The first appointment with Penny Dreadful since it became a seasonal attraction brought us a string of... well, very conventional tribes. With that number of Elf, Goblin and Human decks, one might wonder if the format really supports enough variety for a tribal event. Luckily the winner, Yokai_, went another direction and triumphed due to the simple fact that the extremely synergistic Ally creatures don't see play anywhere else, so most of them don't cross the penny threshold. Building a four-color list on the cheap may cause some mana issues, but the tribe can count on its own Ally Encampment for fixing, as well as Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty's Secluded Courtyard.

You might have noticed the very powerful Champion of the Parish as an off-tribe complement in the Ally build. Human is that tribe's most frequent secondary subtype, after all, but what does a proper Human White Weenie list look like in Penny Dreadful? Here's what KMDBroken piloted into a one-loss score.

The disappearance of the Dark Horse Prize (should we still keep it going, symbolically?) has stranded small-tribe specialist lovetapsmtg without a clear weekly goal. It's almost jarring to see them run a Zombie deck, but those are the times we're living. And this is what the undead can muster in Penny fashion. Well, they can do many things, one of which is a Dredge build – with some help from an Elemental friend that has currently overshot legality and will leave the format at the upcoming rotation.

The next Penny adventure is on August 26!

Here's the prices of all the featured decks (MTGO Traders prices as of March 3, 2023):

  • Yokai_'s Allies: $1.20 tix
  • KMDBroken's Humans: $1.88
  • lovetapsmtg's Zombies: $5.85

Just to remind you of a few things:

The Up-and-Coming Virtual Plaque: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get bragging rights.

The New Kids on the Block Imaginary Commemorative Plate: When a new tribe is introduced in the game, or reaches enough members to be played as a proper tribe (i.e. at least 3 members, so you can build a deck that features 4 copies of each plus 8 Changeling creatures), the first player to score a match win with it will get everyone's respect. You'll need a hard win, not a BYE or a win by no-show of your opponent. Tribes currently eligible: Beholder.

The Hamtastic Trophy: The Biodiversity distinction dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg is awarded to each player who registers the most different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) during the year.

The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated in a specific format, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck in that format again for 3 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck three times before coming back to the undefeated one). In some cases, specific combo or archetype-defining cards will also be locked out. A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.
