Casual Plays # 8.5: The Decks You Think But Never Made
Hello again to the patrons of MTGOTraders and the readers of PureMTGO! You are probably done with a lot of DTK-FRF release events and wondering what cards to use to make your casual decks better. Here is an example of a Standard Pauper deck that you might like to bring in a PRE.
I wanted to try this out in the MPDC April 20 event but was not able to because I just don't know what time it begins in my Timeline. Please help me out Standard Pauper players and tell me what time it starts in Asia (Philippines).
STANDARD
There seems to be a lot of mono colored decks being played in the casual room these days and here are some mono colored decks that I have played with.
The +1/+1 token people led by Ajani Steadfast is very aggressive and can finish your opponent in 4 turns. I actually played against one of its variants in a Standard 2-man queue and unluckily lost. This deck is very Budget friendly except for Ajani itself that is almost 3 tix at the time of writing.
I know that everyone have met Gary Gray Merchant of Asphodel before but he is still very cool and a lot of casual people think so too. This mono black deck can be aggressive from the beginning till the end with its early beaters (Bloodsoaked Champion, Tormented Hero, Master of the Feast and the new addition to the 3 mana big black guy Pitiless Horde. Do not worry If you come up short because the Power of Gary will save you.
Other Spells
4 Mastery of the Unseen
1 Temur War Shaman
2 Soul Summons
2 Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
1 Temur Sabertooth
2 Devouring Light
4 Mardu Woe-Reaper 16 cards
Green white manifest deck has proven itself already in Standard but it is more of a green devotion deck splashing white. In this Is This Casual version, I would try to see if a GW deck that does not have its power trio of Courser of Kruphix, Polukranos, World Eater and Whisperwood Elemental can still pull it off and win in a constructed format or will it be a simple casual deck.
The Card Selection:
Since I know that a lot of you have seen this type of deck in action I will just discuss my choices for the replacement of the power trio card that I have mention above.
1. Mardu Woe-Reaper - This card is used to compensate for the life gain that Courser of Kruphix provides plus it is an early aggressive card.
2. (Basara Tower archer)- This card add to the devotion of green for our legendary land Nykthos.
4. (Temur Sabretooth)- The other power of Whisperwood is to make sure that you will still have creatures after a Wrath of God effect and this guy can save some if not all of your creatures when it happens.
5. Arbor Colossus- It has a higher CMC than Polukranos and you can only destroy creatures with flying that is why this guy is usually a sideboard card but still this guy is very useful and worthy of being the World Eaters' replacement.
Conclusion:
In the just for fun room I have win more games than I have lost and most of the time I have lost against Dimir or Azorius control decks. In the constructed queues I have won a 2-man queue but lost in the standard 8-player queue. I lost in the first round and was eliminated but I believe it is due to my inexperienced in playing in a more competitive environment. I got impatient in my last play because of problem in time (My client was lagging so much). I actually make one or two misclicks in the game and I hate myself for it. (Do not keep on clicking F6 because you are frustrated with the client). All in all I believe that this deck even without the three key cards is still a competitive deck and cannot be called a casual deck.
A Tribute to my to "Puppy"
I was really saddened by the passing of my dog so I made this deck for her. I have not been able to try it out in Tribal Apocalypse and I hope next time I would be able to. My last write up about it seems too emotional but those who want to see the emotional me just click on Casual Plays # 8.
I know that a lot of my readers are wondering if this dream tournament of mine will still come into fruition. I am still looking for sponsor right now but the good news is that longtimegone the PCT host agreed to host the event and we are working on a tournament that will fund the PRE. I hope everyone of you can join in this fund raising tournament. Details of the tournament will be in the next article with lots of Dragons.
Here are some videos for you to enjoy:
GW Manifest : This shows how my sloppy plays makes me lose in an 8-man queue.
Mono White +1 People: Do you want to see the turn 4 win? I am sorry to say that it is an opponent that did that to me using his own version of the deck and I don't want to show 2 defeats in a row.
Mono Black Devotion: This is a game against a very casual Mardu deck. Game one is good but the replay seems to be cut. Game 2 shows the difference when using a mono colored and a multi-color deck.
That is it for now. Thank you for reading and I hope you read my next article. Till next time. Peace Out MTGO Peeps!
MPDC should be 2am in your time, if I got it right. Join #mpdc on MTGO a bit earlier so you can be sure. Also, add rremedio1 and gwyned to your buddy list if you need further help.
I actually have gwyned as a buddy. I was actually able to join mpdc then fall asleep before it started. It is really hard to play at that time. I hope i can play next week if my eyes would let me be awake at that time. I might try to sleep early and just wake up in the middle of the night so i could join. Tnx again.
