Nice job. You definitely put a lot of work into this!
Great blog. I'm relatively new to MTGO (Aug 2010) and have always wanted to play classic. This podcast is perfect for me!
As for the trivia, my guess is 25.
Since we're so close to the release of Mirrodin Besieged I have to state the answer kinda odddly but!
36 if you count Mirrodin Besieged
However the answer is 35 if you don't.
Nice podcast guys i hope you keep it up.
yes i'm using my old accout name because it just got changed by wizo's, but my answer is kinda like ranths but,
33 if you count the new set, and 32 if you don't :)
Great! Do more of these. The answer to the trivia is obviously 2: Urza's (UZ & UL) is the only real block that has been released since Classic was announced.
Nice stuff guys.
The format is pretty open right now.
LED unrestricted is disturbing with YWill and offers turn 1 blow outs with; Petal,Ritual,Swamp,Duress,LED,Infernal or Demonic gets YWIll gg.
Gifts,Scroll and Mystical are all under played.
New Oath and Tinker target coming soon in BSC.
Memory Jar should be fueling Shop decks as a 3 of.
Edit; Dredge and Shops are great budget options for Classic.
There is no clear best deck as of now. They are the best decks on a budget.
Shops are the most placing right now.
Bazaar is retarded.
GW has a weak Dredge match up and it needs a lot of cards that would diminish valuable slots for other decks so preparing for it is not worth it for GW as even E Tutors and 6+ cards may still not be enough. Serra is terrible there for every reason.
Dark Times has a great Dredge MU.
Yeah, I must add that my guess does not include Mirrodin Besieged since the question was asked before the set has been released. So it would be 26 if you include MB :)
I love reading/hearing articles about Classic. There are just so few of these around, keep at it Magic Eternal.
BTW, Whiffy, I think you'll have to hurt me now ;)
Trivia Question: 28
And the decklist links / metagame breakdown are a nice bonus. Keep em coming.
are reanimator decks still a threat in classic tournaments? i haven't seen any posted in tournament standings for awhile now. as a mostly classic player i'm ready to step into the world of classic tourneys and was wanting to bring reanimator if it still stands a chance.
I wont lie or sugar caot it. Reanimator is not powerful in terms of where the metagame is. You have to expend a lot of cards to make a creature that is your win condition, while also utilizing your graveyard. This combination of things seems like 2 straight marks against the deck.
However, with that being said, the deck could be powerful and if you build it with a competitive metagame in mind it could work.
I would look at these cards as helpers to get you there
entomb
bazaar
thirst for knowledge
gifts ungiven
frantic search
all the tutors
vault/key
fow
duress
thoughtseize
animates
guys
bounce or natures claim.
thanks for responding. i have all those cards. maybe i'm confusing classic with legacy in terms of that deck. even with that being said i still havent seen it place in awhile. maybe i'll utilize my cards elsewhere. thanks again.
I tried Animator in a daily couple weeks ago. The deck is good with Tutors, Mysticals and Bazaar, but It is game 2 and 3 against Leyline that is the hard part. The plan of not using GY is the key. Oath is just the best deck of all time if you want to cheat fatties. Bazaar is the best GY deck evar if you want to use the bin.
SnT plan is kind of bad against Oath(the card and the deck) and opponents randomly Time Vault off of it or dredge keeps a Stinkweed in hand.
You can still probably play it as tutoring up answers is a lot easier then dredge has it and there are no real aggro decks like Merfolk to clock you. Dredge has an easier time against Shops since they dont play spells.
Shops are going to be a nightmare Match Up and If they Chalice+Crypt/Relic and play anything else it's close to game. Barring any On the play hands with Entomb, Daze, Reanimate or Entomb, FoW, Mystical->Reanimate.
Hey guys,
Really loved the podcast.
It is nice to see classic stuff on PUREMTGO again. Outside of Whiffy's recent Lunchbox it has been quite sometime.
Keep up the good work and will be looking for the 2'nd episode.

Yo guys, we TRULY appreciate the positive feedback.
I was hoping some of you could shed some light on exactly how you would like for us to improve the podcast. What are some of the things you would like to see implemented? Would you like for us to delve deeper into decklists and debate inclusions/exclusions? What about results? Would you like to see special "Classic Guests"?
<3
I would say mostly there are some very minor (trivial in fact) sound problems but otherwise it was technically fine. (That interrupt in the middle was a little odd but understandable.)
Also you might want to script it a bit to keep the flow going (talking points for each talker).
Other than that it sounded like what I expected and was at times interesting. I think one thing about classic is, not everyone knows the full history of the format so perhaps some more of that in the typed part would be good.
As far as guests go, well the obvious ones are Mike Linton and everyone else who is a regular contributor at CQ. Also maybe a few of the consistent top-8ers of the premier events who aren't in the clan.
This is exactly the kind of podcast we needed here guys. Thanks so much for your effort. Do you have any plans going forward as to it's frequency?
In a perfect world it would be every week, but life is tough and were one 2 different continents in 3 different timezones, so as for now its up in the air.
As someone ready to get into legacy, then hopefully onwards to classic, this is the type of article you need to see to inspire one forward! There is usually nothing worse in Magic than getting into a format and then realizing that no one is playing it. So, I hope that this inspires more Classic deck building, and as a person who has been playing since 1994ish, I have truly seen the progression of Vintage (type one as us old people called it). So, great job, awesome clan, good game!
Time to be unfair on the trivia question. Classic was announced as part of the 'casual constructed care package', because the Open format (later renamed freeform) allowed more than 4 of a card, and minimum 40-card decks (after some bright spark worked out how to adjust saved draft decks, necessitating either patching or opening up the functionality). This was the same package that gave us the 'Anything Goes' room to solve the 'What is casual?' debate.
This occurred a few months before my interregnum from the game. As a pretty much strictly casual player, any fillip from Wizards was a big deal, and damned rare to boot.
In that time, 37 draftable sets have been released on Magic Online. (38 if you include Mirrodin Besieged.)
Congratulations to our winner AJ the answer is 37. We already recorded episode 2 prior to your answer so will need to insert an errata in the text of the article.
I will find you in client with the prize.
I'm currently stuck on a 2003-vintage laptop which is unable to run the client. We can either wait 'til my main machine gets fixed, or I could nominate someone to hold the prize on my behalf until then.
Hi AJ - I should have been aware of the computer issues from Freed from the Reel. Ill hold on to for you, once you are back up and running please add buddy "Eternal_Hammer" and we can do the exchange.
- Good luck getting the PC fixed!
It's all good. With luck and a fair wind, it shouldn't be too long...
