THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

After the fireworks of the previous week's Invitational event (congrats again to mihahitlor for becoming our first Double Champion), we segued into a small event. In fact, one of the ten smallest ever, with barely a double digit amount of players. Last time we did so badly was during our annus horribilis, 2014. I chalk this one up to Invitational fatigue. Let's bounce back immediately from that, shall we?

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 6.05, Week 266 BE
  • Date: February 6
  • Attendance: 10
  • Rounds: 3
  • Subformat: Underdog
  • Winner: mihahitlor (Naga)
  • Other undefeated: romellos (Insect)
  • 1 Loss: Bazaar of Baghdad (Troll), ScionOfJustice (Artificer), Generalissimo (Kor)
  • True Underdog Prize: mihahitlor (Naga)
  • Up-and-Coming Prize: mihahitlor (Naga)
  • Tribes: Artificer, Berserker, Centaur, God, Insect, Kobold, Kor, Naga, Soltari, Troll
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

Look at this, we attained singularity in the end! (That means that each registered player was piloting a different tribe). If I'm not mistaken, it's the very first time. Of course, it's mainly because it was just a 10-player event, which makes it definitely easier. Still, singularity!

And look at Naga winning their first event! Thanks to our fresh Ultimate Champion mihahitlor! Who didn't get the Up-and-Coming Prize for it! (My bad, I forgot, I'll have it shipped with this week's prizes). The Unhallowed list is getting smaller and smaller. Which reminds me to remind everyone that Giant is an Underdog tribe now. Make sure to take notice.

A classic fight for the top resulted in the second place awarded to romellos with Insect. I like that I managed to make Insect into a tier-1 Underdog tribe. So proud of it. Although, this one is an infect build, very different from my Hornet Nest approach.

And to remain in Golgari colors (which had a very good week, scoring the first three places with three different tertiary splashes: blue, red and white), a mention has to go to Bazaar of Baghdad's Trolls.

THE HIGH PRICE OF WINNING

Here's the prices of all the featured decks, courtesy of the amazing Deck Pricer from mtgGoldfish (MTGO Traders prices as of February 12, 2016):

  • Bazaar of Baghdad's Trolls: $468.69

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

Cockatrice Wants You! Be the first to win a match with the last orphan tribe and you'll win a 2-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Remember: only tribes with at least 3 members are effectively considered tribes in Tribal Apocalypse (since tribes that field an equal or greater number of Changelings than actual members count as Shapeshifter decks). Tribes with exactly 3 members are allowed to play in Underdog events with 8 slots filled by Changelings, whereas nobody else (but, of course, Shapeshifter decks) can play with more than 4 Changelings in those events.

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit on Pennybot. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the first quarter of 2016. The quarter will end March 26. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Congratulations to last quarter's winner, AJ_Impy!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

Wanna test your deck? Tell us when you're online, and look who else is there and when! All of this here!

This may or may not have affected attendance but registration wasn't open until Thur. Usually it is open by Monday.

That's very weird, since this by Tribal Apocalypse at Fri, 02/12/2016 - 19:26

That's very weird, since this event was created before the Invitational was even held (I had to, since the Invitational was a different type of event). And I didn't change the settings after that.
New events are usually created with the pre-registration option already by Saturday, right after the end of that day's event. I never checked if they're immediately available, though, but I can't tell why it shouldn't be so.
