An Ode to the Fae

“Welcome to Pure Standard!” is what I’d normally say,
But, then again, today’s not a normal Pure Standard day,
Today we’re looking at a deck that kills oh so fast,
Faster than goblins, Elves!, or Affinity’s past.

At Grand Prix Shizouka the deck made the top eight,
A signal to most of that the deck’s really great,
So we’ll look at two lists: one from Takahashi, one from Ruel,
And I’m certain you won’t lose your next duel.

In Morningtide, the Fae became awesome,
All due to a card which is named Bitterblossom,
With this enchantment you can win in due time,
And that’s something that counts, more than riddles or rhymes.

You see, not much enchantment removal is currently present,
Which mean that this card is incredibly unpleasant,
But combined with others it’s a recipe to win,
So let this article officially begin.

Oona’s Blackguard combines with Bitterblossom so well,
That your opponent’s will be fearing this spell,
All your faeries turn into discard-making machines,
And the +1/+1 counter just makes them serene.
Bitterblossom

However, Blackguard seems like a “win more” threat,
People seem excited as it’s from the new set,
Ruel said if he played again he would cut it,
So it might be a card you’re willing to omit.

But with Scion of Oona, you get the +1/+1 bonus and shroud,
Which may cause your opponents to start screaming aloud,
If you’re lucky enough to get two Scions out you will see,
That victory is almost certainly guaranteed.

But Scions of Oona and Oona’s Blackguard aren’t answers,
To the opponent’s offensive advancers,
That’s why this deck runs three cards of permission,
That too are certified for their own recognition.

The first is Rune Snag, a card that many blue decks play,
But, it strikes your opponent’s especially in the Fae,
It prevents your opponent’s Wrath of Gods and Damnations,
Which, in turn, can cause a great deal of frustration.

The second card is Spellstutter Sprite,
Who almost always wins a counter-war fight,
Due to the tokens from the Bitterblossom enchantment,
That will certainly take down their offensive encampment.

Finally, Cryptic Command is another key card,
Four options to choose can sometimes be hard,
But countering a spell is the one you should take,
And the other options are just icing on the cake.

So “How does the deck win?”, you might ask,
The deck generates an offensive real fast,
And with its counter suit you deny them a chance,
To allow their armies an opportunity to advance.

However, the deck is not without weakness,
There are some matchups that cause bleakness,
But with the right sideboard strategy you can win,
And be victorious with your faeries and kin.

Elves! is probably the toughest matchup by far,
Takahashi’s build is the one that’s the star,
Nameless Inversion gets rid of their creatures,
Before you can bring in your sideboard card features.

After boarding, bring in Deathmarks and Flashfreeze,
And the matchup will be more of a breeze,
Most Elves! decks don’t run Harmonize in their build,
So exhausting their hand will leave ‘em less than thrilled.

Reveillark is another hard match,
But Ruel’s build is just the right catch,
Even though he runs no Extirpates in the sideboard,
You still should be able to win with your faerie horde.

At sideboard timebring in Thoughtseize and Sowers,
Because the Reveillark deck couldn’t get any slower,
Remove their combo cards from their hand,
And steal Reveillarks before they can make a grand stand.

But which build should your run: Takahashi or Ruel?,
The answer is in your style of school,
If you are a Timmy and enjoy big creatures and spells,
Then Ruel has all your whistles and bells.

However, if you’re a player who likes more permission,
Takahashi is more for the Spikely magician,
However, both builds are similar enough,
That choosing between the two can be rough.

So that’s all I have to say about this game-winning deck,
Have some fun playing its metagame tech,
Join me next week where I promise the rhymes I’ll reduce,
Because as you can tell I’m no Dr. Seuss.

Hey dont let them get you down...it was well though out and I felt it flowed and made sence. Yes it was different from the norm and thats good....i get tired of ready the same blah blah about a deck and how it does or doesnt work well. He entitled it "ode to the Fae" and that is exactly what he did. Good work man.

It is a great article, but I think lark is not hard to deal with at all, in fact, that is one of the fae's favorate matchup.

Another great, memorable article but now you have me worried.  Isn't a muscial episode a sign that the show has jumped the shark? (www.jumptheshark.com)  I hope not!  Keep them coming and I don't want to see a marriage episode or anybody giving birth then I will have to split while the gettings good.

For any 'haters' out there: try being creative.  It's freakin' hard.  This was a really neat and very interesting.

Well done!
