Deck tech:

Something I forgot to mention here is that you have to really watch out for Black Sun's Zenith, especially if you don't have any sacrifice outlets.  In addition, BSZ with Doubling Season in play is really, really bad.  Even if you think that the Black player doesn't have enough mana, there are plenty of ways for them to come up with enough mana and/or counters to really hurt Skullbriar.

Game 1:

Game 2:

Game 3:

There you go, hope you guys enjoyed!  I'm going to try and do these every other week, but no guarantees.  I'm still working on block overviews, so the Onslaught Overview should be coming out in the near future (or end of the year at the latest :) Until next time!

Great article but move the mic a little further from your mouth next time? When you spoke it sounded like you were in a wind tunnel!

Yeah, my mic is a real problem. I seem to have lost my old one, and with this one I couldn't find the sweet spot. It was either too far away and you could barely hear me, or like this. Ah well, hopefully I can get another one soon.

Skullbriar is a fun by themonkey at Sat, 01/12/2013 - 13:15

Skullbriar is a fun commander. I made a deck around him and it was a blast to play, and it too won more than I thought it should when I made it.

Although, as usual, your tek is better than mine.

I especially like the vampire package, it's pretty great.

The main difference was I went with a lot of ETB creatures for ramp, tutoring, and destruction. That way I would get an effect and get a chump blocker. I also packed more graveyard hate for dealing with combo.

One card that I loved playing that you didn't include was Soul's Might. Like Tainted Strike this often made Skullbriar into a one hit killer, but with commander damage.

Looks like I'll have to head to MTGOTraders and buy some more cards to update my deck.

Oh yeah, I knew that you had by Leviathan at Sun, 01/13/2013 - 19:32

Oh yeah, I knew that you had made a Skullbriar list, but I hadn't actually seen it yet. Soul's Might is pretty sweet, I think I might have just missed it. Dunno if my tek is better, more like there have been additional cards printed since your article. Glad you liked it!

Love the deck build. I'm going to incorporate some of your (better) ideas into mine. I was trying to run Varolz in with mine, which was nice when it hit but sucked when it didn't. Nothing like having a Death's Shadow stuck in your hand the entire game.

Varolz is a nice support dude for Skullbriar. You just can't depend on him being out there. So you can't run stuff like Phyrexian Dreadnaught and Death's Shadow, you just gotta use the dudes in your graveyard for value. The creature count in this version might even be a little low for that, but you can bump it up with ETB dudes.
