9th Editon Special

Hello folks, it's time for another special about budget uncommons that you might want to get yourself for future useage. This time I will cover 9th edition, and as in the previous special I'll give you a list of twelve cards with my commentary. Last time I didn't mention it, but it can't hurt so I'll state it this time: It's twelve cards because that kind of fits the theme of my regular series and the cards that I choose are budgetcards.

Let's get started, I think I will use the usual WUBRG order.

White

Zealous Inquisitor
Yes, it's a cleric that happens to be previously printed as a common. However, that set is rotating out of Extended next year. This guy is relativly useful on his own, damage redirection is not bad. He was a semi-bomb in 9th Edition limited. With enough mana you too could make good use of his power.

Gift of Estates
This one is an unique card, it can grab shock-duals and was not seeing much play during it's time in Standard. I guess R&D hoped that it would have been a bit more popular. In the new EXT it will be truely unique since Noble Templar will be gone. I suggest getting a playset as soon as possible, it's cheap and non-green landsearch. What more can you ask for?

Blue

Another card that used to be common, but that was in Stronghold, we won't have that set avaible to us for quite some time. This one works well with ninjas like Ninja of the Deep Hours, but you could always just give him some equipment and try to go aggro. Equipment like the Loxodon Warhammer, or maybe Whispersilk Cloak and something else. Bonesplitter, or in case you decide to stick to ninjas, Ronin Warclub are also options.

Dream Prowler

This one got replaced with the former rare Persuasion, it is still a classic. Most blue decks that like to control other players cards use it, at least the budget ones. Oh, and you could always combine it with the newly reintroduced Aura Graft from 10th.
Confiscate

Black

Phyrexian Gargantua
I love this one. It's a black cantrip creature with the usual price black has to pay for the privilege to draw cards. It also has a decent body and like some of the previously mentioned cards would have left extended if it had not been reprinted in 9th.

Actually, I like this one so much that I had plans on writing an article about a deck that uses this beauty. Too bad the timing didn't work out until now. Maybe later.

Blackmail

This one is tricky, it's a one mana discard spell and will be about the best one in the new extended. No more Duress, and no Cabal Therapy, not even the less popular Ostracize.

At the moment this one is pretty cheap, that might change after the rotation, it depends on the power and popularity of black in the new extended. Time will tell.

Red

Another card that used to be a common, does anyone else notice a pattern here? It's a nice card that goes into several decks, I even used it in storm decks that featured some sort of cost-reducer like (Locket of Yesterday). Good for several casual decks and as cheap as uncommons goes. Too bad they didn't reprint Scrivener as well, but we have their child of love, Izzet Chronarch.
Anarchist

Another 9th limited all-star, this one was a huge bomb, at least when you were able to cast it in time. I use it frequently because it is a nice cheap non-symetrical wrath-like effect. For a seven mana sorcery it really is very playable and also fun to play. Grab some.
Flame Wave

Green

Web
This one is in here because it's a nostalgia card, it even was a rare back in the day.   A rare. Well, R&D knows more about the power level of certain effects now then back then.

When Wizards can sell a whole block with a nostalgia theme I certainly can mention this one in here. Uses for this one? Plenty, if you like to play with
Yavimaya Enchantress or Verduran Enchantress.

Summer Bloom
This one used to be an enabler for combo decks. Now it is just a cheap and underused uncommon.

Maybe it will be broken again when the rotation happens. Maybe not. It's still nice to have since it also partly falls into the nostalgia camp. But since it has the slight possibility to become very usefull again I'd say that everyone should think about getting some.

Artifacts

This one was printed six times, five times it was a rare. Another nostalgia card, and even a usefull one to boot. It is a cheap answer to flyers that any deck can use. It's also nice for spirit-tribal decks, since not everyone wants to use only Kamigawa-block spirits.

like this one.
Dancing Scimitar

It's a manafixer, and it is better when your opponents bring their shock-duals. I guess that is reason enough to use them, or.  The relativly low mana cost is also pretty nice.

I prefer to use
Darksteel Ingot, but that is probably just me.
Fellwar Stone

That is almost all there is to say, I won't do honorable mentions this time, mostly because 9th is a bit smaller then the Kamigawa-block. I guess most people noticed that I picked cards that are not in 10th, if not.. Surprise! Or something.

I wrote this article because the last one got some positive feedback, and I hope it's an entertaining read.  The latest update caused some bugs to occur which delays my regular article a little. Expect to see it next week.

 Until next time,
 - yours
Hollow

Consider that this is a spin-off special of my regular 12 Uncommons-articles.

I really don't mean or said anywhere that one should pick this stuff up at 12 for 1, that would be halfway to crazyness.

I normally pick the cheapest of the cheap cards, but I made a few exeptions this time, feel free to guess which ones. Oh, and I only featured cards that they didn't put back into 10th, but you probably already know that.

Prices... normally clicking is enough to see one... *cough* or at least it used to be since normally a picture autolinked to the details about the card. Hm.

you linked me I read... most of it. by dan (Unregistered) 67.175.210.235 (not verified) at Tue, 09/11/2007 - 15:02

I think summer bloom could be hot. I've seen it in an extended green deck that looked, passable. Some of these I have a playset of allready and the dream prowler... I vote no. I think there are way better cards at common to run ninjas off of. 4 to set back down is expensive for a ninja, and he has to attack allone and and ZOMG stronghold art sooo much better. wasn't it a K furgasenandad a peice of art? I dig fellwar stone too. so some good picks but i don't thinkthis is like a 12 for one pick up. is that budget for uncommons what are budgett for uncommons32 fer 1 isn't that how bots buy em? I guess I should have read the old articles maybe you give a run down of what budget is, if so, link me back in the header, if not I think you need to give a run down of the price I should be searching out for these cards, even if you're saying mtgo is selling these suckers for XYZ.

hope some of that is helpful. I love content.

Good article overall, but there are still some better budget uncommons that could replace a few of these as I said on MODO. As you stated though, you're only listing uncommons that aren't in Tenth Edition. Look forward to your next article though.
