THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

So, in light of the enthusiastic response from last week, I thereby declare the following creatures restricted to their tribes only in both Underdog and Regular events, effective immediately (this week's Pure, so we have a week notice): Knight of the Reliquary is playable in Human or Knight decks only; Tarmogoyf in Lhurgoyf decks only (so I assume this is goodbye); True-Name Nemesis in Merfolk or Rogue decks only.

Please note that Stoneforge Mystic is not restricted to tribe in Underdog events because the Swords and Batterskull are banned there. Check all the banned and restricted to tribe cards for each format here.

Also, a public service announcement: tomorrow, right after Tribal Apocalypse, will be held the third edition of The Art of War. It's a free Vintage event where you have to play cards all belonging to the same artist (except for basic lands). You can find more about it here.

It'll probably be the last event for Art of War, so come and have fun with this surprisingly flexible, crazy format one last time. Registration is open on Gatherling.

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 5.07, Week 216 BE
  • Date: February 21
  • Attendance: 26
  • Rounds: 4
  • Subformat: Regular
  • Winner: ScionOfJustice (Elf)
  • Other undefeated: DrunkenSailor15 (Merfolk), Robin88 (Monk)
  • 1 Loss: _ShipIt_ (Human), romellos (Wizard), _Kumagoro_ (Human), ML_Berlin (Goblin), m4vis (Construct)
  • Underdog Prize: AJ_Impy (Phoenix)
  • Tribes: Cleric, Construct (x2), Elf (x2), Fungus, Goblin (x3), Human (x4), Insect, Knight, Merfolk, Monk, Phoenix, Sphinx, Spirit (x2), Vampire, Wall, Wizard, Zombie (x2)
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

First Elf win of the year (in yet another very large event! We're on fire this year!), thanks to ScionOfJustice and this Ezuri-based list featuring a couple less usual tribesmen (also look for some replay of it unlocking achievements in today's Show and Tell).

We had two other undefeated players, DrunkenSailor15 with Merfolk (defeated in the final match by Scion), and Robin88 with Monk, both lists we've featured many times already. I'm more interested in this super-budget, mono-red Human deck sporting Monastery Swiftspear as the only (relatively) money card, as piloted to 3-1 by _ShipIt_:

And look at this interesting Infect Insect deck by ChNidox. It ended 2-2, but it might be actually viable:

Last but not least, to complete what apparently was a mono-green/mono-red week, the sublime Phoenix deck by AJ_Impy, which deserved a full set of replays down there on Show and Tell, because it might not be consistent enough to defeat all the Goblins it faced, but was still capable of doing incredible feats. Appropriately, only Phoenices come back from the flames of Blasphemous Act or Jokulhaups.

THE HIGH PRICE OF WINNING

SHOW AND TELL

AJ_Impy's Phoenices battle Deonmag's Zombies in a battle burning with the fire of a thousand suns.

And this is ScionOfJustice unlocking achievements #31 and #50 by putting 5 different tribe members and 10 lands on the battlefield at once, thanks to his (curiously named) Elf deck powering a big Genesis Wave. You can also hear Scion himself boasting about it on audio.

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

Cockatrice Wants You! And Badger, too! Be the first to win a match with these new eligible tribes and you'll win a 1-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Remember: only tribes with at least 3 members are effectively considered tribes in Tribal Apocalypse (since tribes that field an equal or greater number of Changelings than actual members count as Shapeshifter decks). Tribes with exactly 3 members are allowed to play in Underdog events with 8 slots filled by Changelings, whereas nobody else (but, of course, Shapeshifter decks) can play with more than 4 Changelings in those events. And of course this will happen only as soon as the Changelings will work on V4 as promised.

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit on Pennybot. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the first quarter of 2015. The quarter will end March 28. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Achievements (sponsored by AJ_Impy and vantar6697): Unlock the greatest number of Achievements from this list and AJ and vantar will grant you 10 tix per quarter! The current quarter will end March 28. Players with the same number of achievements will split the prize. 10 more tix will be given at the end of the year to that whole season's Achievement Master. Good luck!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

True mastery of boasting comes when you do not need to say a word to have your achievements glorified. ;)

Ive got the not saying anything down, usually but the glorifying doesn't happen. I think I missed a step.
