Intro

This week we saw the first Prismatic event in months, a Tribal 3x with record attendance, and the usual suspects.  The Prismatic event had 32 players which goes with its prize payout to the top 32 players.  Honestly while I love the format I think its pretty much been killed by WOTC.  Don't let that put you off the format though as it is very fun and still quite popular in casual.

Prismatic

Prismatic 3x 12/29/07 32 Players
Placing Deck
1 Aggro
2 Aggro
4 Aggro
4 Aggro
8 Aggro
8 Aggro
8 Mid Range Aggro
8 Control

Thanks to computer problems and the event disappearing from the PE schedule the results above are from memory and talking to people.  As expected the top eight was aggro heavy, a single control deck made top eight and did not get very far.  The attendance for this event was laughable with every player getting three packs or more in prizes.

Phillyfan's Prismatic Aggro 4th
4 Anurid Brushhopper

4 Trygon Predator
Sideboard
2 Ankh of Mishra
2 Armageddon
3 Tormod's Crypt
2 Winter Orb
3 Krosan Grip
3 Seal of Primordium

This looks like most Prismatic aggro decks, good creatures, some burn, some land destruction, and a bit of equipment.  Combine this with a stack of rare lands and you have a Prismatic deck.  Some of the top eight decks were a little more midrange passing on cards like Zo-Zu the Punisher who is weak in the mirror.  The I think Aven Mindcensor could be cut now that Flash is banned and more tutors have been cut from the format.

Standard with Vanguard

Not held this week due to Prismatic taking its slot, check back next week.

Singleton

Singleton 2x 12/29/07 28 Players
Placing Deck
1* UW Control
2* UB Control
4 GBW Rock
4 Zoo
8 UBW Control
8 UWR Control
8 RDW
8 UG Aggro
*Split Finals

In our second week of Singleton events post bans were see a complete reversal.  Last week six aggro decks were in the top eight this week we find only three.  The finals were split by Blue Black  and Blue White control, pre-bannings Blue Black control was the superior deck with access to Psychatog to go with Upheaval.  After bannings white has more appeal with some life gain options to help aggro matchups.  The top eight also saw a Blue White control deck splashing red for burn and a Blue White Black control deck.  Blue White Black decks are high on card quality but have some mana consistency issues.  Aggro saw a traditional Red Green White zoo deck, a mono red deck, and a green-blue deck.  We'll have to wait a few more weeks to start to see what impact the bannings have had on the format.

Tribal Wars Standard

Tribal Wars 3x 12/30/07 71 Players
Placing Tribe Colors
1 Faeries UG
2 Goblins BR
4 Zombies B
4 Elves GB
8 Elves GB
8 Faeries UB
8 Faeries UB
8 Unknown, timed out N/A

As expected the Tribal event was by far the largest of the 3x events.  Faeries took three slots, Blue Green won the event but a pair of Blue Black decks made it to the top eight.  Zombies, the only deck not seeing play in Standard made top four.  Tribal right now is a pretty open format, Faeries and Elves are probably the two most consistent decks but really any of the tribes in the top eight are solid contenders.

Classic

Classic 2x 12/31/07 24 Players
Placing Deck
1 Dredge
2 UBW Stiflenought
4 UGR Threshold
4 RDW aka burn.dec
8 Dredge
8 Mono Black Pox
8 GBR Aggro
8 UGR Threshold

Dredge took the top spot this week showing that the Extended powerhouse is just as good in Classic.  Flash failed to make top eight making it look like dredge is the new combo deck to beat.  Stiflenought put up another strong performance as did Blue Green Red Threshold, these are the formats best aggro-control decks.

Rozia's Stiflenought - 2nd
Lands - 19
1 Cephalid Coliseum
3 Flooded Strand
2 Island
3 Mishra's Factory
1 Plains
3 Polluted Delta
1 Swamp
2 Watery Grave
1 Academy Ruins
2 Hallowed Fountain
Other Spells - 31
4 Brainstorm
4 Counterspell
2 Engineered Explosives
4 Force of Will
1 Pithing Needle
1 Sensei's Divining Top
3 Stifle
4 Swords to Plowshares
1 Vedalken Shackles
2 Ponder
3 Spell Snare
2 Trickbind
Creatures - 10
4 Meddling Mage
3 Phyrexian Dreadnought
3 Trinket Mage
Sideboard - 15
3 Kataki, War's Wage
4 Leyline of the Void
3 Sphere of Law
3 Threads of Disloyalty
2 Extirpate

This deck aims to disrupt the opponent's game plan with counters, other spells, and Meddling Mage while it pays two mana for a 12/12 trampler.  It is a very strong deck though you are weak against Krosan Grip and Ancient Grudge.  The lack of Tormod's Crypt in the main deck or the sideboard seems like an oversight and would clearly have helped versus dredge in the finals.  A strong deck with good game plans versus most of the format's best decks.

Singleton Review

I have the results for four Singleton PEs, two before the banning of Jitte, Upheaval, and Flash and two after.  Red dots represent a finals appearance while black dots show top eights without making the finals.

Deck Top 8s Percent of Top 8 Finals/Top 8 Ratio
UB Control 22% 43%
Goblins 16% 40%
UGW Aggro-Control 13% 50%
UG Aggro 13% 25%
RG Aggro 9% 0%
UW Control 6% 50%
GBW Rock 6% 0%
Zoo 6% 0%
RWu Aggro 3% 100%
Other 6% 0%

Blue Black control had the most slots before and after the bannings and is a strong contender to win any given event.  Surprisingly Goblins decks were the second most successful taking five top eight slots and making the finals twice.  Goblins made the finals once before Lorwyn using red and green and four times after as a red black or red black green deck.  Blue Green White and Blue Green decks come next.  These decks are similar with Blue Green White splashing white for a few powerful spells.  The Blue Green variants tend to be more aggressive while mana of the UGW are fairly controlling decks.  Red green aggro comes in next with three slots though it has not made a top eight much like the Blue Black decks it trades some card quality for a stronger mana base.  UW control, rock and zoo all had two slots.  UW plays most of the same blue cards as UB control but white offers the creature removal and wrath effects.  Rock plays like rock, it is slow with large green men, plenty of removal from black and white and some discard.  Zoo takes the RG decks and adds white for more powerful creatures and spells.  While more powerful on paper its unstable mana base keeps it in check.  Three other decks made top eights but only once.  It is hard to tell what to play in Singleton post bannings.  UB control was hurt the most by them but as the previous best deck it has plenty of life left.  Goblins has done very well even with a small number of people running it so it is worth testing if you want to run an aggro deck.  I think the most important thing right now is to test and tune your Singleton list.  This is something that not everyone does because it is hard it may take you ten games before you draw that spell you wanted to test out.  Even when you do drawing it once doesn't really give you a sense of how good it is.  Put some time into your singleton deck, know how to play it, and cut weaker cards.

hey, i was the person who timed out during the top 8 of the tribal 3x.

i was playing UW merfolk, and i followed that top 8 (which i fell asleep waiting for, heh), with a top 4 in the 2x tribal event that followed it, a few days ago. lost to faeries in the top 4, which i was 6-0 vs in the two tournies up to that point, bad draws on my part and topdecking on his part put me away. With back to back top 8's in 6+ round events, seems like UW merfolk is another solid contender for tribal (favorable matchups against UB and UG faeries, mono black zombies, GB elves, and i guess BR goblins, i'm 3-0 vs goblins altho it seems like it shouldnt be very good for me on paper. bad matchups include WW, and RW giants. i'm 1-0 vs the 4c elemental build that is starting to be played by some of the better players in the events (sti plays in, along with renappel, etc).

so, yeah, there ya go.

Singleton Combo by iceage4life at Fri, 01/04/2008 - 12:35

I've played Heartbeat combo once in Singleton and didn't do very well.  The problem is its not very consistant.  Sometimes you have a good draw, other times you draw all your card draw spells and no combo peices, or all your mana acceleration and no card draw, etc.  I found it to be a turn 4-6 win goldfishing which doesn't beat aggro consistantly.  You need to consider that while people can only run 1x of hate cards you can only run 1x of combo cards.  This reduces the combos you can go for pretty drasticly.  The Wish cards are also very weak in Singleton which hurts your tutoring options.

If you have a combo deck you think can compete in the PEs I'd be more than happy to take a look at it and consider playing it.  If you do send it to me at timpskowski[AT]gmail.com and thanks.

Tarmotog, I had a pretty hellish (at least it seemed like it) control deck built a while back, duress, thoughtseize, therapy, counterspells, etc, and singleton heartbeat blew me out almost every time we played.  It was a very durable and resiliant deck.  I'm not sure why it doesn't do well at PEs.

It's sad to see singleton consisting of aggro, control and aggro control.. It's not like combo decks are weak in singleton.. The current meta is like watching t2 from a few years back.. Singleton definitely has more potential than these results show. Plus the fact that people have a more difficult time hating cards unlike spammed 4x leylines + tormod crypts. I don't play in the pe cos it's not convinient for me so it's not fair for me to make comments on the pes but I personally find it strange that all this time no one could just play combo and win given the significant tools available to make them work and to protect them. The power level of singleton isn't at this level.
