CJB: Mono Black Friday!

Greetings and Salutations new-and-or-loyal readers!

I'm going to preface today's article by saying I'm American. I can't assume all of my readers are from the rootin'-tootin' country that is the United States of America. At least one person is from England.

In any event, as you read this (if you read it on its published date), it is the day after Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving, without getting political, is, at least, at its very core-- about feasting, friends, family, and appreciating your life for what ya got. The next day is a day for consumerism. It's Black Friday, where everyone waits in line hungover in hopes of scoring a cheaper-than-norm tv/toy/etc. et al.

Many of us eschew the horrid teeming masses coagulating like a blob of consumerism and stay inside, blinds drawn. We order pizza, rewatch Guardians of the Galaxy, and play Magic. For those of us smart enough to go this route, I figured why not make Black Friday into our own MTGO tradition?

Commander:
Liliana, Heretical Healer

So I'm going to go ahead and point out that this deck is in its early, larva stages. Usually when I focus on a deck for Commander Johnny-Boosh it is a well-oiled, fine-tuned machine of a deck that has a good percentage of wins and a lot of Johnny Shenanigans. This deck has the wins and the shenanigans, but it's a fairly new build and has room for kinks to be ironed out. Nevertheless, this deck has performed so valiantly and been so much fun to pilot I have presented it before you today.

IMPORTANT PROTIP: Once you are about to have Lily flip, make sure you click on her and changed "Command Zone instead of Exile" to Exile when exiled. Then, once she flips, change it back in case someone has an Utter End or something. This way she flips properly.

One of my favorite ways to flip her is with Viscera Seer. I like to pop it out, pop out Lily, sac it to itself, and the recur it with flipped Lily. It usually works out beautifully.

As you can imagine, this deck is a sacrifice/recursion deck in all black. I tried to focus on cheap-casting-cost creatures and spells to really overwhelm the board before my opponent has a chance to know what is going on. Most of the spells are aimed at five-CMC or less, with the occasional exception to rule, such as Ugin, Karn, Scour from Existence, Grave Titan, Duplicant and a few others.

For added creatures for sacrificing, we have Sengir Autocrat, Marsh Flitter, Dread Drone, Carrier Thrall, Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder, Rakshasa Gravecaller, and Grave Titan. Lily also drops a zombie whence flipped.

Sacrifice outlets include Corpse Augur, Sidisi, Undead Vizier, Disciple of Bolas, Rakshasa Gravecaller, Bloodflow ConnoisseurChampion of Stray Souls, Disciple of GriselbrandPhyrexian PlaguelordViscera SeerAttritionVampiric Rites, Gate to Phyrexia (I always love being able to put this card in a deck. Black artifact removal  FTW), Flesh CarverHell's CaretakerHigh Market & Miren, the Moaning Well. Not to mention that the awesome "make everyone sacrifice a creature" twins of Fleshbag Marauder and Merciless Executioner. Then there's Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath's ultimate, which is awesome but usually not game-breaking enough to force an auto-concede out of your opponent. Marsh Flitter can come in, and sacrifice one of its goblin tokens right away to trigger Lily. Now, let's talk Corpse Harvester. This guy can snag you another Zombie, such as Corpse Augur,  the Marauder, Sidisi, or Apprentice Necromancer.

The Necromancer is a nice bit o' tech that can do some fun stuff like grab back a Phyrexian Plaguelord which has haste and can immediately sacrifice itself to give a creature -4/-4. Further, you could snag back a Grave Titan for extra tokens, or a Solemn Simulacrum for the land and the card. It has a wide range of possibilities, and I chose it over Doomed Necromancer in the deck. The Zombie synergy just works well with Corpse Harvester, which, by the way, can self-sacrifice.

Speaking of self-sacrificing inclusions-- lest we forget: Echo-y Bone Shredder & Evoke-y Shriekmaw. The Eldrazi Spawn and sole Eldrazi Scion can also be self-sacrificed for one colorless mana. Hell's Caretaker can do itself in for a one-time creature recursion. The Marauder/Executioner BFFLs can hose themselves and Burnished Hart is amazing in this deck. I often drop it ASAP, cast Lily, sacrifice it, score all the flipped Lily stuff, and two Swamps.

Dictate of Erebos, Butcher of Malakir and Grave Pact are veritable titans in this deck, completely upping the ante on shenanigans. I had out a Dictate in one game and cast (Merciless Execution). I sacrificed it with High Market and recurred it with my flipped Liliana to force an opponent three sacrifices in the one turn.

Faceless Butcher is an awesome, exilin' machine if you cast it, target, sacrifice it to something like Vampiric Rites to stack the "leaves play" trigger on top of the exilin'-enters one. It's a tried and true combo since it and Nantuko Husk were first paired together.

I've also included some extra recursion. I've talked about Hell's Caretaker and Apprentice Necromancer, and I've also got Living Death, Animate Dead, Reanimate, Volrath's Stronghold,  and  Mortuary Mire alongside flipped Liliana.

Black Market can be sick in this deck, facilitating recasting Liliana over and over and fueling your crazy shenanigans. Best 9 bucks I've spent in a while.

The rest of the stuff falls under utility.  You've got exiling with Gild/(Dupliant)/Sever the Bloodline/Silence the Believers/Ugin/Karn/Scour from Existence. You've got more removal with the newest Ob Nixilis, Unstable Obelisk, Blighted Fen, Damnation and Shadowborn Demon. You've got extreme mana fixing with Cabal Coffers, Gauntlet of Power, Crypt GhastSol Ring, Mana Crypt, Sword of the Animist, Solemn Simulacrum, Pilgrim's Eye and Caged Sun. Tutors! We got tutors! Sidisi, Vampiric, Demonic and Imperial Seal. We've got card draw! Necropotence, Phyrexian Arena, the Augur, the Bolas dude, Vampiric Rites, Reignited Obby Nix and the Coercive Portal.

All in all, this is a tight deck. I look forward to hearing your thoughts, readers, on what I can improve. It can win fast and dirty, or go the long haul.

Commander:
Korlash, Heir to Blackblade

So, of course, I couldn't have a Mono Black, Black Friday special without making the second deck Zombies. What a quintessential tribal group to encapsulate the spirit of Black Friday. A bunch of consumer-zombies mindlessly buying things and trodding upon themselves and each other translated to a bunch of actual Zombies devouring each other and themselves to murder your opponent.

There isn't much to this deck beyond all of my favorite zombies (that are all black) haphazardly chucked into a tribal Commander deck like some drunken Timmy having waaay too good of a time with him/herself. Literally. The Wretched is in here. A regenerating, nonflying Nightmare is the Commander.

However, the deck does have a lot of synergy and, honestly, a bit of similarity to the previous deck. Lily loves zombies, after all, and recursion. So does this deck.

This deck, though, has a bunch of Zombies from (Adapted Automaton) to Undead Warchief to Risen Executioner (and the rest)that pump other zombies, making your army (of the damned) pretty powerful.

What I like about the Zombie tribe, especially in singleton, really is the chance to use stuff that rarely sees play in established 60-card Zombie tribal decks. Things like Cruel Revival, Clutch of Undeath, Feeding Frenzy, and (Graveborn Sovereign).

For recursion, I get to use Zombie specific stuff like Lord of the Undead, Ghoulcaller's Chant, Unholy Grotto and the aforementioned Cruel Revival; but I also get to throw stuff like Volrath's Stronghold, Palace Siege and Living Death in the deck.

Maalfeld Twins is a great to sacrifice and recur-- so is Grave Titan. The rest of the stuff follows suit with the last deck, and Batman's famous Utility Belt. Recursion, removal, card drawing, tutors, mana ramping, etc et al.

I always love making a Tribal deck that actually has some shenanigans going on, like the sacrifice/recursion theme this one has.

Some parting thoughts:

Until these two decks, I sincerely undervalued Blighted Fen. I highly recommend it for mono black decks, and all the other decks with black in them. Sometimes it's a dead draw, but it still functions as a land. Sometimes drawing a Swamp or Terrain Generator is just as bad. The times it's actually useful, maaaaaaaaan is it useful.

If you like mono black decks, don't forget my quick black vamps deck.

Thanks for joining me again. Did I miss anything you would've included?
