LAST WEEK ON TRIBAL APOCALYPSE...
- Event Number: Week 637 BE
- Date: April 15
- Attendance: 5

- Subformat: Modern

- 1-loss: Deonmag with Vampire, Rakura with Human
- Tribes: Ally, Human, Merfolk, Snake, Vampire
- Event link (with all players, pairings, standings, decks, and results): here it is
We're back in business, if still under-attended. But we're working to have a new prize pool. Everything goes well, we'll be able to afford 3 tix for the winner, 1 tix for the Dark Horse, and 1 tix for the undefeated runner-up, if it exists (otherwise it'll be cumulatively put aside for one-time special prizes). It'll be dependent on attendance, though. At least 6 players, perhaps 8. Stay tuned.
Meanwhile, most recent Penny Dreadful-winning tribe Ally got a first place in a Modern event, too. This time -DiamondDust- was piloting them, and his list is quite different from Yokai_'s. In fact, Hada Freeblade
, Kazandu Blademaster
and Ondu Cleric
are the only nonland cards in common, with the Modern deck reducing the color spread from 5 to 3, and mostly playing as a Selesnya build with a minor black splash. As a consequence, it features tribal members you rarely see otherwise, like Beastcaller Savant
from the second wave of Allies in Battle for Zendikar. To his credit, this is not the first time -DiamondDust- brought this concoction to Tribal Apocalypse, and it went undefeated once before in 2021. He's also one of few players to consistently run the underused card advantage spell Winding Way
.
Next, let's celebrate the return of Rakura, once a Tribal Wars regular, who was missing around these part since 2014! Welcome back! Unlike the Allies from above, these Humans are full five-colored, although they had to use City of Brass
in lieu of Cavern of Souls
, I suppose for budgetary reasons. I find pleasantly quirky that the only noncreature nonland in this deck is Huatli, Radiant Champion
, of all cards.
And we also give a warm welcome to Hollow0n3, already known as a PureMTGO writer, and debuting in Tribal Apocalypse with these Merfolk. Hope to see you back often!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Just to remind you of a few things:
The Up-and-Coming Virtual Plaque: When a tribe wins an event for the first time ever (losing Unhallowed status), its pilot will get bragging rights.
The New Kids on the Block Imaginary Commemorative Plate: When a new tribe is introduced in the game, or reaches enough members to be played as a proper tribe (i.e. at least 3 members, so you can build a deck that features 4 copies of each plus 8 Changeling creatures), the first player to score a match win with it will get everyone's respect. You'll need a hard win, not a BYE or a win by no-show of your opponent. Tribes currently eligible: none.
The Hamtastic Trophy: The Biodiversity distinction dedicated to the memory of Erik Friborg is awarded to each player who registers the most different tribes (except Human, Elf and Goblin) during the year.
The Top Players Lockout: Every time a Top Player (either a Google Era Top 8, an Ultimate Champion/Tribal Player of the Year, or a seasonal Top 8) will end undefeated in a specific format, they will not be allowed to register the same tribe and deck in that format again for 3 events (i.e. they'll have to register a different deck three times before coming back to the undefeated one). In some cases, specific combo or archetype-defining cards will also be locked out. A list of the current lockouts is maintained here.
We're on Discord! Join us from here, chat about tribal things with other tribal players and arrange tribal games on MTGO all week long! (Or your can just keep using our Google Sheets bulletin board).
