First of all, we're on Discord now, thanks to Nagarjuna's efforts, so follow this link and join us!

Back to discussing Underdog, after a few talks on Discord and #TRIBAL on MTGO, I'm leaning toward readmitting Imp and Werewolf into the Underdog fold. Imp is pretty harmless once you aren't able to go Putrid Imp into discarding fattie to Exhume anymore. And Werewolf doesn't seem much stronger than, say, Centaur, and has gone entirely extinct from Tribal Apocalypse at large the moment it ceased to be playable in Underdog.

What do you think? Remember every change will be effective only at the beginning of October (so everything remains the same for tomorrow's event), as we'll do quarter changes to ban lists and formats, like the DCI more or less does.

  • Event Number: 8.33, Week 398 BE

  • Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is

So, Bandit Keith won back to back events with Goblins, and that's been only possible because he wasn't Top 8 two weeks ago yet, he made into the ranking after that event, so he's affected by the Top Players Lockout only after this event. Which means no more super-aggro Gobbos for a few weeks where he's concerned. Since we've already featured his list last week, let's focus on the runner-up, which is... oh, look, me! With a pretty fearsome (yet budget-friendly: no Walking Ballista, no Hangarback WalkerConstruct Cloudpost build with a strong Ugin theme. And yeah, Ugin, the Spirit Dragon is very likely the scariest planeswalker you could face in Tribal Wars. But he couldn't do much against Keith's Goblin assault.

Another player using Cloudpost for evil (which is the only way you can use Cloudpost) was AJ_Impy, piloting a Hydra build. We faced in round 3, with an absurdist game 1 in which we dropped a ton of Glimmerposts and not a single Cloudpost (and remember, Cloudpost counts ALL the Locus lands on the battlefield). Despite the lack of mana, our creatures started accumulating +1/+1 counters like candies, but in the end, a 64/64 Primordial Hydra is not something you can just block. Weirdly, Progenitus was not that much of a concern, instead. Both Primordial and Kalonian Hydra felt more dangerous. But this deck revisited the NO-Prog package since a long while, with Lifeblood Hydra as a sacrificial target of choice for Natural Order.

MontanaSteev brought an interesting monowhite Dwarf deck with no Vehicles but cool interactions like Aethergeode Miner with revolt creatures and especially Solemn Recruit (lots of female dwarves in this list, I realize. They look fierce).

And last but not least, Hippos won their first match ever thanks to their loving caretaker Nagarjuna! This leaves Camel as the only residual tribe eligible for the New Kids on the Block Award.

Here's the prices of all the featured decks, courtesy of the amazing Deck Pricer from mtgGoldfish (MTGO Traders prices as of August 31, 2018):

  • _Kumagoro_'s Constructs: $23.77
  • AJ_Impy's Hydras: $40.78
  • MontanaSteev's Dwarves: $55.05
  • Nagarjuna's Hippos: $185.26

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Underdog Prize: During any event of the regular rotation (but not necessarily during the one-time special events), all players who are running an Underdog Tribe are eligible for a 1-tix credit certificate from MTGO Traders. The tie-breakers are first the number of Underdog categories (for instance, a tribe that's simultaneously Endangered and Unhallowed will take the prize over one that's only Endangered), then the points achieved in the final standings.

The Up-and-Coming Prize: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders.

The New Kids on the Block Award: When a new tribe is introduced in the game, or reaches enough members to be played as a proper tribe (i.e. at least 3 members, so you can build a deck that features 4 copies of each plus 8 Changeling creatures), the first player to score a match win with it will get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. You'll need a hard win, not a BYE or a win by no-show of your opponent. The only tribe currently eligible for the award is Camel.

The Repopulation Award: Some tribes get played only once (to get the New Kids on the Block Award) and then forgotten. Never again! Register one of the following tribes three times in different events, then play all rounds of those events with them, and you'll get a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. The list of these tribes, established May 5, 2017, is as follows: Antelope, Goat, Incarnation, Licid, Monger, Nightstalker, Orgg, Ouphe, Rabbit, Salamander, Slith. Already cleared: Atog, Crocodile, Homarid, Jackal, Leech, Manticore, Metathran, Moonfolk, Octopus, Ox, Processor, Siren.

The Hamtastic Award: The Biodiversity Prize dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg rewards each player who registers 10 different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) during the year with a 3-tix certificate from MTGO Traders. You can go on and win the prize multiple times in the year, but you need to keep playing different tribes! (So if you manage to register 50 different tribes in one season, you can get up to 15 tix!)

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck again for 5 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck or decks 5 times before coming back to the undefeated one). With "deck" is meant a specific, recognizable archetype (e.g. Wall-Drazi), which in some case will be linked to a specific combo card (e.g. Helm of Obedience). A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.

We're on Discord! Join us from here, chat about tribal things with other tribal players and arrange tribal games on MTGO all week long! (Or you can just keep using our Google Sheets bulletin board).

Oh yeah, Treefolk too, sure! Forgot about them (I keep forgetting they're out of Underdog actually, I still can't tell how it happened).
