THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

Hey, did you know that Gremlin and Monkey are playable tribes now? Yeah, Kaladesh (of which I've finally completed the Tribal Evaluation; expect to see it soon) introduced 6 new Gremlins, which are almost all the Gremlins we have available because Phyrexian Gremlins from Antiquities never made it online (we have Flensermite, though).

They're... not too exciting. Also, aardvarks, for some reason.

And with the printing of Wily Bandar (which is a Cat Monkey, of all things), they're reintroduced the Monkey type, simultaneously giving it back to a few former Apes, that weren't in fact Apes at all:

"You'll never make a monkey out of me!"

We have all of these online, so that's playable, too. Welcome to the Underdog list, Gremlin and Monkey!

Now, AJ_Impy has already taken the new Kaladesh-specific tribes Aetherborn and Pilot for their maiden voyage (by winning one match with them thus grabbing the New Kids on the Block Award – both times). Now I invite you to try and do the same for Gremlin and Monkey, for a 3-tix special award... that AJ_Impy will be prevented from achieve! Sorry, AJ, I know you can do it, but I want someone else to do it for once. So, what do you guys think? Is it even possible to win a match (by actually playing: BYEs and no-shows do not count) with either one of these two strange, ridiculously absurd tribes?

Elves and Goblins don't show up as frequently as they used to in Regular, but occasionally they're still able to shine. In fact, let's feature once again the two most ancestral tribal forces. First with the event winner, Golden_Lin:

And then it's the turn of MisterMojoRising's gobbo build, now with 0% spells:

For two classic tribes returning to make an impact, there's a new one that never did, because it never existed before. I give you AJ_Impy and his brand new Aetherborns:

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Ishkanah Prize: The first player to win a match with a Spider deck by activating Ishkanah's lifedraining ability for a lethal strike of at least 4 damage, will get a 3-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. Spider lovers, or simply ticket lovers, start building!

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg has started the third quarter of 2016. The quarter will end September 24. By that date, the player or players who registered the greatest number of different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) will get a 5-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. Congratulations to last quarter's winner, Generalissimo!

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

Wanna test your deck? Tell us when you're online, and look who else is there and when! All of this here!

I'm trying to register but it says my maindeck cards are illegal by rarity

I'm fixing it. It's a problem by Kumagoro42 at Fri, 10/28/2016 - 22:20

I'm fixing it. It's a problem due to the fact that last year we used the Vintage Halloween format. The Legacy one (that we're using this year) has been corrupted somehow.

Fixed. I don't know if it was by Kumagoro42 at Fri, 10/28/2016 - 22:35

Fixed. I don't know if it was supposed to be called that way, though. :)

I'm entirely fine with this, although I'll admit Pilot and Aetherborn had a bit more synergy to work with than Monkey. Gremlin should be plenty good enough for at least a win, and my best wishes to those who wish to make mad bank in my stead. :)

The Halloween Special is by Kumagoro42 at Fri, 10/28/2016 - 23:25

The Halloween Special is Legacy this year, not Vintage.

Summary of the rules:
[EDIT: I had forgotten the cards previously not listed because the client would already take care of them automatically]

- Only Spooky creature types are allowed in the deck, even off-tribe, with some exceptions. Check the rules here.
- The card pool used is Legacy
- No card is banned except for the following ones: Arboria, Cleanse, Dread Return, Elephant Grass, Engineered Plague, Extinction, Grindstone, Light of Day, Karma, Kormus Bell, Sensei's Divining Top, Stasis, Umezawa's Jitte, and all Changeling creatures
- Griselbrand can only be played within the Demon tribe
- Make sure to respect the restrictions about Cat (black only), Faerie (black only), Rat (non-Kamigawa/non-humanoid only) and Snake (non-Kamigawa/non-humanoid only). They're not enforced in Gatherling

So, to be absolutely clear, The Abyss is legal?

Always has been in Halloween, by Kumagoro42 at Sat, 10/29/2016 - 08:38
Kumagoro42's picture

Always has been in Halloween, I believe. Or at least for the past two years, since it was Vintage then. (Of course we couldn't make it legal back when there was still an in-client Legacy Tribal Wars filter.)

Anyway, I wouldn't mind unbanning it in Regular too. Halloween seems a safe environment to test it out, since major artifact tribes aren't allowed.

Depends how you class by AJ_Impy at Sun, 10/30/2016 - 18:19

Depends how you class Scarecrow and Gargoyle. I could also do all-metal Horror, but after that you're looking at partials. (3 artifact zombies, 3 snakes, 2 spirits, 1 homunculus, 1 imp). Didn't go for it in the end, but happy to test it out some time.
