THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

28 players in the same event, guys! We had done it once before in March 10, 2012 (Event 62) and we did our record 32 players almost exactly a year later, in March 9, 2013 (Event 114). And now we're back to the big numbers. It's encouraging, to say the least.

By the way, I forgot to point out last week that morpphling's Vampire deck was the second cheapest event winner ever at $2.25. Congrats even more.

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 6.25, Week 286 BE
  • Date: June 25
  • Attendance: 28
  • Rounds: 4
  • Subformat: Regular
  • Winner: Kasparadi (Human)
  • Other undefeated: mihahitlor (Elf)
  • 1 Loss: pfirpfel (Eldrazi), BrunoDogma (Human), Gonzzy (Goblin), Golden_Lin (Eldrazi), totalhate (Wizard), Robin88 (Kor), Socanelas (Sliver)
  • Underdog Prize: Angelic_Dawn (Lizard)
  • Tribes: Ally (x2), Archon, Berserker, Demon, Eldrazi (x2), Elf (x2), Goblin (x2), Human (x6), Kor, Lizard, Minotaur, Sliver, Spirit, Vampire (x2), Viashino, Warrior, Wizard, Zombie
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

So, two first-time winners in a row! After budget-slasher morpphling the week before, in last week's very large event Kasparadi was the one who ended on top. With this Human list. Which is not as budget-friendly.

Kasparadi defeated in the playoff round this Elf deck by mihahitlor. Did you notice that miha is already way ahead in this season's leaderboard? You're going to read soon the last chat I recently had with him. We're exactly halfway through his reign as Ultimate Champion, after all.

It's a Birthing Pod deck, so I'm naturally wired to love it. And the Pod sure helps Elves exploit the important new endgame piece that is Shaman of the Pack, but how many times have you seen Savra, Queen of the Golgari in an actual list?

Finally, I have to feature Englishman AJ_Impy's Human list only for the important statement its name sets to make. Yeah, it's been a very difficult time in Europe this past couple of weeks.

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the third quarter of 2016. The quarter will end September 24. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Congratulations to last quarter's winner, Generalissimo!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

Regarding Thought Lash: despite no official WotC notification of bug or fix, this appears to work correctly now, at least in my Solitaire games where I damaged myself with Ancient Tomb. Can someone help me confirm this tomorrow?
