

No guff

Small problem with that - since everyone and their mother either uses the price list that Heath uses or steals it from him, most bots out there are buying Foil Chalices for less then the non-foil versions. For no apparent reason, a foil Chalice is worth essentially LESS than a regular one.

Wow. I knew everyone looked at mtgotrader's prices, but I didn't know that bots were literally using them by the number. Do they scrape the website everyday? They can't possibly ask infobot that many questions.

Tarmogoyf - $37, 5 in stock
*FOIL* Tarmogoyf - $55.50, out of stock

DO IT! DO IT!! Set the foil Goyf to $10! Cause massive chaos by declaring an arbitrary value on a commodity that you don't even have! "Gee, if I did have them, I sell them for $10!" That'll teach them to automate their prices. The only people who will get burned are the people who aren't using their own data and who also fully automate their price changes.

If I register 10 new accounts, and make them all post "BUYING UNDERGROUND SEA - 20" in the classifieds, could I move the price of the card with mere words? I don't have 10 computers.

That's my "red mana" post. I didn't realize I wasn't logged in.

Actually, paragraph 3 is definitely red, but paragraph 4 is very blue.
