THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

It's been brought to my attention an issue regarding the sideboard break between games. Since the disappearance of the Tribal Wars filter within MTGO (all the rage), we have no way of be sure our Tribal Apocalypse opponent is actually playing a tribal deck. We must trust that they do, but the sideboarding is the moment when the doubts start rearing their ugly heads, especially when we're losing. So I must ask everyone to try and click that intermission away as soon as possible, to reassure our opponent we're not trying to illegally sideboard stuff in. I know some player like to use those spare minutes as a smoke or snack break, but I invite you not to do that anyway, for the sake of your opponent's peace of mind. Thank you.

In other news, next week I'll be at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival (woot!), so I won't be able to host Tribal Apocalypse. Do not worry, though, the brave ML_Berlin will take my place for one week. (The bravery comes from hosting two events back to back, Tribal and S100!)

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 6.23, Week 284 BE
  • Date: June 11
  • Attendance: 20
  • Rounds: 4
  • Subformat: Regular
  • Winner: Robin88 (Eldrazi)
  • Other undefeated: Generalissimo (Cat)
  • 1 Loss: ML_Berlin (Human), AEFabricio (Warrior), mihahitlor (Plant)
  • Underdog Prize: Angelic_Dawn (Lizard), bostroll (Fish)
  • Tribes: Ally, Bird, Cat, Demon, Eldrazi (x2), Elf, Fish, Human (x3), Lizard, Merfolk, Plant, Sliver, Soldier (x2), Spirit, Warrior, Zombie
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

Fourth win of the year for our resident Hong Kong champ Robin88, who's now the third most successful player of all times in Tribal Apocalypse (after mihahitlor and romellos)! And all while living in a time zone where, by the time all is said and done, it's likely late night. This time, to keep him company in his tribal afterhours, he had Eldrazi. And Ugin. Wait, shouldn't Ugin NOT to be helping Eldrazi?

The other undefeated, if failing to ultimately beat Robin's horde, was Generalissimo with Cat. It's been a while since Cat won a tournament here. In fact, the last time it happened was in May 2013, while piloted by feline specialist DirtyDuck. Cat used to be a big deal back then. Times have changed, but they're still a pretty lethal aggro tribe. And also wallet-friendly.

I don't think I get the pun in the deck's name. I like the simultaneously thematic and pragmatic inclusion of Ajani, though.

So, let's do a Selesnya triplet here, by following up Robin and Generalissimo's GW builds with the like-colored yet less fortunate Macks17's Human deck. Is the name of the archetype that's all about +1/+1 counters shenanigans "HGH" as a reference to the "Human Growth Hormone", or to the Internet-forums acronym "Haters Gonna Hate"? Because I think both may apply just fine.

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the second quarter of 2016. The quarter will end June 25. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Congratulations to last quarter's winner, Generalissimo!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

The name is just a reference to the internet's penchant for pictures of cats and the fact that it's a Soul Sisters deck; no clever puns involved.
