THOUGHTS OF A TRIBAL HOST
by Kumagoro

In the end, Ishkanah got her prize! Which is AJ_Impy's prize for having won a game by activating spider mama's lifedraining ability for a lethal strike of 4. It took a while but we've got there!

And now, time for a new challenge! To celebrate Amonkhet, let's have some fun its very master, Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker! And for fun, I mean crushing the opponent with his ultimate (which is certainly fun for him and his controller). A 3-tix certificate to the first player who'll win a game dealing 7 damage to the opponent via Nicol's activation. Be cruel!

Also, Amonkhet generated a variety of new tribes. One of those, Jackal, is entirely new (or better, it was a discontinued type that's now been brought back), and was played for the first time by AJ_Impy last week. But there's three other that were simply existing creature types previously non-eligible as tribes because they lacked the minimum number of tribesmembers, that is 3. But now Camel, Hippo and Hyena met the requisites, so they've been added to the New Kids on the Block Award list (not the Repopulation list, though. They'll get in there after we clear the list, but for now the eligible tribes are only those listed down here or in the table of the main tribal document here. Please note that Monkey, which still has to be played, is not eligible, despite being in the list when I announced the award last week. The award only includes tribes that, as of right now, have appeared exactly once). And the New Kids on the Block Award is open to all players who are not called AJ_Impy. Seriously, AJ, at least give the other guys one month before starting to clear the list!

LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...

  • Event Number: 7.17, Week 330 BE
  • Date: May 6
  • Attendance: 13
  • Rounds: 3
  • Subformat: Underdog
  • Winner: BrunoDogma (Rat)
  • Runner-up: Golden_Lin (Kobold)
  • 1 Loss: AJ_Impy (Spider), ML_Berlin (Berserker), Yokai_ (Berserker), Bazaar of Baghdad (Fox)
  • Underdog Prize: Bazaar of Baghdad (Fox)
  • Ishkanah Prize: AJ_Impy (Spider)
  • Tribes: Berserker (x2), Crab, Devil, Dwarf, Fox, Kobold, Rat, Scarecrow, Shapeshifter, Specter, Spider, Wolf
  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

Look at that, a Rat win, first time since Season 4, that is the only other time they ever got to 1st place, with this list by m4vis. BrunoDogma's deck is not banking as much on hand disruption (just like in the Specter's list from a few weeks ago, The Rack isn't even there; however, it might be a budget constraint, since it's about 14 tix apiece currently). It's more like a balance between taking away cards then giving beatings back in exchange: some Rats and spells will hit your hand, then Sign in Blood will provide new gas, and when in midgame all those disruption stuff will lose most of its effectiveness, Pack Rat becomes the perfect outlet for all that surplus, turning into a pretty scary finisher.

The other finalist was a budget build as well: combo Kobold by Golden_Lin. It's more or less the same list that gave Kobolds their first win back in February, but with more Urza's Baubles. They didn't help the little guys to repeat their previous exploit.

And this is the little Spider deck that could, courtesy of Ishkanah's tamer AJ_Impy. This is not a novelty deck, by the way. It legit ended in the money, first of the 2-1s. Go Spiders.

ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Bolas Prize: The first player to win a game by activating Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker's third ability for lethal damage will get a 3-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. Be cruel or go home!

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings. During Underdog events, only the True Underdog tribes are rewarded (those are the tribes belonging to all three categories of Underdog at once).

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The New Kids on the Block Award: When a new tribe is introduced in the game, or reaches enough members to be played as a proper tribe (i.e. at least 3 members, so you can build a deck that features 4 copies of each plus 8 Changeling creatures), the first player to score a match win with it will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. You'll need a hard win, not a BYE or a win by no-show of your opponent. The tribes currently eligible for the award are: Camel, Gremlin, Hippo, Hyena, Monkey.

The Repopulation Award: Some tribes get played only once (to get the New Kids on the Block Award) and then forgotten. Never again! Register one of the following tribes three times in different events, then play all rounds of those events with them, and you'll get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. The list of these tribes, established May 5, 2017, is as follows: Antelope, Atog, Crocodile, Goat, Homarid, Incarnation, Jackal, Leech, Licid, Manticore, Metathran, Monger, Moonfolk, Nightstalker, Octopus, Orgg, Ouphe, Ox, Processor, Rabbit, Salamander, Siren, Slith.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg rewards each player who registers 10 different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) during the year with a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. You can go on and win the prize multiple times in the year, but you need to keep playing different tribes! (So if you manage to register 50 different tribes in one season, you can get up to 15 tix!)

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

...All right, fine. You have one month, everyone.

The thought occurs you could stick prizes like this on the Top Players Lockout to count them down when one of us monopolises something.

That's not a bad idea at all. by Kumagoro42 at Sat, 05/13/2017 - 15:18
