CJB: Oona/Mimeoplasm

If you haven't ever listened to The Traveling Wilburys, you are missing out. They have a song called Tweeter and the Monkey Man, and when I read the title of this article, it's all I can hear in my head.

Hey everyone! Boosh here, back with more Johnny fun shenanigans in Commander.

This article showcases two decks which both have the common thread of exiling stuff. With The Mimeoplasm you want to exile either your stuff or your opponent's stuff from graveyards to make a cool creature. I went the route of focusing on my own creatures to copy, rather than relying on mill to grab opponents' creatures. Then, with Oona, Queen of the Fae, we take the theme of milling to the extreme by focusing on Oonamilling/Ingesting and adding in all kinds of BFZ Eldrazi/Eldrazi Processors. Plus, both decks share a lot of new BFZ cards, and, even though I've written a couple articles about BFZ-infused Commander decks, these are both pretty fun to play.

I've had a lot of success with both of these decks. They have both gone through a lot of tinkering, but one of the central themes I kept coming back to in both was the need for more mana resources. Sometimes, with a deck filled with cheap creatures, you can shave off a few lands in order to have more cheap casting cards, but more and more I seem to add more lands and more ways to score mana in all of my decks. The only time either of these decks would lose quickly was because of manascrew in playing games against opponents in the JFF room.

Let's start off with Oona.

Oona's stratagem is primarily Exile-mill, also known as Oonamilling or Ingesting. It does this to make various uses of new BFZ Eldrazi like Oblivion Sower or Cryptic Cruiser, and/or to actually win by decking with Ingesting, when you throw the new Ulamog into play alongside Oona's ability. That has only actually happened to me once, so it's really for the processing bit. It has a nice package of removal to boot. I really like it so far, and can't wait to see what Ingest/Process cards come out in Oath of the Gatewatch. Let's check out the deck.

Oona, Queen of the Fae: Our Commander, and a flying, exilin', faerie making Queen. She's the perfect Commander for a deck that uses the new processing ability of BFZdrazi.
Withered WretchCarrion BeetlesAgent of Erebos: Graveyard exilin'. Something we want to encourage to get the Eldrazi rolling, and something needed when we return particularly pesky threats from exile to the graveyard.
Consecrated Sphinx: Blue Commander Staple. His new bffl is Sire of Stagnation
DuplicantPhyrexian Ingester: Exile a pesky creature staples, which fit into the deck.
Circu, Dimir Lobotomist: Great inclusion in the deck based on theme.
Siren of the Silent Song: Though it doesn't exile-mill outright, it does help with discarding and regular mill, which can then be Withered Wretched or Hedonist's Troved.
Thassa, God of the Sea: Plenty of reason to be able to Scry each turn and make things like Oona or Ulamog or a big ol' Stitcher Geralf Zombie unblockable.
Ruination Guide, Mist Intruder, Fathom Feeder, Dominator Drone, Culling Drone, Benthic Infiltrator = Ingesty Eldrazi.
Blight Herder, Cryptic Cruiser, Mind Raker, Murk Strider, Ulamog's Despoiler, Ulamog's Nullifier, Ulamog's Reclaimer, Wasteland Strangler = Eldrazi Processors who do cool crap with exiled cards being placed back in the 'yard as a cost.
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger: If Oona is Queen of Exile-mill, Ula here is the Mack Daddy of it.
Oblivion Sower: Such an excellent card in this deck, truly. So useful after using Oona to mill a bunch.
Stitcher Geralf: Though I am still very proud of his Commander deckbuild, he is a great support character in this deck.
Conduit of Ruin: Two less for Eldrazi and everything else? Heck yes. Also get to tutor up the new Ulamog? Sold American.

Other Spells:

Bitterblossom: Ever since this dropped low enough financially to reenter my Magic life, it finds its way into every black Commander deck it can.
Appetite for Brains, Hedonist's Trove ExtractAshiok, Nightmare WeaverNight Terrors : More exiling to fuel our Processors.
Lotus BloomDimir SignetSol Ring
NecropotencePhyrexian ArenaDeep Analysis: Card draw!
Oubliette, Grip of Desolation, Scour from Existence, Silence the BelieversKarn LiberatedUgin, the Spirit DragonAshes to AshesCurse of the SwineGild, Brittle Effigy: Exile/Removal!
Vampiric TutorDemonic TutorImperial Seal: Tutors!
Dimir Machinations: This card is awesome, because it can tutor up all manner of awesome cards in this deck like Phyrexian Arena, Ashiok, Ruinous Path-- or you can exile three cards to fuel a Processor.
Cyclonic Rift: Blue Commander staple!
Ruinous Path: I chose this over yet another Exile spell and the instant-speed Hero's Downfall because of the Awaken possibility; another body in the late game might be needed, especially after a Damnation and you are trading creatures/removal spells.
Jace, the Mind Sculptor: Big Daddy JDawg needs no exposition.
Ob Nixilis Reignited: Card draw, removal & continued pain; the perfect black planeswalker.
Damnation: It's dangerous to go alone, here take this (mass removal).
Ãether Gale: Just a fun bounce card from C14 that's fun to play:

I'm sure you can figure out all of the land choices without my blowharding descriptions.

So I don't have any screenshots for you this time around, but I can say I've gotten positive feedback from some impressed opponents. Many have complimented me on how I have made a deck to fully use the new Processing mechanic. It exile-mills but it isn't heinous enough to make people quit right off the bat. Sure, many times that I've cast Ulamog, exiled two permanents, and already had Oona on the board resulted in some angry concessions-- but overall, it gets a much better response than other mill-dependent decks.

I usually win more with general beatdowns and continued removal than with exile-milling. As I said, it only happened once and I've played this deck about 50 times since its creation. It's hard to get rid of 99 cards via exile when your board is filled with big Eldrazi, a bunch of 1/1 flying Faeries, and so on. Beatdowns happen. Plus, along the way, you get to exile a bunch of threats and o weird, fun, Processy stuff.

First off, how can you not love a Legendary Ooze that has no true name but 'The Mimeoplasm', which also has recently digested a dinosaur and made a Tyrannosaurus head appendage. Anytime Magic references a dinosaur my inner boyhood squeals.

This deck has a small dab of self-milling in order to get creatures in my 'yard for The Mimeoplasm to copy and grab counters from, in the form of Deadbridge Chant, Sidisi and Tasigur. It has the same three black tried and true tutors from my Oona deck, and also adds in Liliana Vess. Original Lily has a great bit where I can choose myself to discard something, maybe an Ulamog?-- in order for Mimey to copy. I tried to squeeze in Origins Lilly, but I couldn't get her to transform consistently so she wound up being cut. There's also Rune-scarred Demon, which I'll expound upon momentarily. The other tutors in this deck are the amazin Entomb and Buried Alive which pair so nicely with Mimey also.

The most consistent things I dump in my yard are Void Winnower (usually for counters), Ulamog and Skithiryx (still one of the best names in Magic). If you slap Ulamog or Void Winnower counters on Skithy, give it haste, and attack, usually it's game. I also like to get Rune-scarred Demon into my graveyard in order for The Mimeoplasm to copy it, should the need arise.

A nice little combo I have in here, which I like to use is Loaming Shaman and Deadbridge Chant, which allows you to cherry pick your upkeep-chant options. It's also sometimes fun to empty it out entirely so you evoke a Mulldrifter and then score it back next turn.

Life's Finale is an opponent-based Buried Alive alongside mass removal. It's absolutely glorious in this deck.

Two MVPs in this deck are Torrent Elemental and Misthollow Griffin. I was even facing a nice opponent once who used Ashiok on me and scored my Griffin, only for me to be able to cast it the next turn. Exiling either with your Commander gives you another creature to cast shortly after. There was a time I had a Commander-copied Griffin with 9 counters on it alongside the regular one.

You are going to get concessions when you pull off a turn four/five/six copied Skithiryx or Ulamog with tons of counters on it.

Survival of the Fittest is also key here, because it allows you to ditch something too big like Winnower and search for some manafixer like Sakura, Wood Elves or your Simulacrum. It also comes in handy alongside Victimize, Reanimate, Beacon of Unrest, etc.

I have Dakra Mystic, because that's a fun way to slap something in my graveyard or make an opponent slap one in his/her's or score a card, for us both. Wurmcoil is in here because it's an awesome card and a nice choice for our Commander in a pinch, to make it bigger and thus gain you back more life.

The rest of the deck is removal and answers to problems, and Animist's Awakening which is an awesome freakin' card.

Here is one screenshot I have for you. I won this turn, the poison counters are cropped out. Still, look at that hand! Look at that board state! I have a copied Skithiryx, and a Clever Impersonator'ed Chant. I have a Survival to ditch Ulamog.

Thanks for joining me again. Did I miss anything you would've included?

I want a Homer Simpson Planeswalker!!!

Reading a deck list with Jace, Wurmcoil, etc, makes me really interested to be honest. That's the kind of thing I could get behind :)
