THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

Not much to say except: Magic Origins is coming, and is awesome, so go crazy with those drafts, there's a lot of useful stuff for Tribal Wars in that set. Expect my Tribal Evaluation to go live sooner rather than later, and in the meantime, you can read romellos' financial review. Time to go back to the roots!

Nissa wants you! Or more likely, you'll want her, in a couple weeks.

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 5.26, Week 235 BE
  • Date: July 4
  • Attendance: 17
  • Rounds: 4
  • Subformat: Underdog
  • Winner: Yokai_ (Berserker)
  • 1 Loss: Bazaar of Baghdad (Troll), AmericanGaren (Satyr), Gq1rf7 (Myr), mihahitlor (Soltari)
  • True Underdog Prize: vantar6697 (Worm)
  • Tribes: Bat, Berserker (x2), Giant, Horror (x2), Hydra, Lhurgoyf, Minotaur, Myr (x2), Satyr, Soltari, Troll, Weird, Worm, Wurm
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

Berserker is certainly a popular tribe in Underdog right now, but if we look closely, it doesn't show up or win in a particularly dominant way. For instance, there were only two Berserker decks last week, and yes, one of them ended up grabbing the 1st place, but it never happened before this year, and only three times overall, so we're good. Out of the 7 Underdog events we played so far in 2015, we had this sequence of winning tribes: Monk (later moved to Major League), Soltari, Scarecrow, Avatar, Kor, Scarecrow again (different player/build), and now Berserker, with the latter also getting the only non-event-winning undefeated result of the year. This said, it is a solid tribe, sort of a replacement for Goblin, with cards like Frenzied Goblin and Jund Hackblade as major components, while also getting to throw Bloodbraid Elf into the mix. We can see all of the above in Yokai_'s triumphant build below:

Curiously, the reverse of last week's 4th round match for the win happened, with Yokai_ taking his revenge on Bazaar of Baghdad this time. And the opposite of what has been said of the Berserkers can be said of the Trolls: we don't see them very often and they rarely do well, despite the potential. Bazaar of Baghdad helped correct the situation with a build that features all the usual suspects tribesmembers but a very original support section entirely based on enchantments, but only two of them (Angelic Destiny and the multipurpose Bow of Nylea) as a way to pump the untouchable Trolls. Sterling Grove is a card you typically see in Enchantress's decks, but here it's the enabler of an enchantment toolbox featuring one-ofs like Banishing Light and Mirri's Guile (while giving BoB's enchantment package the same protective power as the Trolls themselves). Plus Worship, banking on the fact that the average creature in the deck is very, very resilient.

Next we feature a recent tribe, piloted by a recent addition to Tribal Apocalypse: Satyr by AmericanGaren. The build is quite peculiar, in that it's a monored deck where the plan is to pump up the little guys with spells like Titan's Strength and Dragon Mantle, then to give them double strike via Assault Strobe or Temur Battle Rage. Not sure why there's Lightning Strike instead of Lightning Bolt. Maybe it was a build conceived for Pure Tribal weeks? It's also an extremely budget-friendly deck, considering the whole thing is worth less than one buck, which is more common these days than it was in the past, but still pretty remarkable.

Finally, here's vantar6697, typically using something nobody else ever uses: in this case, Worm, for the second time ever (possible inspired by their "lord" Creakwood Liege now having a reasonable price thanks to Modern Masters 2015.) A deserving True Underdog prize like few else.

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

Cockatrice Wants You! And Badger, too! Be the first to win a match with these new eligible tribes and you'll win a 1-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Remember: only tribes with at least 3 members are effectively considered tribes in Tribal Apocalypse (since tribes that field an equal or greater number of Changelings than actual members count as Shapeshifter decks). Tribes with exactly 3 members are allowed to play in Underdog events with 8 slots filled by Changelings, whereas nobody else (but, of course, Shapeshifter decks) can play with more than 4 Changelings in those events. And of course this will happen only as soon as the Changelings will work on V4 as promised.

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit on Pennybot. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the third quarter of 2015. The quarter will end September 26. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Congratulations to last quarter's winner, Generalissimo!

The Achievements (sponsored by AJ_Impy and vantar6697): Unlock the greatest number of Achievements from this list and AJ and vantar will grant you 10 tix per quarter! The current quarter will end September 26. Players with the same number of achievements will split the prize. 10 more tix will be given at the end of the year to that whole season's Achievement Master. Good luck and congratulations to last quarter's Achievement Master, ScionOfJustice!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.
